Sole Solutions: Comfort & Care for the Feet

If your feet have been ‘roughing’ it through the winter, treat them to a soothing home spa. From foot exfoliators that renew rough soles to creams that soften cracked dry skin, put your feet first with moisture-charged products.

New York-based Podiatrists Dr. Neal Houslanger and Dr. Matthew Kassnove, share a few of their top foot care dos and don’ts tips:

“DO:
• Yearly professional checkups
• Check for cracks, sores and painful reddened areas
• Trim toenails straight across (don’t cut into the corners)
• Wash feet in warm not hot water
• Dry feet well, especially between the toes (blot dry, do not rub)
• Apply cream to your feet (avoiding between the toes)
• Wear comfortable well-fitting shoes and socks
• Shop for shoes later in the day since feet swell by then
• Orthotic wearers should have them checked professionally every 6 months
• Walk as it’s the best exercise for the feet. Most Americans log 75,000 miles on their feet by the time they reach the age of 50

DON’T
• Walk barefoot–even indoors or around pools and beaches–the feet need protection
• Trim corns and calluses with a razor
• Use over-the-counter medicated corn and callus removers which may cause skin burns
• Wear the same pair of orthotics for more than 5 years.”

There’s no time like the present to treat your feet!
