BEAUTY 24/7: Israel, you’re from Mississippi and you’ve talked about how fashion was not a big concern for you. What about the whole grooming thing—did you rock the hair gel or use a blow dryer or anything like that?
ISRAEL: No, not really; I kind of just wore whatever and set my hair…free! People used to tell me I had a squirrel’s nest on my head. I definitely wasn’t that into it. It’s different now, though.

So tell us—what do you use now that you never thought you’d use, that you’d never tell the guys back home about?
ISRAEL: I do put on makeup every now and then—foundation I guess you call it.

Really? Just to go out to the mall?
ISRAEL: (laughs) No, when I’ve got work to do, like tonight. It just clears up the skin, makes it look better, so why not?

Katie, what’s your beauty routine now versus how it was before?
KATIE: I started wearing makeup way too early, like around sixth grade. Imagine me as an 11-year-old walking around with sparkly eyeshadow—I looked awful! Now I use more natural colors and eyeshadows and a natural powder because I don’t like to look made up all the time—especially now that I’m living this life where I get my makeup done a lot. When I do my own makeup I like to look like myself.

And how about your hair?
KATIE: In January I cut off six inches and it was the best thing ever. I tend to curl it with my straightener—you know, wrap it around the straightener and pull it down—or sometimes, like tonight, I have a bun. This is my bad-hair-day look!

Katie, you grew up in Chicago—talk about Midwest beauty.
KATIE: It’s funny, the first day I was in L.A. to do the movie, I went to Whole Foods at 6am to get some food, and there was this woman in full ‘face’ and stiletto heels. It was just so foreign to me! People in the Midwest try to look nice, but we’re not as glitzy and glamorous as New York or L.A. My friends and I like a lot of lipsticks and stuff—we focus more on that than our eyes.

So are you a lipstick or a gloss girl?
KATIE: I’m a gloss girl. My best friend is a ‘stick girl, so it’s a bit of an issue.

Israel, what was the weirdest part of the makeup experience on set for you?
ISRAEL: I didn’t really find it that weird. I just considered myself a rag doll for the wardrobe and hair and makeup people, and just let them do their thing—I trusted them. I didn’t like how they sprayed sunscreen on me every morning though—it was freezing!

Wow, that’s interesting they think about things like sunscreen when they’re making a movie.
KATIE: They took care of us! They realized we’re just kids…

You two grew up in the age of YouTube/Facebook/Instagram where everyone is constantly posing or on display. Do you think that helped you feel more comfortable on set?
KATIE: I was definitely more conscious about how I looked, which angles looked good and which didn’t. It’s difficult when you’re trying to act and let go of yourself and be your character. I wasn’t that comfortable being on camera initially, but I definitely wasn’t unfamiliar with it. It was just like taking a picture and thinking about how it’s going to look on Facebook.

Israel, what about you?
ISRAEL: I’m very self-conscious. I don’t like having mirrors on set, to see myself after I’m all dressed up and, um, beautified, if you will. But I have been paying more attention to how I look, definitely, especially since the movie came out—even back home.

Speaking of which: Katie, you still live at home; Israel, you don’t—what do you miss most about it?
ISRAEL: I miss my family, my little brother.

Tips & Tricks:
Before applying your makeup, make sure to polish (exfoliate) and prep your skin. For polishing the skin, I would definitely recommend using a CLARISONIC. The CLARISONIC will remove dead skin cells from the surface of the face, letting your foundation and makeup glide on more evenly. This Smashbox primer is amazing for every skin type. Primer fills in the lines and pores, giving a smooth finish to the face. It will also help control oils throughout the day, making your makeup last longer.

When highlighting the face, the NARS Multiple Stick in ‘Copacabana’ gives the cheekbones added glow to make the skin feel and look brighter and more flawless (shown in the traditional look above).

If you’re the type that doesn’t like reapplying lipstick but desires long-lasting color, try CHANEL Rouge Double Intensité Ultra Wear Lip Colour. There are a variety of colors that look and feel amazing on the lip.

What bride doesn’t want to look her most beautiful on her wedding day? We tapped Beauty Stylist Elina Dugan (pictured above) at our Corte Madera, California, store to flash back on the products that helped her put her best face forward on her special day. Elina was so excited to take on this assignment because it helped her “take a walk down memory lane and relive the getting-ready process of my wedding day.”

Beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin.
1. In preparation for my wedding day, I began using the Clarisonic Plus on my face and body a few months before the actual ceremony so that my skin could really reap the benefits of using this great product.

2. Glow Pads by Dr. Dennis Gross give the complexion a sun-kissed glow, without that fake orange look. Because they provide a gradual color and exfoliate the skin with each use, you have complete control of the depth of the tan you want to achieve. The topical Vitamin D in the glow pads really gives the skin a healthy radiance and tone.

