All Braided Up

My absolute favorite hair trend for summer is braids. Braids everywhere. They add texture and interest to any and every hairstyle you could possibly think of. And they look especially cool hidden in unexpected places:

It’s wedding week at Nordstrom, and even us BP. bloggers are chiming in. Now, obviously I don’t have that much first-hand experience with bridal fashion, but I have been to my fair share of weddings as a guest. I am assuming most of you readers have, too. Typically, June is the favored month for weddings, so I have compiled some wedding-guest inspiration perfect for beating the heat and making a great impression.

My go-to wedding guest trends are florals and pastels. I love them because they are playful, youthful and effortlessly pretty. For the floral outfit, I chose a cute, muted floral peplum dress because there are so many different colors in the print to work with. I kept the shoe neutral to lengthen the leg, and then I accessorized using colors in the print: gold, white and mint.

  3. 3. Seychelles “Down to the Wire” Sandal
  4. 4. BB Dakota “Palm Beach” Print Peplum Dress
  5. 5. Rachel Large Hoop Earrings
  6. 6. Carole Mother-of-Pearl Bangles

BP. has a ton of beautiful pastel dresses, and I chose this Fire dress because I love the back cut-out. Mint is an easy color to complement—pinks, purples and metallics all look great with it. Simple gold accents dress this outfit up without going overboard.

Since days are longer in the summer, wedding guest outfits tend to be less formal than, say, an evening wedding. However, you should always check the invitation for attire guidelines. Here is an easy etiquette decoder taken from etiquette guru Emily Post via Martha Stewart Weddings:

  • • White Tie:  For female guests, a formal floor-length evening gown is the right choice.
  • • Black Tie: You can go a bit dressier and wear a formal floor-length gown, or choose a short, dressy cocktail dress.
  • • Black Tie Optional:  There’s a bit more freedom here. Dressy seperates and Little Black Dresses are also allowed.
  • • Semiformal: Think cocktail dresses or a nice skirt.
  • • Casual: Common for outdoor weddings, casualwear includes sundresses and sandals. (Both of my styled looks would be considered casual, possibly semiformal.)

Finally, while white is not technically off-limits to wedding guests, I’d stay away from it. Let the bride stand out on her special day.

For the past couple of years, it’s been a dream of mine to become a Regional Merchandiser (RM) for Nordstrom. The RM visits all the stores in her region—a region covers several states—and helps the staff in each store make their department the best it can be in every way, from sales to displays to in-store events. So you can understand my excitement when I got to interview the RM who supports my store.

Nicole rocking some Starbucks and looking totally on trend

Let’s talk work:

Nicole is responsible for all the stores from New Jersey to North Carolina (my home state). Specifically, she talks to and builds relationships with the managers of the different stores, teaching them selling and coaching techniques. She also meets with them about planning and achieving their goals.

Her favorite cities to visit are Charlotte, North Carolina, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She enjoys the warm weather in Charlotte, as well as the friendly people who live there. According to her, “Walking down the street, everyone smiles and says hello.” I guess it’s just that good old Southern charm! Nicole really likes Philadelphia and the Philly customer because she is very similar to the “New York girl,” who’s trendy and takes risks in the way she dresses.

Nicole’s favorite thing about the position is seeing people get promoted. Because she meets closely with the managers, she gets to watch them fulfill their goals. She also gets to travel, meet lots of different people and see trends all the time.

The hardest thing about being a regional merchandiser, Nicole says, is gearing merchandise toward the different customers up and down the coast. For instance, the “Charlotte girl” is different from the lady who lives in Washington, D.C. Because she approaches her job store by store, it can be difficult at times to pinpoint what each woman wants.

Nicole’s advice for someone who wants to be a regional merchandiser? Always be open to feedback. According to her, there are always opportunities within the company to grow and improve. Keep an open mind and ask tons of questions!

Although she loves her current position, she hopes to one day be in the buying office as an accessories or dress buyer.* Good luck, Nicole!

Let’s talk fashion:

When I asked Nicole how she defines her personal style, she simply said: “All over the place.” She can wear the “girliest pink dress you’ve ever seen” one day, and she will wear a boho cut-out top the next. Her style really depends on her mood when she wakes up the next morning.

Her wardrobe staple? Anything and everything chambray. In her own words, “It can go with anything you could possibly ever own.” It’s become a definite go-to item in her closet.

I had so much fun meeting and interviewing Nicole. Because she travels from store to store, maybe you can meet her, too!

Stay beautiful,
Samantha

Friday Dance Party

Happy Friday! Today’s dance party jam comes from Kassie, the woman behind the curtain for our Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest pages. It’s easy to see why she loves YouTube sensation Con Bro Chill. Four cute guys from Portland making epic, silly dance music? Yes, please.

Shout-out to the graduating class of 2013! Your big day is approaching. Of course, you’ll have your cap and gown on during graduation, but for celebrations afterward, a pretty new dress is in order. A graduation dress should be two things:

1. Comfortable. You’ll be sitting for a long time, maybe even outside.
2. Crush-worthy. Special day = special dress.

These are my top picks:

I have a huge weakness for shoes. Every summer I splurge on sandals. However, this year I’ve decided to limit myself to three new pairs. It’s going to be a test of will power, but hopefully good for my bank account. Since I have limited myself to only three, I made sure that they’ll cover every occassion: pool, grad party, amusement parks, vacation and everything in between.

