Prada

A few weeks ago the fashion press reported that Miuccia Prada and Silver Linings Playbook director David O. Russell would collaborate on a short film to be presented during Milan Fashion Week at Prada‘s spring runway event.

Summer is here and sandals are on our mind and feet—and not sandals worn purely for function, like beach flip-flops or shower shoes for the funky locker-room floor. We’re talking about sandals worn out in the world, for style.

Drop “mandal” from your lexicon immediately (to ensure it dies, don’t even say it in jest). While we can’t endure that term, we sympathize with your sandal anxiety. Not every guy can wear them with style; that’s what makes this a medium-to-high-swagger move. You’ll have to BYO confidence.

We spoke with men’s senior stylist Jodi Taylor on how to wear sandals and discussed the big puzzler: socks or no socks. As usual, she had the answers.

Embracing progress, and in turn the young customer, Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi presented a playful collection with exquisite old-school details enhanced by modern technology.

Fendi Milan RTW Fall 2016

As if produced on a 3D printer, crisp ruffles were the through line, appearing on bibs, along sleeves, peplums and tall boots with the slouchy drape of over-the-knee socks. Even the shoes unfurled like alien flowers—in Fifth Element oranges and blues—although they were inspired by 18th-century Japanese botanical illustrations. Lagerfeld explored a sumptuous and earthy fall palette through his patterned furs and embellished golden garments. Fendi’s popular monster trope, seen especially on bag charms worldwide, even peeked from the collar of a navy coat.

Thursday’s shows opened with a nod to nautical at Max Mara, where sailor stripes, stars, ropes and porthole graphics flooded the runway. It was the details that kept them from falling in lockstep: the models’ brightly painted brows, too-long sleeves and buttons all askew. Here and there, sheer fabric revealed a little more.

If you’re in Atlanta wearing Prada, it’s basically Jeffrey Kalinsky’s doing.
The retail icon is Nordstrom’s designer fashion director and he runs two namesake boutiques carrying high fashion. Today he tells Fashionista all about the happy accident that first led him to “put [his] name on the door.”

Not that it was happy at the time. Or, well, unhappy either, it was just … complicated.

Which makes for a good story, of course. Go read How Jeffrey Kalinsky is Competing in a Changing Retail Landscape on Fashionista.com now.

Side note: Fashionista, one of our top industry and scene go-to sites, also reported that yesterday was a sort of beach-and-pool equivalent of Black Friday/Cyber Monday. That is: the “most popular day of the year to buy swimwear online.” If you’re behind on the suit game, you better get on top of it now by shopping our Poolside Pop-In and the rest of our bikini, maillot, and related offerings.

Street Style: Julia at Etro

Julia is channeling a grown-up Wednesday Addams with this ensemble. A black minidress with a contrasting Peter Pan collar is both sweet and goth. A leopard fur coat and steel-toe oxfords amp up the edge exponentially. If I could pull off a Louise Brooks haircut, I would steal Julia’s look in an instant!

Crystal Nicodemus

Milan Fashion Week: February 26

Highlights and commentary from yesterday’s Milan Fashion Week runway shows: Prada plays with pastels in a subversive take on the retro-futurism of the 1960s, while Moschino brings the bling in a campy, loud ‘n’ proud collection that riffs on the street culture of the early ’90s.
