Real Weddings: Jodi & Daren
The sweet story behind Jodi and Daren’s Hawaiian-inspired wedding in Seattle, and the beginning of their new family!
The Story: Daren and I first met when we were 14 years old. We were together through high school, but Daren left to play baseball at an out-of-state college, and I remained at a college in Seattle. After all these years, I believe it took “the journey of life” to bring us back together.
Daren and I have two children each from our previous marriages; Dylan & Kylie and Kellen & Maddox. In the words of Daren’s best friend who officiated the ceremony, “one + one = six!”
The Scene: July 28th, 2013, Rosehill Community Center in Mukilteo, WA
The Rosehill Community Center was the only reception site we looked at, and it was love at first sight. It has a breathtaking view of Puget Sound and a gorgeous facility—perfect for a sunny summer day.
The vision of our wedding day was inspired by our children; we asked them to stand next to us as our bridal party. Daren and I wrote our vows, which were very emotional. It was important to think of our children in every decision and to celebrate our family culture.
Our parents catered the wedding with Hawaiian, Filipino and other Asian-influenced food like kalua pork, hum bow, sushi, chow mein and chicken adobo. Leis and aloha shirts were flown in from Hawaii for Daren, the boys and the family. Daren’s parents provided the Hawaiian live entertainment with music and dancers. Family also performed dances to celebrate the occasion!
Every detail was special, because we shared it all with our families. The bouquets and decorations were designed by my cousin, with flowers from Whole Foods and a local farmers’ market. The colors were inspired by romantic shades of fuchsia, pink and sherbet.
We also made gorgeous twig centerpieces with handmade flowers to place at the reception tables. Kellen, Maddox and I folded over one hundred origami cranes and placed them as accessories to the centerpieces.
My Look: I wore a strapless tiered wedding gown designed by Tadashi Shoji. It had a ruffles and a small, graceful train. To accessorize, I wore a floral hair pin and a sparkly flower-shaped necklace. I also wore fuchsia heels, matching my bright bouquet.
My Wedding Stylist: Chelsea Hobbs, Downtown Seattle Wedding Suite
I loved the experience at the Wedding Suite! The instant I met my stylist Chelsea she was kind and professional. She was extremely helpful with the alterations process and showed me very tasteful accessories that went with my dress. Chelsea found my hair piece, and I immediately fell in love with its simplicity and elegance.
My sons came to the final fitting appointment. Chelsea genuinely made a point to make them feel comfortable; her sincere kindness made it personal.
Our Special Moments: My favorite moment of the wedding was when my sons walked me down the aisle, and Daren’s children walked with him. I will never forget feeling so proud at that moment of who they’ve become at such a young age.
Family is what is most important to us, and we feel we captured that in our special day.
