Looks for Party Season

Ah, December, the party season! Decorative hors d’oeuvres, Beyonce playlists, slipping on ice and falling on sidewalks, it’s truly the pinnacle time of year. However, all of these various parties and occasions call for a variety of appropriate looks, three of which I’ve catalogued here for you.

Wearing all black can work in any situation. I grabbed my black bomberblack tee and tweed skirt for this late-night party look, versatile enough for an unexpected change of venue.

Wear this look if: the party is unorganized and plans are up in the air, and you want to make a mysterious impression. Or if you don’t love the hostess and want to act all underwhelmed and Effy Stonem.*

This winter coat is light enough to wear inside, but will definitely keep you warm outside. And it’s intricate enough that you don’t need to accessorize.

Wear this look if: you’re going to a dinner party with the ‘rents (it’s quite sophisticated) or you’re having a cozy movie night in with some pals. Speaking of which, can we all talk about how excited we are for The Sound of Music LIVE!? I will be holding the sing-along party of the millennium.

Bright orange isn’t usually my hue of choice, but everyone can benefit from a mid-winter pop of color! This dress is super comfortable and expressive, except kind of annoying to wear because people keep being like, “Scarlet Johansson is here?! Oh wait… sorry.”

Wear this look if: you’re going to a New Year’s extravaganza, birthday party, or fancy dinner.

Have fun on your party circuit and Godspeed!

Stay golden,

*[EDITOR’S NOTE: Hi, friends! Some of you have taken exception to Lily’s use of a popular term used by Rookie Mag’s Tavi Gevinson (the curious can see a full explanation on Jimmy Fallon), so we’ve pulled it from her post. Thanks for speaking up and letting us know how you feel—we always love hearing from you.]

Uhhh.. Bitchface? Is that really okay to say on a professional blog?

Awesome post! Love the reference to bitchface. I used to link to better educate my self of this necessary accessory. Stay honest girly

Hi, Annie – It’s a reference to a feature on Rookie Mag. We don’t generally condone swearing here at BP., but we made an exception for Lily’s post because she was pointing to a popular internet meme. We won’t make a habit of it!

    Thanks Ay_itz_meh47!
Annie- Amy said exactly what I meant to be referencing, which has become kind of a fad amongst teenage girls. I’m sorry if I offended you in any way!

Nevermind the actual language, I just think it’s weird to be promoting such a negative attitude.

Nicole, we clearly underestimated how many of our readers are familiar with Tavi’s original post and its subsequent popularity in certain circles. We’ve edited Lily’s reference to reflect the tone our BP. girls expect and enjoy. Thanks for chiming in, we love hearing from you.

Hi Nicole- I just want to let you know that I totally get what you’re saying. I didn’t mean to be displaying a negative attitude, the original reference itself is mocking the negativity teenage girls sometimes show towards each other. Thanks for commenting, I’ll try to explain myself better in future posts!
