Chanel’s new oil-free moisturizer for sensitive skin, La Solution 10 de Chanel, has arrived at Nordstrom, and the reviews are rave. We spoke with Dr. Amy Wechsler, who collaborated with the iconic fashion house on their latest offering, about the product and why it’s so revolutionary for sensitive skin—and what we can do at home to make our own skin shine.

You are board certified in both dermatology and psychiatry. How has that shaped your philosophy and practice?
A lot of patients come for help with their appearance and end up talking about life issues. Skin care can be so emotional. So much of how we think affects how we look, and vice versa. I’ve always believed in a very strong mind-body, and, more specifically, mind-skin connection. There are so many interconnections between the brain and the skin in terms of circulation, neurotransmitters and hormones. Anything that affects our mind, in either a positive or negative way, will definitely affect our skin.

You speak to what you call the mind-beauty connection both in your practice and in your book (of the same title). What are a few small things a woman can do with that mind-body connection to enhance her natural beauty?

Sleep! So many of us are burning the candle at both ends, and sleep deprivation has become the new normal. It causes stress, which can damage the skin and worsen skin conditions. While you sleep, your body repairs the damage of the day, and interrupting sleep by staying up too late or waking up in the middle of the night, slows down cell renewal. When your sleep is synchronized with your body’s natural rhythms, you’ll look better and feel younger.

There are lots of things other than sleep that are anti-stress and anti-inflammatory: exercise, sex, consuming anti-oxidants like red wine and dark chocolate. Seeing a friend face-to-face is anti-stress; getting out and looking at trees and nature for a few minutes a day breaks that stress cycle; deep breathing techniques. It’s different for everyone. For some people it’s yoga, for others it’s music, reading, travel, relationships, going out with your kids.

You’ve said before that it’s important to have an every-day skincare ritual. What, in general, do you recommend?

In the morning, use a gentle, mild cleanser. Follow with moisturizer and sunscreen, I recommend La Solution 10 de Chanel and Chanel UV Essentiel SPF 50. These are great options for people with sensitive skin. Solution 10 is particularly great because you can also use it around the eyes.

In the evening, use an eye makeup remover and then wash your face with a gentle cleanser. I always use a really gentle, mild cleanser. A cleanser should remove the dirt of the day without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Your skin should never be squeaky clean. If it’s squeaky clean, then you’ve removed the good oils too, which isn’t healthy for skin. Follow with your moisturizer, I recommend moisturizing day and night.

Athena Calderone, Eye Swoon, photo by Sarah Elliott

Recently, lifestyle designer and creator of the digital inspiration destination EyeSwoon Athena Calderone immersed herself in the two newest scents from Donna Karan: Liquid Cashmere Black and Liquid Cashmere White. Playing off the rich notes of the one and the airier aroma of the other, Calderone developed two distinct sensory experiences. We spoke with her about these two beautifully developed vignettes (An Indulgent Sensory Experience and the Purity of Scent Memory) and how she creates ritual in her stylized life.

We know you’re a visual person, which definitely comes across in the photos you share on EyeSwoon. Each tells a story all its own, and they’re always so gorgeous. How do you plan the photo shoots?

For shoots, I love creating mood boards to gather all of my inspirations. Nothing brings me more joy than creating beauty. Many of my decor ideas or recipes are simple ones that are executed in thoughtful ways.

Speaking of the perfect photos, you so strikingly evoked the feel and fragrance notes from the Donna Karan Liquid Cashmere White and Black eau de parfums visually. When you first smelled them, what were one or two favorite things about each?

Liquid Cashmere White immediately struck a sensory cord within me. I love the freshness of citrus notes—Italian bergamot and lemon. We really do all have such duality within us, and the contrast in each of the fragrances really does speak to me. Liquid Cashmere Black truly evokes that darker, more sensual side. From our personalities to the scent to the visual scape, I swooned exploring both the pure and indulgent part of who I am.

A pretty package isn’t everything. While that’s true, we can’t help wanting to be a little more on point when it comes to our appearance this time of year. Holiday parties and get-togethers provide plenty of face time with our nearest and dearest—so naturally we want to look our best. And since gift giving is also on the agenda, we want to give the best too.

Several wise and miracle-working Nordstrom beauty stylists recommended these seasonal gifts. Somehow they knew just what we wanted—to give and to receive.

I love these M•A•C Irresistibly Charming mini pigments & glitter sets because it’s something I’d want to receive as a gift! This collection of pigments works wet or dry for every eye color and skin tone. The nudes and warm tones are great for day, while the purple glitter adds a head-turning pop for evening. Plus, the mini size is perfect for travel.

No need to worry about frizzy, dull hair this winter: All the products in this Drybar Sparkle & Shine set give you a salon-quality blowout, leaving hair conditioned, smooth and frizz-free—and the Buttercup blow dryer has changed my life. This set makes a great gift for the girl who has everything; trust me, she’ll thank you for it!

The holidays are suddenly around the corner—and so is the winter weather that can be murder on sensitive skin and lips. M·A·C Director of Makeup Artistry Gregory Arlt breaks down what he loves most about the brand’s new line of Mini Patentpolish Lip Kits.

“The holidays are all about dressing up with little bursts of color, and your makeup shouldn’t be any different. The new M∙A∙C Cosmetics Irresistibly Charming Mini Patentpolish Lip Pencil Kits are the perfect gift for a friend (and yourself!) this season. What I love about these products are not only their handbag-friendly size and color choices, but also their hydrating qualities in the unforgiving winter chill that can leave lips looking dry. There’s a beautiful see-through quality about the lip kits that creates a perfect stain on the lips.

