How would you describe your label, and who is the woman you envision while designing your collections?
We make clothes for modern, sophisticated, confident women. Clothes should not mask or overwhelm a woman’s personality or natural beauty.
Why did you become a fashion designer?
I began in fashion by opening a shop with collection pieces I created for the disco crowd, and, soon after, I opened one of the first shops on Madison Avenue with beautiful suits and dresses for working women. That is when I started using my name on the label, and the business took off from there.
How has your vision/philosophy changed since you started your company in 1972? Or how has it remained the same?
My vision has always been that clothing should be quieter than the woman, so that her true beauty can shine through.
What was the inspiration for your fall 2011 collection that we just saw at Fashion Week?
Lots of Ls: L for love, luxe, luscious, layering, leather, lace, leopard, and longer lengths.
What is the most important thing readers should know about you and your label?
I have found that one of the key factors to my success is that I listen to my customer. As the brand continues to evolve and grow, I always try and find new and innovative ways to give my customer what she wants.540
