Beauty Blog All Things Beauty from Nordstrom Wed, 27 May 2015 18:41:36 +0000 en-US hourly 1 How to Get a Sunless Tan with Bronzer | M•A•C Guest Post Wed, 27 May 2015 18:22:13 +0000

M•A•C Cosmetics Senior Artist Gina Bettelli dishes out tips on getting that warm, healthy summer glow without the need for exposure to harmful UV rays.
Sunless tan makeup tips
The perfect sunless tan is a look all of your favorite celebrities have, and you can too! It’s that sandy, caramel tone that’s both chic and effortless. Achieving the perfect tan is about getting the finished look to be believable. Here’s how to do it.

MAC Cosmetics Wash & Dry Studio Sculpt Defining Bronzing Powder is a unique gel formula that feels lightweight and sculpts the face. It’s a silky, sheer powder in realistic, sun-soaked shades–like M∙A∙C Wash & Dry’s Golden Rinse. Sweep the bronzer along your forehead, temples and jaw in the shape of a “3” for an everyday warmth using the 126 Split Fibre Large Face Brush.

Take your tan to the next level by dusting Studio Sculpt Defining Bronzing Powder in a “W” shape across cheeks, nose and chin. Whisk Mineralize Skinfinish powder high on the cheekbones with a fluffy brush to imitate a sunny flush.

For a luxurious, glowy base, prep your face for bronzer and finishing powder with Mineralize Moisture SPF 15 Foundation and soak up all the approving nods from your peers.

Vacation Beauty Tips and Essentials: 3 Must-Haves from 8 Beauty Stylists Fri, 15 May 2015 23:47:20 +0000 long-weekend-beauty-bag

It’s travel season, and we’re all daydreaming about vacations and long weekends and a few lazy days to come. We love looking our best, but we’re also always on the lookout for multi-taskers, must-haves and travel-sized beauty products to keep packing as painless as possible. We asked a handful of our Online Beauty Stylists to let us in on their favorite destinations, some pro tips and what they pack to get away.

My getaway spot would be California, my home state. You can never get bored there. If I’m not catching up with my family, you can find me going on a hike or relaxing on the beach. I can’t get enough of the sun. Rain or shine these are the three things you will never find me without:

1. Supergoop! continuous mist broad spectrum SPF 50: Doesn’t matter where I’m at, I always keep Supergoop with me. I feel like people don’t take sun protection seriously–including my sisters. I was known to spray them when they’re not looking–now they are hooked. I’ll protect everyone one spray at a time.

2. Clarins beauty flash balm: I like to call this “my energy in a tube.” I love to apply this after a flight for a quick pick me up; it helps eliminate any sign of fatigue in a flash.

3. philosophy purity made simple one-step facial cleanser: This cleanser is hands down the best. After a long day, I turn to Purity to melt away any dirt, oil and makeup off my face. It leaves my skin feeling so fresh and so clean.

My idea of an amazing weekend is turning up at my favorite clubs. Eye roll, I know. But I grew up in the middle of nowhere (I’m pretty sure my hometown doesn’t have a Wikipedia page), and I’m still in my early twenties, so big-city clubbing hasn’t lost its novelty on me. Here are my faves for looking my best on the dance floor.

1. St. Tropez self tan bronzing mousse: Out dancing, you’re probably showing a little skin, and you’ll probably want a little golden glow. St. Tropez shatters nearly every self-tanner stereotype: it gives a natural hue that isn’t yellow—or worse, orange (scary!)—there’s no overt self-tan smell, and NO streaks. Whether you have a natural warmth or you’re genetically glow-in-the-dark (aka me), St. Tropez is a must have for an all-over bronze.

2. Creed Virgin Island Water fragrance: Experts often speak about how powerfully scent impacts how people view one another. Same here. I’m always talking about it, because it’s true! Virgin Island Water is a vacation in a bottle. Less National Lampoon’s Vacation and more Kate Moss and Naomi on a yacht in the Caribbean.

3. DERMAdoctor® MED e TATE® antiperspirant wipes: If you’re doing it right, your body will probably want to sweat while you’re dancing. It’s okay though; it happens to everyone. Except me. Sorry. I use DERMAdoctor MED e TATE antiperspirant wipes. 😉 They keep me totally sweat free no matter what. I’ve been in crowded clubs when my fave song has come on and still have been as dry as a ’90s movie anti-hero during an intense club scene.

My Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day are already accounted for with some legendary plans, and there are some essentials that I definitely need to bring with me to cover the basics. From a waterless cleanser to a touch of makeup: these are the simple-but-necessary items you will always catch in my bag.

