Reporting from Chicago, our Michigan Avenue-based Beauty Stylist Iris Brostowicz breaks out the glitter to show you how to get the perfect holiday glow.
How can you subtly apply glittery eyeshadow?
IRIS BROSTOWICZ: There are a multitude of options to use glitter in a subtle manner that will add radiance to highlight a feature on the face, while also avoiding an over-the-top 2001: A Space Odyssey flashback. Keep in mind that the larger the glitter, the larger the flash of light, and the smaller the glitter, the more understated the look.
Subtlety at its best…
Apply your go-to palette of eyeshadows as you normally would, but add a contrasting touch of glitter directly at the lash line, above the iris, to attract light to the center of the eye. Try Bobbi Brown Sparkle Eyeshadow in Silver Lilac. An expert tip to make this appropriate 24/7 is: The width of the highlight should not exceed the width of the iris. Use an eyeshadow and/or an eyeliner like stila ‘sparkle’ waterproof liquid eyeliner that has glitter in it, and stick to shades of white, champagne and/or pearl to achieve a hint of highlight.
Are there certain shades of glitter that look better (i.e., bronze glitter vs. silver glitter)?
IRIS: Generally, for lighter skin tones, a soft inner-corner highlight in silver is perfect for brightening. For medium skin tones, try Napoleon Perdis Loose Eye Dust in Pink Champagne—it makes blue and green eyes vibrantly sparkle. Brown eyes have more flexibility, but if subtle is the look, stick to warm copper/bronze tones. The richest of skin tones should try a stronger contrast to the undertone of their skin to achieve definition or a deep monochromatic twist with glittery chocolate tones.
Is it safe to wear glitter eyeliner?
IRIS: There are so many options, from liquid to waterproof to cream. The biggest call-out is to ensure that the product is actually suggested/designed for ways in which you are using it.
Consider using a glitter liquid liner or sparkle liquid liner, which is great if you have contacts, as it stays in place and you don’t have to worry about excess flaking off.
When using shimmer or glitter on the inner rim of your eye, reach for a kohl pencil; these too are usually waterproof and/or long-wearing. My new obsession is Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Kôhl Liner in Cabana; the teal green pops against so many eye shades, and is the perfect unexpected complement to everyday browns and bronzes.
Is there a way to tastefully add glitter to your lip look?
IRIS: One of my favorite ways to jazz up an everyday beauty look is to use glitter lip gloss right in the center of your pout. Apply with your finger for a delicate twinkle, or all over for maximum shine. One to add to your lip wardrobe is M·A·C Dazzleglass Lipcolour—it adds dimension by mimicking the brilliance of quartz and opal crystal. If exceptional iridescent shine is what you want, this is a must!
When in doubt: Less is more with daytime glitter, go all out for nighttime and, above all, have some fun!
