A+ Plus Style Advice from Model Candice Huffine

Self-proclaimed Nordstrom fan and plus-size model Candice Huffine has cultivated a unique sense of fashion that comes with working 15 years in the business. The New York model’s recent work includes the ‘Flowers for Ferdinando’ editorial for CR Fashion book, photographed by Tom Ford and styled by Carine Roitfeld, along with a portrait and interview in the April 2014 issue of Vogue magazine. She’s also graced the pages of W and Vogue Italia, and she’s shot campaigns for Marina Rinaldi, Lane Bryant, Maidenform, Marks & Spencer and Addition Elle, just to name a few. We got the chance to pick her brain about her favorite trends, celebrity wardrobe envy and taking the size out of style.

On her wardrobe strategy: “It’s all about having fun. I love breaking the rules, being loud and playing with different trends—anything from grunge to preppy. My fashion mantra: just commit.”

On the blessing and curse of the color black: “I don’t like to cover myself in a sea of black because it seems like such a 1999 mentality for curvy women. But I’d be lying if I said the color didn’t show up in some of my key pieces… it’s a chic color… and I live in NYC. ‘Nuff said.”

On her spring inspiration: “I’m totally embracing print on print. Sometimes I wear the same print together and sometimes I mix and match—it’s surprisingly flattering. I wore a wild blue, black and cream DVF pantsuit to an event recently and was completely sold on it. I’m also excited to wear crop tops this spring. Paired with a high-waisted pant, you get just the right peekaboo of skin.”

On her three desert island beauty products: “Weleda Skin Food moisturizer, an eyelash curler and Chloé perfume.”

On her favorite item purchased from Nordy’s: “I love my new Stella McCartney ‘Falabella’ chain link tote. I call it my ‘big girl bag’ because I decided to treat myself. I’m also obsessed with a Leith tee I got last summer—I had never heard of the brand until Nordstrom, and now I immediately search for their stuff when I shop online. And I snagged the hashtag/ampersand loafers by Chatelles during the French Fling Pop-In shop, and I adore them. Wait, was I only supposed to pick one thing?”

On celebrity style: “I really admire Olivia Palermo, Alexa Chung and Leandra Medine. Everything they wear may not work for my body type, but I take a lot of inspiration from their looks. They inspire me to dig deep into my closet and put things together in a way I would have never planned… and it keeps me out of a rut.”

On the movie title that best describes her life:It’s a Wonderful Life.”

Indeed it is, Candice. Keep up with our fave of the moment model on Instagram @CandiceHuffine.