1. philosophy purity made simple facial cleansing cloths: Whether going camping, traveling in a car or just committing a good chunk of time to Netflix (totally has been me on more than one occasion), these cloths are for anyone who can’t get to a shower or just doesn’t have the energy at the end of the day. No sink required. They’re super soft and gentle enough to use on the eye area. They come in a pack of thirty, are disposable and are travel friendly (and nightstand friendly, too).

2. Somme Institute mobile travel kit: Everything in this travel kit is under three ounces, and it all comes in a clear case (perfect for carry-ons). You have everything you need for a full skincare regimen, including: Nourishing Cleanser, Transport (14 treatment pads), Serum, A-Bomb Moisturizer and Double Defense Sun Protection. It’s also a really great way to just experiment with the line. But trust me; once you try, you’ll be addicted.

3. CHANEL Le Volume de CHANEL mascara: You may have guessed that this product would be on my list. There is just something about long, thick and luscious black lashes. You will always find this little gem in my cosmetic bag.

My weekend getaway would be having a blast and looking fierce in Sin City. Viva Las Vegas! Here are my top three products that I would never leave home without.

1. Anastasia Beverly Hills five item brow kit: I go nowhere unless my eyebrows are looking 150% their best. Eyebrows frame the face and sculpt the eye. Your look is immediately enhanced with perfected brows.

2. SK-II facial treatment mask: Let’s get real–you don’t really sleep in Vegas. This bad boy is 10 hours of sleep in a mask; it tones, helps keep your complexion radiant and is easily absorbed. Under-eyes and skin are immediate revitalized.

3. Sunday Riley Good Genes treatment: This can be used day and night. It really is a facial in a bottle. It exfoliates my skin, plumps uneven texture and immediately brightens, so I don’t need to wear heavy foundation. This is liquid gold. One pump does what six skincare products do combined.

I would not be without these great travel must haves on my weekend away to the lake cabin to play in the SUN!

1. ARCONA Sunsations mineral makeup SPF 25: Protect your skin using this handy, family-friendly SPF Brush. It’s mineral packed and lets you apply chemical-free sunscreen to the entire family with no spills or leaks in your bag!

2. M·A·C Mini fix: This is the best way to set makeup on the go, or mist for a quick cool down. This mini-spa moment is packed with vitamins, minerals and calming ingredients for the skin. A must in your bag.

3. Bobbi Brown empties: Gone are the days using mystery samples and bottles when traveling! Another genius idea from Bobbi Brown is to fill these TSA-approved empties with your favorite skincare to pamper your skin on the go.

My life revolves around the city; I live and work in the urban jungle. I miss fresh air, stars and silence. My brother has a mini farm with goats and chickens an hour outside of the city. It’s the perfect place to refresh and get back to nature. I have a special travel bag ready to go with my favorite products that I keep just for this trip.

1. Shiseido Extra Smooth sun protection lotion broad spectrum SPF 38: I love having a sunscreen for face and body together. It really cuts down on the number of products that I need to bring with me. This sunscreen doesn’t look greasy on the oily areas of my skin. UVA and UVB protection are very important even on cloudy days!

2. Clarins hand & nail treatment cream: When you are petting goats and throwing a Frisbee with dog drool on it, you wash your hands a lot. To make sure they don’t dry out, I always lather up the hand cream. This hand cream lasts through a few washes. It also keeps my dry cuticles at bay!

3. Moroccanoil treatment: I have highlighted hair, and I need to keep it protected. When we head to the river, the water can do a number on my hair. I just add a few drops to the ends of my hair to keep it moisturized.

I’m all about jet setting when going on vacation. Get me as far away from home and my daily comforts, please! But, I’m also all about simplicity while traveling. I’m always exploring what new countries have to offer, so I need quick and easy skincare items that I know are effective and beneficial for me. I love seeing ancient ruins, I just don’t want my face to become one of them!

1. CLARISONIC SMART Profile set: Simply amazing. Enough said. You were right, everybody! It’s even better than the original Clarisonic!

2. Somme Institute transport: Soft and gentle, yet so very effective. These pads exfoliate, nourish with vitamins and help with hydration. They keep things easy while on the run to your next destination.

3. Sisley Paris Eau Efficace gentle make-up remover: Quick and to the point. It’s a toner and cleanser you don’t need to rinse off. Perfect for a red-eye flight.

On my long weekend away you can usually find me at some sort of music festival. My favorite one is Essence Fest in New Orleans. I’ll be dancing in the Big Easy grooving on Bourbon Street or somewhere in the French Quarter listening to a live band. I have three must-have items that will follow me where ever I go.

