M·A·C Senior Artist Louise Zizzo’s Step-by-Step Guide to Transforming into an Archie Girl

Are you a Betty or a Veronica? Our guest blogger M·A·C Senior Artist Louise Zizzo shows you how to create the girl-next-door look that will have you looking like a modern-day Betty. If channeling your blonde ambitions is not your thing, don’t fret. Zizzo also whips up a vivacious look that only a Veronica could pull off. After these tips, whoever the Archie is in your life, you’ll have his head spinning with one hot makeup statement.

“To create the innocent sexiness of Betty…

Start with the eyes:
1. Using the Caramel Sundae Eye Shadow Palette, sweep Dreammaker Eye Shadow over the eyelid with a small flat brush (#239).
2. Blend Caramel Sundae Eye Shadow through the crease with a small buffing brush (#219) to create depth.
3. Using a small angled brush (#266), apply Showstopper Eye Shadow along the top and bottom lash line, keeping very close to the lash line to avoid thick, heavy liner.
4. Apply a coat of mascara (Extended Play Lash) to your top and bottom lashes.
5. To create the drawn-on lash look, rub Lord it Up Pearlglide Intense Eye Liner onto the back of your hand and dip a small angled brush (#266) into the color. Using small, precise strokes, draw lashes on to the outside edge of the eyelid, starting at the lash line, and then along the bottom lash line from corner to corner (think ’60s drawn-on lashes).

TIP: When using brushes to line the eyes, keep a crisp look by running the brush through your thumb and forefinger each time before you dip into the shadow. This will stop the brush from fanning out.

On the cheeks:
1. Apply Pink Swoon Sheertone Powder Blush with a soft blush brush (#168), starting on the apples of the cheeks and blending back toward the hairline. To create beautiful sheen, sweep Cheryl Chic Eye Shadow from the Caramel Sundae Eye Shadow Palette over the blush.

Finish the look with the lips:
1. Outline the lip, shading in slightly with In Anticipation Pro Longwear Lip Pencil.
2. Fill in the lip using a lip brush (#316) with Girl Next Door lipstick, and top it off with Stay Sweet Lip Gloss.

To create the flirty, seductive look of Veronica…

On the eyes:
1. Using the Spoiled Rich Eye Shadow Palette, brush Spoiled Rich Eye Shadow through the crease area with a small pencil brush (#219), keeping it quite intense and tapering up slightly toward the outer edge of the eye. Do not blend out.
2. Rub Designer Purple Pearlglide Intense Eye Liner onto the back of your hand. Use a small angled brush (#266) to dip into the color and line the top lash line, tapering up and out at the edge of the eye. Do the same on the bottom lash line, starting on the inner corner and then joining up to the top liner at the outer edge of the eye.
3. Dip the same angled brush (#266) into Ron Ron Run and Gravel Eye Shadow and press over the top and bottom liner to create depth and intensity.
4. Line the inside of the eye with Smolder Eye Kohl.
5. Apply a thick coat of mascara (Extended Play Lash) to top and bottom lashes.
6. Apply #36 lashes to the top lash line for added intensity.

Then for the cheeks:
1. With a soft blush brush (#168), lightly apply Prom Princess Powder Blush, starting on the apple of the cheek and blending back toward the hairline.
2. Dust Veronica’s Blush Pearlmatte Face Powder to the apple of the cheek in a circular buffing motion to create a very blended, barely-there look to the cheek.

TIP: When using deeper or more intense blush colors, swirl some face powder onto the blush brush first before dipping into the color. This will help control and diffuse the intensity and ensure an even application.

Complete the look with the lips:
1. Outline the lip with Cherry Lip Pencil and shade in slightly.
2. With lip brush (#316), fill in lips with Ronnie Red Lipstick and add Strawberry Malt Lipglass to finish.

TIP: To ensure symmetry with lips, especially when applying dark or bright colors: After lining, tilt head back slightly while looking in the mirror to see if the bottom lip line is even. To see if the top lip is even, tilt head slightly down while still looking in the mirror.

From sultry lipsticks to alluring fragrances, each month we’ll be bringing you the best of what’s new in beauty. Beauty Stylist Allyson White, from our Walnut Creek store #421, gives us the inside scoop on her five most-wanted items.

• See by Chloé: “Meet my new favorite fragrance of the season! It’s fresh with notes of apple, yet subtly sexy with a hint of vanilla and musk. It’s the perfect everyday fragrance. This scent comes in a body lotion as well as a perfume spray. I like to layer the two for all-day lasting power.”

• Trish McEvoy Beauty Balm: “Who doesn’t love a multitasking product? Anything to save me a little time in the morning! This all-in-one skin-perfecter does the task of five products in one. It brightens, hydrates, primes, evens and controls oil with a sheer coverage. It can be worn alone or under foundation. Try using the Trish deluxe blending brush when applying to get a flawless airbrushed look.”

• Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Shine Lip Color: “I love this new product! It’s a beautiful, smooth, sheer wash of color with 8 hours of hydration. It’s the perfect way to introduce spring’s pop of color into your makeup wardrobe. Apply alone for a sheer look or use a YSL lip liner in a coordinating color to achieve a more defined lip.”

• Perricone MD Blue Plasma: “This multitasking nonacidic daily peel is gentle enough for the most sensitive of skins. It has blue copper to soothe and repair while also reducing the look of large pores, lines and wrinkles. Antioxidants brighten the skin and give you that youthful glow. Be sure to use on freshly cleansed skin, day or night, followed by your favorite moisturizer.”

• Juicy Couture La La: “This scent represents everything Juicy. It’s girly, carefree, fresh, trendy, and PINK! Don’t forget to pick up the purse-size roller ball as well, so you can re-apply when you’re on the go!”

Nordstrom’s Debra Redmond Talks 2013 Beauty Resolutions

From our National Beauty Director, Debra Redmond:

“Hello 2013! I honestly can’t believe how quickly this past year went by, but it feels like I say that every year. 2012 was a year of big changes for me, personally, professionally, environmentally and seasonally. I moved states, from Texas to Washington, and I don’t think there is anything that can quite prepare you for moving from one coast to another (yes, Texas has a coast). But all in all this whirlwind of a year has left me reflecting on past resolutions―both broken and kept―and it’s compelled me to put pen to paper and map out my key beauty solutions that I intend to keep!

2013 Beauty Resolution Mantra: Radiant, flawless, glowing equals pretty!

1. Create a fragrance wardrobe. Fragrances: They stir up emotion, and can complete your look by making you feel sexy, flirty or feminine…and we all know that a big part of looking good is feeling good. When creating your fragrance wardrobe, think of scents that make you feel good for everyday, and then intensify these aromas for nighttime (going lighter for day). Keep in mind that smell is the strongest memory enhancer of the senses, so in 2013, be memorable! A fresh new scent that I’ll be adding to my wardrobe? The new Jimmy Choo Flash (available March 15).

2. Play more with makeup. With my kids, I always tell them to try different foods. They will never know if they like it or not unless they try it! Taking my own advice as it pertains to makeup, I am committing to going to a (free!) Beauty Stylist to experiment with my look, colors and comfort level every 3 months. I just had this done a month ago, and not only got re-acquainted with some pastime faves, but also fell in love with new products.

3. Remove my makeup EVERY night. MAC makes it so easy with their cleansing wipes…NO MORE EXCUSES!

4. Not too thick, not too thin. I promise to use my Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Stencils whenever I pick up my tweezers.

5. Commit to hair care. I resolve to be a part of the solution and quit complaining about the texture of my hair—or that it’s dull and dry—and actually use my Living proof® ‘Restore’ Mask Treatment for Dry or Damaged Hair weekly.

6. Wear sunscreen daily! It AMAZES me to no avail that I do not take better care of my skin. It’s the largest organ, but yet I pay the least attention to it…so whether it’s in my foundation, or in my primer or my moisturizer- I will be wearing SPF all over! Time saver tip: Keep it easy and use an all-in-one like Shiseido Refreshing Sun Protection Spray, which can be used on the body and in your hair.

7. Improve the state of my tools! Brushes beware: I am now armed with Laura Mercier Brush Cleanser and it’s easy enough to use daily!

8. Nourish my nails. Nail color is the easiest interchangeable trend this season, which means they have to be in great shape; therefore I resolve to take my PHYTO ‘Phytophanère’ Dietary Supplement for Hair & Nails and promise to not pick, peel, over-file or nibble.

Whew! The list is long and the commitment hard, but the payoffs will be worth it!

Kulig’s ‘LOVE ME’ trademark is featured on the all products. Every aspect of the collection is reflective of his art. The lipstick is an exact pantone match to his signature red and the eyeliner looks like the paint pen he draws with.

Create the look of love with these simple steps.

1. Start with Photo Finish Foundation Primer.
2. Apply Studio Skin Hydrating Foundation (15 Hour Wear).
3. Use Photo Finish Lid Primer, which allows your shadow to stay put for up to 8 hours!
4. Using ‘LOVE ME’ Eye Shadow Palette in Entice Me – Apply SHADE 4 (color inside the heart) from inner corner to center of lid.
5. Pat SHADE 2 (top left) from center to outer corner.
6. Blend SHADE 3 (bottom shade) into inner corner.
7. Tightly line upper lashline with SHADE 5 (darkest shade) winging out at outer corner.
8. Apply ‘LOVE ME’ Paint Pen Eye Liner for depth.
9. Blend SHADE 5 over it to diffuse.
10. Finish eyes with Full Exposure Mascara.
11. Swirl on ‘LOVE ME’ Blush.
12. For a pop of color apply ‘LOVE ME’ Lipstick in LOVE ME.
13. Add a hint of shine with ‘LOVE ME’ Lip Gloss in Adore Me.
