Fashion Week: Our Beauty Trend Editor’s Essentials and Survival Tips

You know those amazing shows with the A-list models, front-row celebs and influencers clutching fancy swag bags while watching beautiful clothes being paraded down the runway? That public face of Fashion Week is one our beauty trend editor Kate Fannin rarely sees. No, she’s in the frenzy backstage, where all the real action is—ducking between clouds of hairspray and noting each flourish of the makeup artists’ brushes—all to see firsthand the freshest trends and hottest products for seasons to come.

Before she sets out for a week in the thick of it, she shares her pro tips on surviving the madness, who she’s excited to see and the little things that make it all worthwhile—and we’re taking note!

Must-haves: No matter the weather, sunscreen is nonnegotiable, as is lip balm, a good moisturizer, a fun-colored eyeliner and hand cream. I also heavy-up on zinc tablets and Emergen-C packets–indoors, outdoors, cabs and handshaking mean constant germ-fighting.

Diane Kendal for M•AC at Carolina Herrera.

Trend-watching: The best part about backstage is you never know what you’ll see in beauty. Pastels in winter, adorned eyebrows, lipstick as eyeshadow–it’s all fair game, and seeing the real artists at work is truly inspiring.

Me, Jin Soon Choi and Katie Jane Hughes.

People I’m excited to see: I ALWAYS look forward to seeing the manicurists backstage; they’re so fun and love talking about their inspiration and how it ties back to the designers’ vision. Katie Hughes (from butter London) and I also catch up on our latest foodie findings (including a doughnut cheeseburger at Hunger in Seattle; it’s a must).

Karlie Kloss. Derek Lam and me.

And it’s a special treat to see and meet high-fashion models (Karlie Kloss is gorgeous and truly kind) and fashion designers. Last year, I just happened to catch Derek Lam in a rare moment by himself, and he couldn’t have been more gracious (and photogenic!).

How I survive the week: Since I’m always in head-to-toe black (keeps me stealthy backstage), my “flair” is my hair. I change the color every season, so this time it’s blonde infused with pink (aka “rose gold”), and I tend to change my hairstyle daily…that’s why my suitcase is packed with multiple hats and a LOT of bobby pins!