1. Julep Beauty Konjac cleansing sponge: Cannot live without this to ensure my skin is cleaned properly. Especially after a long humid night of dancing until the sun comes up. I love that I can pair it with my favorite cleanser or use it alone to slough off an eventful night on Bourbon Street.

2. Supergoop!® City & Sand sunscreen travel tote : I love that it’s anti aging, and it also protects my skin from UVA and UVB rays. Plus, it doesn’t leave a cast over my skin. It’s a perfect little kit that includes basic sun care essentials. The moisturizer is hydrating but not too heavy where I experience any breakouts. I never leave home without it.

3. Kate Somerville Somerville360° tanning towelettes: I’m a transplant to the Northwest from the South, and I love to look like I have been kissed by the sun, so I’m always armed with extra towelettes. They make me feel like the Sun Goddess I truly am.

See all the featured moms in our series on The Thread.

Aerin-Lauder-Mothers-Day-1 As the founder and creative director of AERIN and the style and image director at Estée Lauder, Aerin Lauder wears a lot of hats. Oh, let’s throw wife and mother of two into the mix. We’re not quite sure how she manages all of that with such stylish aplomb, but she did take a few minutes away from it all to give The Thread a glimpse into her life as a mom who’s long on to-dos and short on time (read: every mom out there)—and what makes it all worthwhile.

My style in three words:

Effortless, chic, modern.

What being a mom means to me in three words:

Rewarding, loving, chaotic.

The best thing my kids could ever give me is:

Handmade cards with personal notes.Aerin-Lauder-Mothers-Day-2No, but seriously, I’d love to unwrap:

A framed photo of my boys.

The best thing my partner could ever give me is:

Time together as a family.

No, but seriously, I’d love to wake up to:

Breakfast at home with my husband and boys, and a beautiful bouquet of fresh spring flowers.

Every mom needs:

A signature scent. I love to give a fragrance—it’s so tied up with memories of being a little girl and smelling my mother’s perfume. I think the best all-purpose gift, suitable for any wonder woman, is:

Kate’s Take: Age Is Just a Number Sun, 26 Apr 2015 15:00:21 +0000 Our beauty trend editor Kate Fannin gives us the low down on the best and brightest in anti-aging products.

As I celebrate my birthday today, it’s the perfect time to mention some favorite anti-aging products (and some that just make me feel or look younger than my 42 years!).

I started using sunscreen in high school (and am thankful I did; I shockingly still get carded sometimes). Also, I diligently follow my dad’s greatest ‘beauty’ advice, “keep a lip balm in every jacket pocket”–that has saved my lips more times than I can count! Ultimately, you’re truly as young as you feel, but a little ‘preventative maintenance’ and good old-fashioned primping never hurts. Nor does a glass of champagne and gourmet cupcake on your b-day…

La Mer Radiant Concealer: All the wonderfulness of La Mer in a creamy, luxurious concealer with the added bonus of SPF 25.

Dolce & Gabbana Passioneyes Mascara: Seriously my new favorite mascara; it lengthens and layers like a dream.

PAULA’S CHOICE ‘Skin Perfecting’ 2% BHA Liquid: The perfect amount of active ingredients to be effective without any harshness (even on semi-sensitive skin)–you’ll truly feel results in less than a week!

Supergoop Serum SPF 30: The one product I absolutely will not leave the house without–no matter the weather.

Jo Malone Wild Bluebell Cologne: This scent honestly makes me feel younger. It’s light-hearted, lovely and lush!

Fresh Sugar Lip Serum: Because lips need more attention than we give them, this is the first step for a youthful pucker.

YSL Le Teint Saharienne Blur Perfector: Choose a slightly darker shade to use as a bronzer or for sculpting. You won’t believe the amazing scent and luxe texture!.

Clinique All About Eyes: There’s a reason this has won so many beauty awards.

Napolean Perdis Mask: Beyond the velvety texture and yummy scent, this leave-on moisturizer is perfect just before your nightly beauty sleep.

Estee Lauder Pure Color Lip Lacquer: Cushiony, non-sticky texture, great scent, and just the right amount of color = the perfect go-to gloss.

Dr. Gross Alpha Beta Glotion Self-Tanning Moisturizer: Super easy to apply and it leaves just the right amount of glow. Bonus points for a pleasant scent!

Nars Dual-Intensity Blush in Jubilation: Just a hint of color when used dry, or add a little intensity by applying wet–the perfect alternative to bronzer.

Jack Black Lip Balm: With SPF 25 and the unisex, cool blue tube, Dad was pretty glad I left one in his jacket pocket.

And that’s my take!

