Gifted: Voluspa Candles

What’s that they say about cocktail hour—it’s 5 o’clock somewhere? It must be someone’s birthday too, right? Let our new Gifted posts point you in the direction of stylish presents all year long.

Makassar ebony. Cypress needle. Muscari. If you don’t have a plant-identification book handy, these names might sound like sci-fi fodder. But they’re all naturally occurring elements from good old Mother Earth, and more importantly, they’re ingredients in some of our favorite Voluspa offerings.

These amber-, amethyst- and otherwise dark-hued specimens feel especially right as the leaves and the weather turn and rich, earthy, autumnal notes permeate our world. And boy do they permeate: Voluspa’s clean-burning, coconut-wax blend optimizes the fragrance throw, so the scent all but slithers out of the glass and snakes around the entire room.

With dark, Baroque-esque packaging that looks like it might also have aesthetic roots in Victorian-era decor, this is our best bet for an end-of-October treat.

Our beauty trend editor, Kate Fannin, loves Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics so much. Let her count the ways.

With Halloween right around the corner fun beauty products are a must, which is why I’m so excited that Nordstrom is now selling OCC (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics). Their Lip Tars are perfect for creating any color imaginable. Here are seven reasons to become obsessed…

1. Lip Tar: crazy name, awesome product. Use alone or MIX them to create your own ‘bespoke’ color—check out the Electric Orchid color I created. Tap into your creative side and let us know what you invent!

2. Color names include Captain Howdy, Pool Boy, Electric Sheep, and Leeloo (any reference to The Fifth Element instantly ups the cool factor).

3. The Lip Tar Primer is one of the best I’ve ever used. It melts into lips and has serious staying power to “grip” the Tars.

4. We spotted Lip Tars in use backstage during NYFW SS15. If they’re good enough for the pros, they’re good enough for me!

5. The Colour Pencils can be used as lip liner or eyeliner; I’m all about using the hot-pink color, Anime, as a night-out eyeliner.

6. There’s even a clear, anti-feathering pencil that keeps the Tars from wandering.

7. Who doesn’t love a brand name that validates beauty junkies everywhere? Obsessed? Check. Compulsive? Unashamedly so. Cosmetics? Obvi.

And that’s my take,
Kate

Circus performers, psychics, pop darling Lily Allen, So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley and Kim Kardashian looking positively radiant in the ‘Golden Goddess’ palette? Yes, it’s true: the Charlotte Tilbury VIP Launch Party on October 9 was a decadently gorgeous affair.

Held outside our store at The Grove in LA, Charlotte Tilbury’s Makeup Your Destiny Launch Party and two-day Beauty Festival was a carnival-themed extravaganza, including a Mesmerizing Eye Bar, a K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lip Bar and one-on-one ‘Tilbury Transformations’ with members of the British beauty maven’s varsity squad.

The powerhouse turnout was no surprise, of course. You might recall that Tilbury crafted Amal Alamuddin’s makeup look—using the ‘Sophisticate’ eye palette and Chic to Cheek Blush in ‘Love Glow’—when Alamuddin married George Clooney. Her client list is star-studded. But devotees of the renowned expert’s holistic approach also appreciated the presence of notable naturopath Dr. Nigma, who demonstrated the incredible age-erasing capabilities of Charlotte Tilbury’s cult-status skincare line.

Our photo album is like a retroactive full-access pass. Enjoy!

Trending Now: Night Shades

Kate Fannin introduces our favorite beauty trend right now: night shades for eyes.

hero

The smoky eye gets dusky this season—grounded in cool, flinty shades of slate gray and metallic pewter. This trend can be smoldering and sultry for night (try our new “halo” technique below), or you can simply define your waterline for a modern approach for day. Shimmering cocoa adds yet another option that’s perfect for day or night.

Nails can accent this edgy yet feminine look with gunmetal, mica or black patent polish and accented with gold flecks for a shock of color.

Try this trend yourself with Charlotte Tilbury’s pro tips for creating a super-easy smoky eye.

M·A·C shares the trade secrets and products behind the looks they designed for the runways at Fashion Week.

MAC-Fashion-Week-Recap-2

At Rolando Santana, Director of Makeup Artistry Romero Jennings was inspired by the idea of a glowing, daytime smoky eye. Using eyeshadow creams, he created a satiny lavender shade that swept over the upper eyelid and wrapped around the outside corner of the eye to the lower eyelid. Vanilla Pigment was the star product for the skin. He accented cheekbones by buffing the product to reveal its pearl finish.
