As the weather starts to chill, we see stylish ladies in the world’s fashion hubs boot up. Although ankle-grazing booties are still popular, many fashion fans are taking their footwear to dramatic heights with thigh-high, over-the-knee boots.

Wearing an OTK (that’s industry shorthand) can initially seem daunting. Their sexy thigh-circling style might feel like too much for daywear or, for many, too much for any hour. Non-leggy ladies may also fear that their height will cause less-than-supermodel-length stems to seem squat. These are valid concerns, but we have a couple of tips to allay them.

How to Wear Over-the-Knee boots

A simple mini sheath dress is the easiest article of clothing to pair with extra-tall boots. These dresses keep things neat and short, allowing the boots to stand out, which they’ll do no matter what you wear. But by not overwhelming your look with too many layers or accessories, the boots act as an essential part of, rather than an excessive addition to, the outfit. Petite ladies will have the best success with this dress and boot combo.

Fashion Week bomber jacket

A sure way to get noticed at Fashion Week is to sport a stylish, attention-grabbing jacket. Outside the shows, outerwear serves as a quick signal to the paparazzi on where to aim their lenses. And it’s not just during the spring shows, which take place in the cooler winter months, that an outer layer becomes a fashion essential: during all fashion seasons a jacket is a key investment piece for upgrading your wardrobe. After all, you can wear it daily with a lot of visibility, but it doesn’t have to determine what goes on underneath.

Fashion Week jackets
There are a few jacket silhouettes that have dominated the street-style scene in recent Fashion Months. As with all great wardrobe pieces, how each construction is worn and interpreted remains very much up to the individual. Here are some of our favorite shapes from Fashion Week, as well as styles you can shop now during this prime jacket season, as summer transitions into fall.

On the runways and FROWs of Fashion Week and in corporate offices around the world, sneakers are becoming acceptable footwear. These casualwear shoes have become more fashionable—and even outrageous—in recent years, and yet many still opt to sport the retro styles that put the brands on the street map decades ago. Whichever style they choose, tottering women are gratefully kicking off their heels to slide into a soft sole.

This tennis shoe company was founded in Shanghai in the ’20s. Famed for its careful construction and flexible canvas, the shoe was prized by Shaolin monks and other martial artists for their agility. In 2006, Feiyue. was acquired by a French company, which continues to make these lightweight and durable sneaks but with some artful innovations.

How to Wear Turtlenecks

On account of the modest neckline, cloaking capabilities and hickey-hiding potential, turtlenecks have a reputation as a conservative clothing choice. But as these street-style stars show, that dull distinction is unwarranted. Turtlenecks can be sexy and daring, and are easily introduced as a foundational piece in the edgiest outfits.

Turtleneck looks spotted at Fashion WeekMany famous folks sport turtlenecks—check out this Tumblr for hilarious proof. But forget Steve Jobs’ basic black top. Ignore Kim Kardashian’s rubber numbers. Whether plain or as a layer in a carefully constructed look, turtlenecks are this season’s transitional piece.

Fashion Week offered plenty evidence that this classic shirt is keeping it cool.

There were ruffles on the runway. Culottes were in the streets. ’70s chic was everywhere. But one thing unequivocally concluded by this past Fashion Month: the hat is back for women this fall. There were toppers in London, Panamas in Paris and throngs of boaters, derbys and fedoras in New York.

Here are some of our favorite millinery moments from all the fashion cities, paired with the hats to recreate them. It’s a great way to top off your look this season—and next.
Brixton Buckley floppy wool hat

A broad wool hat provides exceptional coverage from the elements, be it rain or wind, during the fall. Wool is a strong fabric, able to resist water while maintaining its shape. This Brixton floppy wool hat has a slightly western aesthetic without going into cowboy territory, and its wide brim flatters the face by framing your features. We like it with sexy shoulders and minimal makeup.

A classic beret seen on the streets of London during Fashion Week.

This mademoiselle, spied on the London scene, pulled off perfectly matched accessories with a polished mien that helped her stand out from the other English roses. Berets always lend a jaunty air to an outfit, but can come off a bit costumey: The trick is in the styling (no scarf, no baguette, no cigarette). We love how this red version adds a pop of color to an autumn outfit. But there’s no need to match your accessories or outerwear to your hat; use it to accent your outfit in a shade that complements your coloring.

Try this Parkhurst beret in a water-repellent wool for a traditional style. If you feel like adding a textural element, don a knit, like this Free People chunky knit beret in ivory. We think they’re très chic and a super-practical way to protect your coiffure from whatever the weather.

There’s something very feminine and subtly sexy about her dress. The silk drapes beautifully and the pattern is delicate and bold at once. Red silk d’Orsay heels up the femme appeal even further. There’s an enviable grace in the lines of this look. Merci, Katerina!