Eyeshadow 101| M•A•C Guest Post Thu, 23 Apr 2015 17:55:40 +0000

M∙A∙C Cosmetics Senior Artist Ashley Rudder shows how to use M•A•C’s Nordstrom Naturals Eyes X 15 palette, a Nordstrom exclusive, to create two classic, head-turning looks.

Knowing how to work every color in an eyeshadow palette can be intimidating, but that’s where I come in to help. I’m here to unshackle you from your current eyeshadow rut with a touch of makeup theory and a couple of placement options. As a guide, I’ll be referring to the Nordstrom Natural Eyes X 15 palette. If you don’t own an eyeshadow palette already, this is a brilliant option, since it is comprised of Nordstrom’s best-selling M∙A∙C Cosmetics eyeshadow colors.

Eyeshadow Textures

Your eyeshadow and your clothing wardrobe are very similar: You want to have a range of pieces so that you can dress appropriately and with style! I want you to be able to curate your eyeshadow looks based on your mood, so let’s start by first discussing textures.

For a quick look that is polished and effortless, matte shades will anchor your look. Matte shadows look good with anything and can be dressed up or down. Matte textured shadows have a smooth, flat appearance and a rich, saturated color payoff. These textures look sophisticated, elegant and, due to their light-absorbing nature, add depth in the contours of your eye as well.

While mattes are a great staple, a mix of textures is necessary to create a luxe look, which brings us to frost-textured shadows. For a more conservative use of frost, I recommend using eyeshadow with a velvet finish, such as Vanilla. For nighttime, a veluxe pearl-textured shadow like Woodwinked amps up any look. It’s all about the time of day you choose to wear your frost shadow. For a nighttime look, you can push the envelope and play with light, and a reflective frost shadow will draw attention to the eye. When using frost, remember to start soft with matte and satin textures, then you can work your way up to frost, and then, the mother of all frosts—glitter.

Color Depth

Color depth is all based on your skin tone. To keep it simple, we’ll use the terms light, medium and deep.

Light Shades: 1–2 shades lighter than your skin tone.

When you use shades that are lighter than your skin tone, it creates a spotlight effect. Just like spotlights on a stage, you need to strategically place lighter shades on special features to celebrate them or to distract from another area. Popular places to highlight (no matter your age) are the highest point underneath the brow or the tear duct area. Remember: matte shades are great for day and as you transition to night, you can dial up the reflective quality of the shadows you choose.

Medium Shades: 1 shade darker than your skin tone.

Medium tones are usually used as blending shades or to contour softly. Use them to buff any color of shadow back into skin, giving your shadow application that coveted professional blend.

Deep Shades: 2–3+ shades darker than your skin tone.

Use these shades to add depth and richness to a feature, like the lash line as eyeliner or into the crease of the eye.

Color Placement

Knowing your bone structure is everything when applying your eyeshadow.

First, you’ll need to locate your orbital bone. Use your pointer finger and feel around your eye for the hard bone that surrounds and protects your eyes. Your crease is not where the fold of your eyelid is; it is actually where your orbital bone is. This is where the darker colors should go. When you apply your darker shades on the bone and not your fold, you will still be able to see all of your hard work when your eyes are open!

Eyeshadow Looks

A beautiful eyeshadow application is basically like creating a gradient of color on the eye to make it appear shapelier. In order to stay in control of your look, you should start by using your medium shades first. Medium shades prime the eye for lighter and darker color placement.

Look 1: The Classic Contoured Eye

Choose a medium color in a matte texture like Omega, Saddle or Wedge, and use a fluffy crease brush like 224 Tapered Blending Brush or 217 Blending Brush to blend it into your crease. Use the 219 Pencil Brush under your lower lash line. Blend the color outward to give yourself room if you wish to apply deeper shades next.

Apply a deeper matte shade like Saddle, Brun or Embark to your crease. Remember to leave a halo of your medium eyeshadow shade above it to blend. If your darker shades need more blending, put a bit more of your medium tone on your blending brush to soften the edges. If you use more of the dark color, you’ll run the risk of the color getting too dark.

You can add a third deeper shade to the outer crease if you desire. You will want to use a smaller blending brush like the 219 Pencil Brush to do this, as to not cover up your other two colors.

Finally, take some creative liberties: your eyelid and your brow are available for a lovely matte or frost shade of your choice, depending on the time of day or occasion when you will be rocking your new eyeshadow look.

Look 2: The Smoky Look

The coveted smoky look is all about placement and achieving the perfect blend.

Remember: you can achieve a smoky eye with any color variation! Eyes on M∙A∙C palettes feature four color waves (Amber Times Nine, Burgundy Times Nine, Navy Times Nine and Purple Times Nine), which all allow for creating smoky looks in multiple colors.

