Fashion Week bomber jacket

A sure way to get noticed at Fashion Week is to sport a stylish, attention-grabbing jacket. Outside the shows, outerwear serves as a quick signal to the paparazzi on where to aim their lenses. And it’s not just during the spring shows, which take place in the cooler winter months, that an outer layer becomes a fashion essential: during all fashion seasons a jacket is a key investment piece for upgrading your wardrobe. After all, you can wear it daily with a lot of visibility, but it doesn’t have to determine what goes on underneath.

Fashion Week jackets
There are a few jacket silhouettes that have dominated the street-style scene in recent Fashion Months. As with all great wardrobe pieces, how each construction is worn and interpreted remains very much up to the individual. Here are some of our favorite shapes from Fashion Week, as well as styles you can shop now during this prime jacket season, as summer transitions into fall.

Good trends don’t die. They endure, season after season, year after year. Sometimes they come back more developed, as in the case of the World War I flyboy uniform and early ’90s outerwear staple, the bomber jacket.

The style returned in a big way two years ago when it landed on the runways of Balmain, Salvatore Ferragamo and Phillip Lim. We haven’t seen the bomber craze wane since. Truthfully, we kind of hope it never goes off our radar again.

So here is our ode, in pictures, to a truly great jacket and some tips, in words, on how to wear one.

If you’ve been searching for inspiration, you have it here: two ideas for how to wear a bomber jacket for spring. This light layer appeals equally to both men and women, so it seemed like the perfect topic for a cross-gender photo shoot using this cool couple.

All images were taken in our hometown of Seattle and feature models Sophia Phillips (also a stylist for us) and her special friend Jesse Brown, the muralist whose works are pictured as well. Photography is by art director Bobby Kelly. Major props go to senior stylist Jodi Taylor for putting together these outfits with commentary and links.

We should point out that Sophia’s bomber, seen above, is a men’s jacket. When it comes to bombers, “men’s” and “women’s” aren’t incredibly meaningful designations. Wear what looks right and call it good!

And keep Jodi’s words of wisdom in mind.

If a single piece of clothing could signify this moment in time—could represent early 2016 and the current winter-into-spring era—it would be the bomber jacket. It works equally well for men and women, and as a cardigan-like layer or true protection against the elements.

Sarah, our Personal Stylist Manager at South Coast Plaza (Costa Mesa, CA), took time during our busy Anniversary Sale to throw out her most-wanted Anniversary items.

1.
Pour la Victoire ‘Prado’ Tote. This is a great bag for fall! It offers function and fashion at a fabulous price.

2.
Stuart Weitzman ‘Accumulate’ Boot. The perfect blend of classic and tough makes this boot extremely versatile.

3.
Zella ‘Live-In Leggings’. Every girl should own these. I wear mine with oversized sweaters and boots. The best part is, you can lose the boots, put on a Zella tee and head to yoga.

4.
Truth & Pride Perforated Leather Biker Jacket. I am crazy about this leather jacket! It works so easily with other pieces, and its biker cut will rev up your fall wardrobe in an instant!

5.
Paige ‘Skyline Skinny’ Jeans. I love the color of the denim and fit of these jeans. The soft grey is a fantastic neutral that will become your go-to bottom for fall.

6.
Marc by Marc Jacobs Oversized Sunglasses. New sunnies are not a summer-only necessity; as the seasons change, so should your shades. This style pictured is the perfect way to break into a larger frame. Go for it!

7.
Joan & David ‘Quimberly’ Pump. A playful-yet-chic pump is the perfect balance to fall’s knits and leather. Wear it to work with a pencil skirt for a sophisticated look, or rock skinny jeans and a leather jacket for a night out.

8.
Vince Boatneck Tee. Premium basics are a wise choice. You need to have cozy, yet stylish, layering pieces to be ready for any kind of weather. Throw it on under a knit or a leather jacket—this tee can do it all!

9.
Clarisonic Mia 2. This is my number-one beauty must-have! Your skin will glow, and you’ll get the most out of your products. This is a game-changer for your skin.

10.
Rebecca Minkoff ‘M.A.C.’ Python-Embossed Crossbody Clutch. Python is a playful way to keep things neutral while adding texture.

Fall’s Easy Third Pieces

While it’s still blazing hot throughout most of the country, we’re looking forward to wearing fall’s go-to third pieces—the capes, jackets and vests that instantly complete any look.

1 – Heritage Jackets. Equestrian-inspired tweeds and plaids mix with suede and feminine tailoring to bring a touch of country-manor charm to your fall wardrobe. And the mini-proportioned version—the shrunken blazer—features big in your layering scheme when worn over tunic-length blouses. [Pictured: Willow & Clay Plaid Riding Jacket]

2 – Capes. Romantic, intriguing and dramatic, capes make us yearn for the nip of fall weather. But as versatile as they are eye-catching, capes crave balance—slim pants and platform-heeled booties will do the trick. [Pictured: Juicy Couture ‘Jane’ Wool Blend Cape]

3 – Vests. Woolly, furry or simply sleek, wear a vest over your long-sleeve bow blouses for a groovy boho-girl vibe. For a borrowed-from-the-BF look, try a vest in a toned-down texture over a plaid button-down. [Pictured: Sanctuary ‘Natalie’ Faux Fur Vest]

4 – Leather Jackets. Toughen up fall’s fluidly femme dresses and blouses—without going to Sturgis-level extremes—with buttery leather jackets that boast moto-inspired zippers and collars, and even a little Easy Rider fringe. [Pictured: Andrew Marc Crop Lambskin Leather Jacket]

5 – Knit Blazers. Give a bit of polish to understated tees with structured blazers and jackets, softened up for fall in refined knit fabrications. [Pictured: Bailey 44 ‘Joie de Vivre’ Knit Jacket]
