We Wear Uniforms: We Are Not Uniform

Uniforms are becoming more and more popular in schools. I go to a school where we all have to wear a green plaid kilt. Some might argue that uniforms take away your individuality, but I like them. It makes getting ready for school a lot easier, and there are so many ways to personalize your uniform in order to show your personality.

Here are some quick tips to make a uniform feel less…uniform:

1. Opt for a unique blouse instead of the traditional polo. Look for embellished collars, ruffles or interesting seaming. If you are less preppy or girly, then you might want to try a chambray shirt–they’re casual but stylish.

2. Adding a sweater or blazer is a good way to stay warm during the winter without donning a shapeless sweatshirt (although those are nice sometimes, too).  I love the look of a thick pullover sweater paired with the pleated skirt.

3. Socks and tights are a fun way to express your creativity.  You could channel Blair Waldorf with bright opaque tights or go for over-the-knee socks.

4. Finally, personalize your school style with a fun pair of shoes. Ballet flats are the preferred choice of the girls at my school. But I love some of the printed Vans, TOMS or Converse that I see in the halls. Try to keep the heel low—the last thing you want is to trip on your way to chem class.

So, if you are required to wear a uniform, try mixing it up a bit. Just remember to stay within your school’s guidelines; thinking outside the box is great, but stomping on said box is probably not so good. A couple of Gossip Girl episodes and some creative thinking can turn your boring uniform into a true fashion statement…kilt included.

If I personalize my uniform I get a detention.

A detention! Uh oh. Are there any rules about backpacks? There are tons of bags in funky colors, prints, textures out there. I think you could use them to display your personal style.