Starting with a medium color (based on your skin tone) in a matte texture such as Omega, Saddle or Wedge, use a fluffy crease brush like 224 Tapered Blending Brush or 217 Blending Brush to blend it on your eyelid starting from your lash line. Bring it up onto your brow bone, and use the 219 Pencil Brush under your lower lash line. If you plan on using more shades, blend this color up higher to give yourself room to apply the deeper shades next.

Use a deep matte, satin or frost textured shade like Mulch. Be mindful to leave a halo of your medium eyeshadow shade above it to create that perfect blend. Again, if your darker shades need more blending, put a bit more of your medium tone on your blending brush to soften the edges. If you use more of the dark color, you’ll run the risk of achieving panda eyes and not the airbrushed effect that we are going for.

Next, you can add a third deeper shade to the lid if you desire. You will want to use a smaller blending brush like the 219 Pencil Brush to do this so that you don’t cover up your other two colors, and wrap it around the eye close to your lash line. This is when things get sultry so proceed with caution!

With this makeup theory, palette and color placement, your options are endless! If your eyeshadow isn’t quite looking how you want it, come by your local Nordstrom’s M∙A∙C counter and a M∙A∙C Artist can walk you through the steps to achieve your perfect eyeshadow look in person.

You Give, We Give: Great News You Can Use About Nordstrom Gift Cards Tue, 14 Apr 2015 21:00:57 +0000 Giving the perfect gift is right up there on the list of things that feel amazing, but it just got even better. Nordstrom is now donating 1% of Gift Card proceeds to our nonprofit partners. That means when you give, you give twice. You give powerfully.

We believe in connecting with and empowering the communities we are part of, so we’re thrilled to be supporting organizations that positively impact our cities. As part of our 2015 focus on youth and kids, your Gift Card contributions will help Ronald McDonald House, Boys and Girls Clubs, Special Olympics and other like-minded enterprises as they literally change the world.

For a closer look at how one Northwest-based charity transforms lives via a quintessential childhood experience, keep reading.

World Series champion pitcher Jamie Moyer and his wife, Karen, began the Moyer Foundation as a way to serve children dealing with grief and family addiction. A cornerstone of their approach is Camp Mariposa, a free weekend camp for children affected by a family member’s substance abuse. Children meet other kids dealing with similar issues and receive support and tools for managing their complex emotions.

But they also get a place to just be a kid for the weekend. The Moyer Foundation works with top mental-health and youth organizations to program and organize the camp, with the goal being to break the family’s cycle of addiction.

“Camp really let me express not only myself but my feelings, too,” says a 13-year-old Mariposa camper that we got connected with through the Moyer Foundation. “It was a gateway to a fresh start, and helped me understand and learn how to cope in different ways.”

We’re honored to help kids like her, and the Moyers, and we couldn’t do it without you.

We know what probably comes to your mind when we mention rose-scented perfumes. Old fashioned. Overpowering. Old lady. Until recently we may have felt similarly, but now we think it’s time to rethink roses. Revamped formulations and unexpected scent combinations make for some extraordinary fragrances with rose notes. Read on as our Online Beauty Stylists share their expertise and give us a few of their favorite, modern rose perfumes and fragrances—with a few notable classics thrown in.

Yves Saint Laurent is such a classic brand, and I love that this fragrance hasn’t lost any elegance or sophistication throughout the years. Perfectly refined, joyful and romantic.

I remember when Vera Wang eau de parfum launched, and it cleared off the shelves! Notes of rose, gardenia, lotus flower, woods and musk flow so nicely together for a fragrance that’s sophisticated and feminine. Danielle Holmquist

M•A•C Guest Post: How to Get the Kate Spade Fashion Week Runway Look Fri, 13 Mar 2015 19:00:25 +0000

M∙A∙C Cosmetics Senior Artist Ashley Rudder explains how to re-create the face used for Kate Spade’s A/W ’15 runway show at New York Fashion Week.

“What was your favorite show this season?” That’s a question I keep hearing in the wake of Fashion Month. A slight bit of panic ensues after anyone asks me what my favorite looks were this season! However, as I mentally scroll through all of the glorious A/W ’15 shows, a few standout looks come to mind: perhaps the romantic, smoky-grey eyes that were created at Thom Browne? Or the futuristic “Bond Girl” black-and-white eyeliner at The Blonds?

Surprisingly enough, the look at Kate Spade–created by M∙A∙C Cosmetics Director of Makeup Artistry Lyne Desnoyers–has remained my makeup crush all season long!

I don’t want to keep this crush to myself, so here is how you can get the look (one you might get after walking on a brisk fall evening through the woods) with its subtly flushed cheeks and rosy pouts.

