By now, we’re all up to speed on the dominance of the fashion sneaker. Worn to work, with dresses for a night out and at front row during Fashion Week, kicks have become a perennial shoe option regardless of the outfit or outing.

Based on our extensive street reconnaissance, we can now report that the fashion hoodie is the next activewear piece to get the all-the-time treatment. We spoke with our Nordstrom styling director, Ruth Basloe, about all the ways to wear the hooded sweatshirt, including with suits, dresses and heels.

What to Wear to Fashion Week: Statement Jackets

Fashion Week bomber jacket

A sure way to get noticed at Fashion Week is to sport a stylish, attention-grabbing jacket. Outside the shows, outerwear serves as a quick signal to the paparazzi on where to aim their lenses. And it’s not just during the spring shows, which take place in the cooler winter months, that an outer layer becomes a fashion essential: during all fashion seasons a jacket is a key investment piece for upgrading your wardrobe. After all, you can wear it daily with a lot of visibility, but it doesn’t have to determine what goes on underneath.

Fashion Week jackets
There are a few jacket silhouettes that have dominated the street-style scene in recent Fashion Months. As with all great wardrobe pieces, how each construction is worn and interpreted remains very much up to the individual. Here are some of our favorite shapes from Fashion Week, as well as styles you can shop now during this prime jacket season, as summer transitions into fall.

quadGimlet-eyed Kristin Yamada is busy snapping street-style starlets during Fashion Week. Here are her photos to inspire you for next season (or this one), and some wardrobe picks to help you get the look.Solange Franklin and Kitty CashStylist Solange Franklin and fashion publicist by day/DJ by night Kitty Cash make for quite the darling street duo. Solange’s look is modern prep with a punk edge. I love the check pattern blocking on her skirt. The safety pin detail and corset-laced tights are subtly subversive, while a collared shirt and loafers feel prim and proper. Kitty is more casual cool in a pair of cuffed jeans, graphic tee, denim jacket and fresh white sneaks. Great coats with tonal patched fur tie these two together. Solange’s shawl collar is classic, and Kitty’s full-back coverage is fun and playful. Great job, ladies!

Street Style: Linda at Thierry Mugler

Linda Tol is really, really good at turning tailored menswear on its head. Her slim, sleek blazer is modern and minimalist, while her wide culottes create an interesting sense of balance. The turtleneck has clearly been one of the top cuts of the season, and you can’t go wrong with a classic cashmere style. A pair of adidas and a bright bag add some sporty elements.

Street Style: Linda Tol at Fendi

Everyone knows I have a style crush on Linda Tol. She is just so creative and exciting to watch. You never know what to expect from her. Today’s powder-blue suit is a far cry from the leisure suits of yore. This suit is crisp, modern and ever so slightly sporty. A fun bag adds a pop of color and pattern. And no purse is complete without a furry charm this season!

Street Style: Linda Tol at Hugo Boss

We can always count on Linda Tol to liven up the day, style-wise. Even in jeans, Linda sparkles. Those glitter boots are pure Bowie, and I want them on my feet immediately! Linda said that she was going for casual disco ball with her look today, and I think she succeeded. A shearling moto and soft turtleneck balance out the bold metallic details.

Street Style: Linda Tol at Tibi

Linda Tol is a style superstar. She’s fearless, creative and cutting-edge. I love how Linda plays with proportion in this look. While her lines are sleek and stark, her palette is soft. Edgy black leather accessories add some classic Linda quirkiness. I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of this Dutch darling as Fashion Week goes on!

Street Report: Linda Outside Veronique Leroy

Oh Linda Tol, how much do I adore thee? Seriously, Linda is a never-ending catwalk of awesome outfits. She’s also super sweet and fun, which makes style stalking her way more rewarding. I love this cheeky tee, which is perfectly appropriate for Fashion Week. Overalls are still a popular style and this modern, design-oriented pair is particularly covetable.