The Mini Patentpolish Lip Kits can be used to create so many different looks! If you want to rock a smoky eye and a softer mouth, try using Lip Pencil in Spice all over your lips with Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Revved Up or Innocent in the center for an extra pop. Or, if you would like to go a little more retro-chic, create a cat eye and a softer red lip using Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Fearless with Crème Anglaise from the Irresistibly Charming Mini Lip Gloss Kit (Pink) over it.

The Lip Kits also work well with many different skin tones. For deeper skin tones, I love a wash of gold shadow over the lids (try Eyeshadow in Amber Lights) and a deep, berry lip using Lip Pencil in Burgundy and Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Sultana over it.

Adding to the versatility of the Mini Patentpolish Lip Kits, try a more natural, everyday look by filling in your lips with Lip Pencil in Whirl and using Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Mojo Maker (only available as part of the new lip kit) on top.

For a day when you’re feeling a little more girly and flirty, try using Lip Pencil in Rosy Rim and topping it with Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Pleasant—super cute!”

In case you missed it, the super-talented Charlotte Tilbury took home Makeup Artist of the Year at the first-ever InStyle Awards. We couldn’t be more happy for her! But even on a night that celebrated Tilbury’s accomplishments, she didn’t sit back and relax. True to form, the ever-busy Tilbury got to working her magic on three friends attending the award show with her—Miranda Kerr, Alessandra Ambrosio and Olivia Culpo. We loved all three looks (that goes without saying) and couldn’t resist asking how to re-create them. Thankfully, Tilbury’s team agreed to tell us!

Ladies, this is for your gents: We’ve got grooming tips and picks from two of our own facial-hair enthusiasts. Share these with any Mo Bros in your life to keep his ’stache from veering into unwieldy territory.

Since 2003, the Movember Foundation has been deploying state-of-the-art mustaches as conversation starters to raise awareness and funds for men’s health. The movement challenges participants to grow, share and get active. But to be inducted as a Mo Bro (or a Mo Sista supporting all her Mo Bros) requires following a few rules and knowing a thing or two about facial-hair care.

We enlisted a couple of our grooming gurus to help with rules: 1) start clean-shaven, 2) grow and groom for the entire month so you can reach your full mustachioed potential without breaking rule 3) no fakes, no beards, no goatees. Both Gerald Grinter, counter manager for men’s fragrance in Seattle, and Sankil Ward, men’s accessories and furnishings manager at the Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego, will be sporting their own mustaches this month, along with members of their teams.

Here’s what you need to know and the products Grinter and Ward swear by.

There are so many options when it comes to your foundation wardrobe. We know! Primers, tinted moisturizers, concealers, finishing powders … we have hundreds of ’em. While we love choices, we also love some great advice for selecting the perfect foundation and supplementary products. So we’re enlisting the expertise of a few Beauty Stylists to be 100% ensured of the best look possible, whatever the skin type or concern. They had so much information to share, we’re making it a miniseries.

I believe that your skin is so important! That’s why I can’t live without my Kate Somerville Dermal Quench Liquid Lift. I prime my face by spraying this before foundation. It plumps out fine lines and gives my skin a lift.

Armani Luminous Silk Foundation is what I apply next. It’s my favorite foundation! I apply it with the beautyblender and my fingertips. It gives you a beautiful glow.

I set my foundation with DiorSkin Nude Air Powder. It holds my makeup on all day and adds a healthy glow!

My perfect foundation look includes five products. After applying my skincare, I move on with a generous amount of the Laura Mercier Radiance Primer. This primer is amazing for any skin type and makeup application. You will look like you have a soft-focus lens on your face and beam with a soft glow. Blend all over the face with fingertips.

Next, I use the Amorepacific CC Compact in color 106. The CC compact is so wonderful! It has a powerful broad-spectrum SPF 50, is ultra hydrating and provides long-lasting, flawless coverage. I apply this compact with the Bobbi Brown Full-Coverage Brush.

Under my eyes, I first apply La Prairie Cellular Eye Essence Platinum Rare. This instantly lifts, firms and brightens–it’s perfect under any concealer! Then I use the new Dior Fix it 2 in 1 Prime & Conceal Concealer, two light swipes under each eye, then tap it in with your ring finger. This concealer has a built in primer, so it glides on flawlessly and provides excellent coverage that lasts all day.

Last, I set everything with the LaMer Translucent Setting Powder. This powder is light, luminous and so silky, so you can use a generous amount without a dry or chalky look. I apply my foundation everyday at 6am, and I am ready for my day, which starts by taking my 8 year old to school. Then I head to work, come home make dinner, help with homework, read a bedtime story…and before I know it, it’s 11pm, and I haven’t had a minute to look in the mirror until I’m ready to wash my face. But my foundation looks just good as when I applied it that morning!

For us makeup lovers, Halloween is a favorite night to get a little crazy with our brushes. Here at Nordstrom, we have an army of super-talented makeup artists and Beauty Stylists, so we met with a couple of them—along with some up-for-anything co-workers—for a mini photo shoot to create four Halloween makeup ideas. From amping up the volume on glam to letting the imagination (and eyeshadow) run wild, we’re sharing each this week to inspire getting into the spirit this October 31.

For our final Halloween look, Brooklyn Benjestorf—one of our pro copywriters—gets into the spirit with a fantastical doe, though this look could easily be transitioned into a number of creatures. Samantha Ruud, the artist who created this look, has all the steps to releasing your inner spirit animal.