Velvety Fall Skin
To get this luxurious matte skin, M∙A∙C Artists used the new backstage must have–M∙A∙C’s Studio Waterweight SPF 30 Foundation (available Autumn/Winter 2015). This foundation was buffed into the skin using a soft face brush, like 109 small contour brush. Until this incredible product arrives in stores, the Face & Body Foundation gives a similar look.

Next, gently powder only through the center of the face using Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder to ensure that your t-zone looks diffused and perfected.

The Cool-est Eyes
These eye products don’t just look smart, they are smart due to their longwearing formulas, chosen to create these perfectly preppy eyes.

First, gently wash M∙A∙C Powder Blush in ‘Tailor Grey’ (a gorgeous muted, taupey-grey) through the crease to create a contour that is cooler in tone. This will mimic the tones that the eye takes on when there’s a chill in the air. For medium and deeper skin tones, use the Paint Pot in ‘Groundwork’ or ‘Quite Natural’ as shade substitutions. Remember, you aren’t going for a “fierce” eye contour, so use a duo-fiber tapered blending brush like the 286 duo fibre blending brush to wash the easy-to-blend cream shadow softly onto your brow bone. This will accentuate your natural bone structure for that effortlessly polished look that Kate Spade is known for.

Next, use eyeshadow in ‘Yogurt’ (a sophisticated, yet feminine pink), and gently press it on lids using a soft flat brush like the 217 Blending Brush. The cool tone of the grey in the crease, paired with the subtle pink on the lid is stunning, and so polished!

Pretty, Plush Lashes
To create a lush fringe of lashes, press Fluidline gel in ‘Dipdown’ into your top lash line with the tip of a thin eyeliner brush like the 209 Eyeliner Brush. This will create a very thin, barely-there line that will make you look like you have thousands of mink-like lashes.

Then, curl your lashes, and follow with Extended Play Gigablack Lash, which defines each and every lash and provides long-lasting curl. Only apply mascara on the top lashes to create a youthful and wide-eyed effect.

You should groom your brows by brushing them up neatly with Brow Set in ‘Clear’, and lightly fill in areas that are sparse if needed.

Winter-Kissed Cheeks
The placement of the blush is what created the brisk mood for the look at Kate Spade. At the show, Tailored to Tease Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour (available autumn/winter 2015) was lightly swept on the apples of the cheeks, and blended down for that slightly athletic, girly flush.

To re-create the look now, grab Pro Longwear Blush in ‘Peach Twist’ to get that soft, matte, pinky-rose flush.

Bitten Lips
This style of lip is reborn this season by using a burnt red, rather than the eggplant and merlot shades that were all the rage in 2014.

For the perfect application, prepping your lips is paramount, so start by using Lip Conditioner to plump up and smooth out the texture of winter-beaten lips. For the “blurred edge” effect, press on lipstick in ‘Dare You’ with a fluffy eyeshadow brush like the 217 Blending Brush, and apply it in thin layers to build that wintery stain.

This look will have you looking fresh-faced, and oh so chic! Get ready for the compliments to come rolling in!

Kate’s Take: New York Fashion Week Top Beauty Trends Sat, 28 Feb 2015 23:55:01 +0000 From “Rock & Roll Spanish Women” and “Smoky Chelsea Girls,” to “Utilitarian Punk” and “Twiggy’s Daughter”—these were just a few of the inspirations heard backstage as we endured the freezing temps in NYC for Fall 2015 Fashion Week. Equipped with weatherproof boots (thank yo,u Aquatalia and Valentino!) and Mom’s super-warm hand-knit legwarmers (thank you, MOM!), we braved wind, snow and sauna-like backstage tents to see fall beauty in all its splendor.

The Eyes Have It

Fall has always been the season for the Smoky Eye. And 2015 is no exception, although new, modern approaches make it exciting, sophisticated and definitely dramatic. Regardless of the techniques and colors used, we saw many cool variations including:

nyfw-aw15-backstage-beauty-n-millerClassic: From gorgeous greys and deep browns, to modern cinnamon and plum tones, smoky never looked so good (Christian Siriano, Alexander Wang, Derek Lam).

Smoldering: Layering deep jewel tones like purple or metallic chocolate created amazing petrol-like lids with almost shimmering finishes (Nicole Miller, Altuzarra, Monique Lhuillier).

Artistic & graphic: Cue the black eyeliner revolution to go beyond the traditional cat eye (Cushnie, Badgley Mischka, Yigal Azrouël).

Just for fun: Crystal and beaded accents will be perfect for a holiday party (Tadashi, Ohne Titel.)

