Kate’s Take on 2014: 7 Trends & Tips to Try

Ring in a beautiful new year with a little help from our beauty trend editor, Kate Fannin. She’s sharing her favorite trends and tips for 2014.

1. Test-drive a “hybrid.”
I’m not referring to your vehicle, but 2014 will see many unique beauty formulations and multitaskers that define “bene-ficiency.” Until all these genius products arrive, try Shiseido Lacquer Rouge for a great “liquid lipstick” that combines the best qualities of a lipstick, a lacquer and a cushiony gloss while also adding moisture.

2. Go for the gold.
Choose your “glow focus” on nails, eyes or skin (not all at once). Find your metallic moment with one of these: Essie Nail Polish in ‘Good as Gold’, Smashbox Limitless Cream Eyeshadow in ‘Riches’ and NARS Illuminator in ‘Laguna.’

3. Look inside.
You’ll find new and “rediscovered” ingredients include hydrating hyaluronic acid (Kiehl’s Super Multi-Corrective Cream), brightening Vitamin C (Lancer Advanced C Radiance Cream) and immortelle flower to improve wrinkles and dark spots (L’Occitane Immortelle Divine Line—I’m especially loving the Immortelle Precious Cream!).

4. Give your hands (and nails) some TLC.
After all the nail trends we tried in 2013, our hands, nails and cuticles are grasping for moisture and good ole proper nail care. My recommendations: Aveda Hand Relief, Julep Oxygen Nail Treatment and EVE LOM Cuticle Cream.

5. Get cheeky.
Blush is back! Whether it’s a powder or cream (or a “hybrid”), a pretty flush is fresh again. Look to no-fail favorites like Bobbi Brown Shimmer Bricks or a new collection from NARS (launching only at Nordstrom later this month…stay tuned!).

6. Change your (opinion of) oil.
With the popularity of face oils, let’s not forget about the rest of the body. I’m obsessed with Jo Malone’s Dry Body Oil in Dark Amber & Ginger Lily—use it just out of the shower for the perfect amount of lingering scent that also moisturizes. And if you want to strut into 2014 with gorgeous, smooth legs, pair Clarins Tonic Body Treatment Oil with their ‘Body Lift’ Cellulite Control, and you’ll thank me.

7. Catch some Zs.
We can all use more sleep, and with the influx of new sleep masks, you can literally improve your skin with your eyes closed. Try La Prairie’s ‘Skin Caviar’ Luxe Sleep Mask for a truly dreamy indulgence.

And that’s my take…for a beautiful 2014!