1. Low-Heeled Sandals
Sam Edelman Trina sandal

These Sam Edelman sandals are great. I bought them not too long ago, actually. The straps come in different colors and patterns, and the metallic heel keeps them right on trend.  Additionally, they are super comfy and versatile. For example, I’ve worn them with maxi dresses and with shorts. Typically, higher heels have felt more fashionable to me, but spring runway collections showed lots of flat sandals. Their practicality and good looks make them my number one must-have for the summer.

2. Natural-Fiber Wedges
Steve-madden-marrvil-wedge-shoes-nordstrom

I don’t personally have these Steve Madden espadrilles. However, I did wear them for my BP. Fashion Board’s fashion show and I loved them. While tall, they are remarkably stable, and the ankle straps don’t pinch at all. Natrual fibers are a big trend this year, so the woven wedge is great for the summer. While these wedges might typically be a bit more dressy (perfect for a graduation), they would also look good with white jeans or shorts. And they have a lot of decorative details, so they balance out the minimalist flat sandals above.

3. Classic Flip-Flops
hero

I usually don’t like wearing flip-flops because I think they are pretty sloppy. However, I do think they are a summer necessity, especially for lounging by the pool. I gravitate towards flip-flops with bright colors or unique embellishments because they seem more sophsticated. These DV by Dolce Vita Sandals are cute and functional—and they’re exclusive to Nordstrom. The bright colors complement almost all swimsuits, as well as casual shorts and skirts. They round out my three must-have sandals for this summer.

1. She’s crazy smart.

After getting her Ph.D. in political science, Miuccia Prada got involved in her family’s business (making luxury leather bags) and convinced them to make a nylon backpack that became a must-have among the fashion set back in 1989. Fast-forward 25 years: She’s personally worth $12.4 billion (according to Forbes) and was ranked as the #67 most powerful woman in the world in 2012.

I want to make clothes that are beautiful, of course, but also clothes that are interesting and considered and intelligent and not out of place.

2. She’s a revolutionary.

She constantly pushes our idea of what’s possible, but instead of languishing in a rarefied, avant-garde ghetto, her boundary-pushing designs actually sell. A lot.

Fashion fosters cliches of beauty, but I want to tear them apart.

Prada and James Jean collaboration

3. She’s a feminist who believes “strong” and “beautiful” are not mutually exclusive concepts.

I always loved aesthetics. Not particularly fashion, but an idea of beauty.

Prada Resort Collection 2013

4. She’s inspiring.

The Devil wears her clothes, visual artists create full-scale art installations in the Texas desert as tribute to her, recording artists sing about her.

Everybody knows that I don’t have a muse. I’m not interested in that.

5. She designed the costumes for The Great Gatsby.

‘Nuff said. (Check out Brittany’s excellent post to see costume sketches, thoughts on the movie and ways to rock your own Gatsby style.)

This summer, I have my eyes on nothing but jumpsuits. Whether they’re long or short, I think they are a must-have for your wardrobe. I’m so excited because I just ordered the Topshop Floral Grid Print Romper! I absolutely cannot wait until I recieve it.

Hero

I love this romper because it has such a lovely print for summer and because it’s a step away from traditional denim overalls. If you’re not too keen on all-out overalls, these could be a perfect way to test the waters.

I’m planning on wearing it with a black crop top and a pair of round sunnies (only $12!).

Stay obsessed,
Samantha

If you’re the kind of person who keeps an archive of your favorite fashion magazines, I’m sure you have some fashion books in your library as well. I know I do! Here are my top picks:

1. The Little Dictionary of Fashion by Christian Dior

hero

It’s exactly what it sounds like and so much more: a collection of the definitions of fashion terminology.

2. The Teen Vogue Handbook: An Insider’s Guide to Careers in Fashion by the editors of Teen Vogue.

Teen-vogue-handbook

As a current soon-to-be-college-bound junior, this book is becoming more and more important to me. It gives excellent advice and tools for anyone interested in working in the fashion industry.

3. I Love Your Style: How to Define and Refine Your Personal Style by Amanda Brooks

I-heart-your-style

Who doesn’t love to decipher her own personal style, and who doesn’t love Diane von Furstenberg? No one! That’s who.

Free Song!

Happy Monday, everyone! We’re giving away a free song every Monday for the entire month of June to celebrate the beginning of summer. Why? Because we can.

If you’re a Cali girl (shout-out to Aya) or you dream of being one some day, today’s featured band is for you. Their jangly, feel-good surf pop is perfect for cruising with the top down or kicking back at the beach. Frontwoman Bethany Cosentino started writing songs when she was 15, and her partner in crime, Bobb Bruno, backs her up on bass, keyboards and backing vocals. As Cosentino told the Guardian UK, “When I was in New York I would walk to the train in the morning through the snow listening to Brian Wilson sing about California, and it made me happy. So I decided that I wanted to make music that reflected that happiness. I wanted to tell the world how obsessed I am with California.”

In fact, this band is so in love with California that they call themselves Best Coast, and their logo is a picture of a bear hugging the state map.

But don’t take our word for it. Watch the video and see for yourself.

Right-click to download “The Only Place” for your very own. And don’t forget to check back next Monday for the next free song download.