Primer for the face and eyes is the key to a smooth and long-wearing makeup application.
3. My favorite is the foundation primer Radiance by Laura Mercier, which evens out the skin tone with a gorgeous rose gold pigment and perfects the texture of the skin. It’s beautiful when applied to the neck and décolleté, if you want to even out the skin tone without applying makeup there.

4. Oily skin types will love Laura Mercier’s oil-free primer, which has oil controlling properties. For the eyes, I love Laura’s Eye Basics, which not only evens out the texture and skin tone of the eyelid but also makes your eye makeup water resistant.

The day you’ve dreamed of is finally here!
5. Let’s face it, preparing for a wedding can be stressful and cost you hours of sleep, so under-eye concealer will become your best friend. I’m such a fan of La Mer concealer for its whipped and creamy texture, its hydrating properties and its ability to reduce darkness in the eye area over time. It’s great to get skincare benefits from your makeup!

6. Setting your foundation with a loose setting powder will give your skin a satin finish and ensure a long wear. YSL Radiant Powder is a wonderful product and also comes in a compact version, in case a touch up is needed.

7. Waterproof mascara is a lifesaver, especially during those tender, tear-jerker moments. Inimitable Waterproof by Chanel is great because you can still get incredible volume, length and definition, but it will really stay throughout the day and evening.

8. Lips should look soft and kissable, so I prefer La Laque Fever Lip Shine by Lancôme. This pigmented gloss will stay on for hours and comes in a great variety of shades, so it’s suitable for any skin tone.

First up, something simple and easy to overlook in all the planning: a bride’s nails! Everyone’s been asking to see that ring already, but on the wedding day, it’s serious showtime. Our Flagship Spa Nordstrom manager, Constance McCarty, and her team of manicurists shared these tips and trends for wedding-worthy hands.

Constance recommends that the bride starts prepping nails one month ahead of time. Come in for a natural manicure, and then come back two weeks prior to the wedding to do a test run of any nail art or embellishment the bride would like for her wedding day; this can always be removed if she’d like to make it a surprise for the wedding. Lastly, the bride and her bridal party should visit once more 1 to 2 days prior to the event for final application.

Bling Finger. This is great for young brides, and the ornate designs complement an indoor church setting nicely. Jeweled, studded and textured nails add perfect drama to the look. When it comes the business of beauty, Candace Duong plays by her own rules. This Braintree, Massachusetts-based Beauty Stylist got her start in the industry as a part-time beauty consultant and quickly realized she preferred a makeup station to the office of her 9-5. On a mission to help women find the confidence they need to live and express themselves freely, Candace shares just why she set out to blaze her own trail in beauty.

What is the best beauty advice you were given growing up?
CANDACE DUONG: My best friend of 14 years, Mindi, has always encouraged me to be different, step outside of the box and do what makes me feel happy. She was the first to introduce me to hair coloring, tweezers, lip gloss and French manicures. Mindi went to school for fashion design and is a total fashionista; she is never scared to try something different. I totally look up to her when it comes to beauty and following your dreams.

Which element of your job do you most enjoy?
CANDACE: Being the GO-TO person! I love being able to educate others on products and show people my tips and tricks. It’s so rewarding to help women feel good from the inside out, whether that’s answering questions or telling a customer that their beauty routine is on point. Growing up, I never thought that I would be the person that people would ask for beauty advice, and it feels great to be considered an expert in my field.

What is the biggest beauty mistake you see women make?
CANDACE: Wearing too much makeup is never ok! Too many times, I have had to show a woman with a flawless face [that she doesn’t need] full coverage foundation. Makeup should enhance your natural beauty and not mask you. Plus, if you have amazing skin, you need to show it off!

When you are not at work, how do you like to spend your time?
CANDACE: I love to relax on my days off; I enjoy doing yoga in my living room and take my time drinking tea on my balcony. Wednesdays are my sleep-in days; I never get out of bed earlier than noon on a Wednesday. I believe my body and mind need the maximum hours of sleep at least one day a week to restore and rejuvenate.

What is your advice to aspiring beauty stylists?
CANDACE: Share your knowledge and learn from others! You’ll be surprised how much you can learn from one another when you’re willing to be open-minded and step outside of your comfort zone. And that’s not just with coworkers—I’ve learned so much from my stylish customers over the years!

It’s great for kids’ hair too, and makes comb-out time much less painful.

