With the ever-expanding maze of options in the foundation field (BBs and CCs and minerals, oh my!), it’s no wonder many of us feel fuzzy about choosing the right coverage. That’s why this month our Nordstrom beauty team is focused on covering all the bases, with a quick-ref foundation guide to what works for each face. It’s a cover story worth checking out.
Along with coverage, finding the perfect shade can leave us in the dark as well. We talked to Beauty Stylist Shanilton Jackson (at Nordstrom Galleria at Tyler in Riverside, CA), who gave us three bright ideas:
1. Look at the skin on the underside of your wrist to determine your undertone (cool vs. warm).
2. Choose a foundation color with the same undertone.
3. Make sure your shade also works with your chest area so you have a seamless match.

Transform into the queen of Halloween beauty by reviving the allure of Marie Antoinette. Pamper yourself the French royal way, with makeup tips from Nordstrom Beauty Stylist, Alexander Ross.
Signature Look – Flawless Porcelain Skin
Start by cleansing and moisturizing the skin. “Create a flawless face by concealing any dark spots and under eye shadows,” says Ross, who is based out of the Nordstrom Durham, North Carolina store. “Try Estée Lauder Smoothing Creme Concealer in Smooth Ivory and apply around the inner corners of the eye, near the nose, and under the eye area.”
Break out the makeup brushes this Halloween and create an Old Hollywood beauty statement that pays homage to the original “blonde bombshell,” Jean Harlow.
Nordstrom South Coast Plaza Beauty Stylist Elyse Reneau says, “It’s all about the sultry eye.” Try using natural colors to effortlessly contour your eye shape. Reneau is a fan of CHANEL Les 4 Ombres Rives Eyeshadow Palette, a Nordstrom-exclusive item. These smudge-proof shadows can be applied dry for subtle shading or dampened for more vivid color. “Give both your top and bottom lash lines extra depth by layering a liquid liner over your everyday pencil to really create that come-hither stare,” says Reneau. Invest in the stila ‘all about eyes’ set, which includes everything you need—waterproof liquid liner, highly pigmented eyeliner and long-lasting mascara—to create extra eye drama.
While we’re on the subject of Daria Strokous, let’s take a few minutes to frolic with her through Versailles in head-to-toe Dior. Consider this your daily dose of glamour: “Secret Garden – Versailles,” Dior’s new film directed by Inez & Vinoodh.
We’re a little distracted daydreaming about regal French châteaux and running through a luxurious parterre with Depeche Mode in our ears. Rather than fantasize about it, we’ll be doing a little shopping to recreate the gorgeous look of Strokous’s doe-eyed close-ups. Here’s what’s on our list: dove-grey nail lacquer, a smoked-out cat-eye, thick black lashes and liner all finished with a simple nude lip.
The time is right for brash swaths of color, from pretty pouts to neon nails. Here are four tips for getting a look no one will outshine.
1 – Lip Service. Swipe on a little long-lasting wow. Start with a deep, rich lip color and top with a shimmering coat of gloss. [Pictured: M·A·C Lipstick, M·A·C Dazzleglass Lipcolour]
2 – Lash Out. Want your eyes to look brighter and more wide-open? Who doesn’t? Apply a deep black on your top lashes and layer a subtle brown on your lower lashes. Hello, doe eyes. [Pictured: Estée Lauder Sumptuous Two Tone Eye-Opening Mascara]
3 – Scents of Humor. Feminine, happy and perfectly sweet, a delicious fragrance is just one more way to show off your colorful side. [Pictured: Prada Candy Eau de Parfum Spray]
4 – French Mani Gone Wild. Sure, you can wear one of these pop colors alone, but try going bolder: paint your first coat in one shade then just your tips (or moons) in another. Mais oui! [Pictured: Deborah Lippmann Run the World (Girls) Neon Mini Nail Lacquer Set]
Revitalize your beauty routine and your skin in just four easy (we promise!) steps.
1 – Cleanse. We love high-tech beauty tools because they not only work to gently exfoliate and refresh skin, but also prep your face to better absorb moisturizers and serums.
Tip: Use the Clarisonic ‘Mia’ on neck and décolleté to achieve smoother skin—and overall radiance. Use it on the back of the hands to keep them looking youthful, too.
2 – Exfoliate. Get radiant in minutes. Uncover your true skin with a peel that brightens and reduces the appearance of fine lines.
3 – Treat. Don’t deny your skin the daily vitamins it needs. Serums reach below the surface to instantly infuse the skin with added nutrients.
Tip: Find a serum that’s right for you and use it daily for optimal results. The new Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution will even your skin tone for a healthy and refreshed glow.
4 – Soothe & Protect. Moisturizer helps foundation go on evenly and last longer, while sunscreen protects the skin from future damage and ensures optimal results from your serum.