Try it now:
Lancôme | M·A·C | Bobbi Brown | Laura Mercier

The Bold Lip

Red alert! The fall lip is seriously making a statement and in a variety of deep tones. Whether matte, cream or glossy, lips were saturated and refined (translation: applied with purpose—well defined but not always with actual liner). A few standouts included:

Oxblood, inspired by ’90s red leather Doc Martens boots, at 3.1 Phillip Lim.

Ruby, for vampy elegance, at Carolina Herrera.

Saturated crimson to offset “slept-in” eye makeup at Monique Lhuillier.

Dark and sensual matte tones of burgundy and brick at Marchesa and Naeem Khan.

Try it now:
NARS ‘Annabella’ | M·A·C ‘Diva’ | stila ‘Acai Crush’ | Charlotte Tilbury ‘So Marilyn’

Ones to Watch:

Layered nail polish: We LOVE this one because anyone can do it, and it literally doubles your polish wardrobe! Our favorites were nude over white, and red over black (aka “Red Velvet Cupcake” at Kate Spade by Deborah Lippmann). Think of it as bespoke nail art! Shop: nail polish

“Kewpie doll” lashes—spiky and clumpy, yet still somehow wearable—as seen at Nanette Lepore and literally painted on at Carmen Marc Valvo. Consider it the modernized Twiggy effect. Shop: mascara

Bringing out the brows: natural brows are definitely IN, as we saw at ICB, Alexander Wang and Christian Siriano. With so many great brow products available, there’s no need to overgroom or overthink these face framers. Shop: brow products

“Undone hair”: think ropey, slept-in and intentionally imperfect. It’s all about a raw texture (sleep in braids for the perfect next-day waviness seen at Novis and Altuzarra). But as one stylist reminded us, “keep it clean…not dirty or grungy.” Shop: hair care

And that’s my take!

At the Oscars: Charlotte Tilbury Channels Old Hollywood for Sienna Miller Tue, 24 Feb 2015 06:56:36 +0000 Sure, there’s a lot of buzz about the dresses on the red carpet (rightly so!), but what about all that beautiful makeup? For her gorgeous look, Sienna Miller tapped her longtime friend (and one of the best makeup artists around) Charlotte Tilbury. We asked Tilbury to share what it’s like behind the scenes getting ready for the red carpet at the Academy Awards. Here’s how she created the look (while the two rocked out to some Bob Dylan).

1.    Charlotte started with her Goddess skin clay mask, a product she says “is the key to shrinking pores and tightening the skin, leaving you with a perfectly dewy, plumped and revived red-carpet glow.”

2.    Magic Cream (Charlotte’s secret to red-carpet skin) and Wonderglow were applied to hydrate the skin and create a soft focus, which she says is “amazing for HDTV.”

3.    Next, Charlotte applied Light Wonder foundation in 6 medium and 7 medium, then the retoucher concealer in 2 fair under the eyes and 3 medium for the rest of Sienna’s face.

4.    Air Brush Flawless Finish powder in 1 fair and 2 medium was applied only to the T-zone to control shine while keeping from taking away from the dewiness on the rest of the skin.

5.    To enhance Sienna’s eyebrows, Charlotte used Brow Lift in Grace K and Cara D.

6.    Rock ‘n’ Kohl eye pencil in Bedroom Black and the Feline Flick quick fine line shodo pen were used over the lash line to dramatically define the eyes.

7.    Using her eye smudger brush, the Luxury eyeshadow palette in The Sophisticate and full fat lashes, Charlotte accentuated Sienna’s “winged” eyes, focusing on the crease and lash-line areas.

8.    To enhance the cheekbones, Charlotte applied Filmstar Bronze & Glow with the powder & sculpt brush, following the hollows of the cheeks and along the jawline with the bronzer and applying the highlighter shade to the top of the cheekbones.

9.    To further accentuate Sienna’s features, Beach Stick in Moon Beach and Ibiza were used to illuminate and sculpt.

10.  To prep the lips, Charlotte used Lip Love lip scrub and Lip Magic. Lip Cheat lip liner in Pillowtalk was applied to mimic the pigment of Sienna’s lips and filled in with K.I.S.S.I.N.G lipstick in Bitch Perfect.

11.  Last, for an allover glow, Charlotte applied Supermodel Body all over Sienna’s limbs.

Want even more step-by-step instructions and smart tips from a famed makeup artist? Meet Charlotte Tilbury in person as she recreates some of her red-carpet looks at Nordstrom The Grove, February 24, 6-8 pm. Call 323.900.1418 to RSVP.