Spa time at home. Why deal with traffic when you can simply lie back in the tub with a good book, a glass of Washington wine and some Aveda Stress-fix Soaking Salts? With lavender and sage essences infusing mineral-rich salt and sugar, this total-body indulgence is my go-to remedy for relaxing and unwinding—especially after days spent hiking, camping, boating and playing on the beach. (Sometimes I need a staycation after my staycation…)

For shaving: Spread a thin layer on slightly moist skin. Shave. Rub residual oil into skin for deep penetrating moisture. Or, rinse oil off with warm water and a washcloth.
As a pre-shave oil: Spread a thin layer on slightly moist skin, allowing oil to penetrate beard growth for 10 seconds. Apply Beard Lube Conditioning Shave or Supreme Cream Shave Lather over oil. Shave. Rinse with warm water.
As a facial and skin moisturizer: Apply a thin layer to slightly moist skin following bath or shower. Perfect for rough patches on feet, elbows and cuticles.

With summer just around the corner, there is no better time to stock up on the best tips and tricks to get that gorgeous summer glow. Speaking as someone whose natural complexion is the color of skim milk: achieving that bronzed effect can be challenging.

Luckily, M·A·C’s Temperature Rising collection is replete with all the necessary bronzers, elixirs and bronzing oils. Bronzer, or “sun in a compact,” is a must-have for the spring and summer seasons. Having the right products is only part of this sun-kissed equation—proper placement is of the utmost importance. Here are some of my top tips for looking radiant and effortless this summer.

1. If you wear foundation daily, keep your shade choice true to your skin tone. It’s always a great idea to mix your foundation shades as the seasons change (no one’s complexion is all one single color, anyway). In my opinion, trying to achieve a bronze effect by using a darker foundation is a big no-no. Instead, keep your foundation true to form and then apply your bronzing powder.

If you have a very fair complexion, steer clear of bronzers that are too orange. Instead, use a peachy blush (try M·A·C Powder Blush in Ripe For Love), and then apply a more yellow or golden shade of bronzer (try M·A·C Nude on Board or Refined Golden Bronzing Powder).

On darker skin tones, try a deep peach blush for a fresh color accent (try M·A·C Peaches Powder Blush) and then a deeper, warmer shade of bronzer (try M·A·C Pro Longwear Bronzer in Sun Dipped).

2. Use a large powder brush and sweep the bronzer on the high planes of the face—tops of the cheekbones, creases of the eyes, bridge of the nose and tip of the chin. Bronzer shouldn’t be used to contour; it should add color and create a halo effect on the face.

3. For the ultimate summer skin, it’s important to add some highlight and shine. Create an effortless glow by tapping M·A·C Golden Elixir Strobe Cream into the tops of the cheekbones, under the brow bone and on the bridge of the nose.

4. Lastly, don’t forget to address all those “undressed” areas. M·A·C’s Bronzing Oil adds just a tint of lush bronze pigments and shine to all of your “exposed” areas. Try applying to your shoulders, collarbone and décolletage.

This month we connect with skincare guru Kate Somerville, who talks about female friendships, celebrity hang-ups, a preteen son, and being called ‘bitchy.’

BEAUTY 24/7: You seem like true cheerleader for women.
KATE SOMERVILLE: I’ve actually been thinking a lot about that lately. My mom was an alcoholic who left when I was 9, and what my business has given me, more than anything, is a lot of moms—that kind of feminine love and connection I didn’t have growing up. All of the women I treat, who really share their lives with me… yes, maybe I’m giving them the gift of youth, but they give me just as much. I have to remember where it all started: connecting with and helping other women.

You’re known for touching a lot of famous faces—you probably make all your clients feel like stars.
KATE: I think it goes both ways: I also make celebrities feel like they’re accepted for the people they are on the inside. If you knew some of them—they’re so like us, they just happen to be actors. They have the same kinds of struggles as we do: kids, husbands, weight loss, weight gain, illnesses—everything!

Many of your competitors are men (Drs. Gross, Perricone, Brandt)—is it hard being a woman, even in the beauty business?
KATE: Back when I first started out—I’ll never forget this–and I was going to be acquired by a big company, at our first meeting, they asked what my goal was. I told them I wanted to be in all markets—I want an infomercial, I want to be at Nordstrom, I want to be on QVC. The man sitting next to me—who’s a genius but who comes from the old school—patted me on the knee and said, “Oh, honey, that’s just not going to happen.” Well, I loved that, because when someone says to me, “You can’t,” I say, “Watch me.”

So in other words, hop on or hop out of the way?
KATE: Since the beginning, I’ve had a vision, and I’ve stuck with that vision. It’s interesting what happens as you grow—a lot of people I meet will say, “Oh, you’re so personable and friendly,” but my staff will tell you that I can get really bitchy. I understand now how people can get the reputation of being a diva, because when you have a vision and people try to change your vision, you’re like, no, sorry—I’m not going to move off of this. And at the end of the day, if the product isn’t great, we don’t get paid!

Your business just went global [Kate recently opened her first international clinic in South Korea]; how do you maintain that personal connection with your customers?
KATE: It’s something I’m constantly aware of—I really have to rely on my staff now. Obviously, things are still “born” from me, but we have a panel of women at the clinic who have been with me for eight years. They know the culture, and they know skin—probably even better than I do now!

But more importantly, I also have an 11-year-old son, who is the best part of my life. When he was younger and I was just starting out, my husband was great about being there as a parent, which I am so grateful for. But now, the older my son gets, the more I see how much he needs his mom too—and I need him, because he fills my heart more than anything. I’m trying to balance being with him more, plus staying connected to my clients and the business. It’s definitely a lot to juggle.

Being a busy working mother must help you understand your clients’ lives on a very personal level.
KATE: That’s why my products need to WORK—quickly! I’ve always been all about that: no nonsense, cut to the chase. That’s why my packaging is the way it is. If it’s not easy—something you can throw in a bag and go—then forget it. Plus, with the clinic, we get to try everything out on the clients, talk to them about the experience. If they don’t get it, if it’s not working for them, then we don’t release it. We’re literally right there at the point of impact. We’ve had so many flops, but we just keep tweaking until we get things right.

I also get that women don’t have time for downtime or delayed healing when their skin looks weird. That’s why my products are a mix of the optimum level of active ingredients balanced with botanicals like lavender oil, apricot, almond oil and aloe. Nordstrom makes it all accessible; it’s where I shop, where I go to get my designers, but it’s still young, hip and easy.

This year, it’s all about getting the perfect summer tan without the harmful sun damage. We consulted Beauty Stylist Cassi Coulter at Nordstrom Mission Viejo, and she shared her favorite products for looking perfectly sun-kissed—with no sun required.

Self Tanners

Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Tinted Self Tanning Gelée gives a heavenly tan as well as a soft bronze shimmer when applied. Its color starts to develop in under an hour.

Xen-Tan Mousse Intense is a great weekly self tanner for face and body that gives a more natural-looking olive undertone. It’s streak-free and oil-free, and it smells delicious.

Last but not least: Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel. One of the first self tanners to hit the market, this gel is quickly absorbed, and it’s beautiful on both the face and body.

Expert tip: be sure to exfoliate before any self tanning application, and always apply to well-dried skin.

Bronzers

Perfect your glow with Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder, one of my favorites—a little goes a long way. I use the ‘Golden Light’ shade for fair skin and the ‘Medium’ shade for warmer skin with cinnamon undertones.

Laura Mercier ‘Matte Radiance’ Baked Powder (in shade 03 or 04) is also a beautiful way to give the face, neck and décolletage a warm summer glow.

Expert Tip: You can also use bronzer to color-correct. If your face and neck are lighter than your body, you can even out your skin tone by applying bronzer with a large fluffy brush—like the Bobbi Brown Bronzer Brush—on your neck and all around the edges of your face (jawline, hairline and sides of face).

Katie Hughes, butter LONDON’s Global Color Ambassador, gives us a step-by-step guide on creating the cheetah-inspired nail art using colors in Sun Baker, Poole and Torch.

1. Prep by removing all oils from the nail. Do this by sweeping a cotton ball with acetone over the nail surface.
2. Use butter LONDON’s Nail Foundation for a base coat.
3. Apply one coat of the Nordstrom-exclusive color in Torch all over the nail.

4. Paint the tip of a makeup wedge with Sun Baker.

5. Lightly pat the wedge onto the tip of the nail for a subtle fade effect.
Tip: “This fade will work best if Torch is almost dry,” says Katie.

6. Once dry, use a dotting tool or bobby pin to draw little Cs or unfinished circles across the nail with Poole, adding a few stray dots for effect.

7. Let Poole dry, then finish with butter LONDON’s ‘Hardwear P.D. Quick’ Topcoat. And voilà, you’re done!

If you haven’t tried colored eyeliner, now is the time. Easily rock this look from the office to happy hour! Here are a few tips on how.

“When applying a striking colored eyeliner, make sure to keep the rest of your eye makeup simple (think mascara and soft shadow on top only) and try lining just the bottom waterline of your eye with the pencil. Mother’s Day always reminds me of what I learned from my mother. Through all the hardships of Russia―especially when the Iron Curtain was still up and women were not exposed to or given any access to things that were available to the rest of the free western world―the fact that she always wanted to fearlessly maintain her individuality and self-expression taught me a lot about staying true to myself and believing in what I do.