Backstage Beauty: M•A•C for Blue Les Copains by Peter Som Fri, 20 Feb 2015 21:55:52 +0000 nyfw-aw15-backstage-beauty-MAC-Peter-Som-2

It’s Sunday morning and you’ve just woken up. You study last night’s lingering eye makeup in the mirror and think, This looks good. I’m wearing this today!” That’s exactly the eye look seen at Blue Les Copains by Peter Som this morning. Chantel Miller with M•A•C Cosmetics described the makeup as “the girl who used to live downtown but moved uptown. This is her out-to-brunch face; she’s rocking the makeup she had on last night.”

Of course, we don’t advocate sleeping in your makeup, so here’s how to re-create this cool eyeliner look on a clean face. Blacktrack Fluidline was used to line the top lash line, which Chantel then diffused with two shades of shadow: Copperplate and Coquette. She said it made the liner look dirty (in a good way, we promise) and a bit dusty. The lower liner was again Blacktrack, only smudged with the 239 brush. A blue-grey Technakohl eyeliner (new for fall) was applied along the waterline and outer lid only. The effect was made to look like kohl pencil that had worn down, which just somehow looked cooler than a perfect line.

Last, Dusk cream color base (a gorgeous brown) was pressed into the center of the lower lash line. This beautiful sheen was again meant to look like the kohl pencil had worn off a bit, which only gave the appearance of a slightly lived-in feel with a lot more character. We loved Chantel’s advice about why we should try layering and blending our eyeliner with eyeshadow this fall; she said it makes the liner look a bit dusty and less black. This is an especially great tip if you think that black liner is too much for you. We can’t wait to experiment!

Backstage Beauty: NARS for Rodarte Wed, 18 Feb 2015 02:38:07 +0000 nyfw-aw15-backstage-beauty-NARS-Rodarte-2

‘Delicate, refined beauty’ were the words renowned makeup artist James Kaliardos used to describe his stunning makeup creation for NARS cosmetics at Rodarte today. We immediately noticed light literally bouncing off the model’s skin, which made us wonder—it’s the middle of winter; how is skin this pearlescent even possible? That was our first moment of wonder. The second happened when we saw the gorgeous glint coming from the models’ eyes. Being the beauty girls that we are, we flocked for a closer inspection. We were delighted to see sparkle underneath the eyes and just knew: this look was our spirit animal.

Prepped skin is the start to achieving a flawless canvas, so Luminous Moisture Cream and Total Replenishing Eye Cream were used first. After foundation and concealer were applied where needed, two new blush shades (out next fall) were used for the cheeks. This new blush can be used wet (simply by spraying your blush brush with a few spritzes of water) or dry. We’re in love with this new texture for its versatility in color and the sheen that makes skin absolutely glow.

Eyes were dressed with the right side of Craving Blush Duo (for now, try South Beach Multiple), liner and mascara. But really, it was all about the jeweled liner along the bottom lashline. Handmade strips of Swarovski crystals were adhered with lash glue underneath the eyes and applied in a straight line (not following the curve of the eye), which made the eyes look bigger.

James wanted the makeup to reflective, transparent and beautiful. This was definitely achieved!

Backstage Beauty: Stila Cosmetics for Alice + Olivia Tue, 17 Feb 2015 07:48:51 +0000 nyfw-aw15-backstage-beauty-stila-alice-olivia-1

The historic Prince George Ballroom provided a stunning backdrop for Alice + Olivia’s Fall 2015 collection. Walking past racks of richly embellished clothing into the backstage makeup area, we knew the accompanying makeup would not disappoint.

Sarah Lucero of stila Cosmetics created a ‘rock and roll bohemian girl who’s a touch romantic’ in this Biba-inspired look. Liquid liner in a glossy black was glided onto the eye first, with black smudge pot just on the end to create a matte soft wing. Mascara was swiped onto the lashes, concentrated more at the roots in the center of the eye for a wide-eyed effect (we love that tip!) for the dreamiest, most feathery lashes we’ve ever seen. Lips were a concoction of two layers of textures—the first, liquid lip paint in a fiery red matte finish, underneath that was a glossy merlot shade for a shiny vinyl finish.

The result was sultry and dramatic, and we’ll definitely take some cues from this swinging starlet look for Fall.

Backstage Beauty: M•A•C for Carmen Marc Valvo Mon, 16 Feb 2015 07:37:06 +0000 nyfw-aw15-backstage-beauty-mac-Carmen-Marc-Valvo-1

Runway to realway spotted backstage at Carmen Marc Valvo: M•A•C lead artist Romero Jennings created “painted-on” lashes by applying black liquid liner directly on lids to mimic real lashes. Spaced evenly and following the natural curve of the lid, they blend right in with real lashes for an artistic approach to mascara.
