Rebecca Minkoff

When it comes to navigating through life, so much of what we know is passed down from mother to child. In celebration of Mother’s Day, we asked Donna Karan, Lubov Azria, Lela Rose, Rachel Roy, Pamella Roland, Rebecca Minkoff, Rachel Zoe and Kelly Wearstler to tell us, “What’s the greatest advice mothers can share with their children?”

Check out the candid, poignant family photos that each of these designing women generously shared with us…

Donna Karan: Make time for love. “The best advice a mother can give to her child is that love is about time−the time you spend with others, and time you spend taking care of yourself. You need to find the balance and do both,” says Donna Karan, pictured with her daughter Gabby on her wedding day in 2002. (For her special day, Gabby wore a short dress with an added long tulle skirt, made by her mother, of course!)

Lubov Azria: Live your dreams. “Each of my daughters has a unique journey they are embarking on, and I support them wholeheartedly. I always advise them with what I tell myself every day: Work hard, stay focused on your vision, and follow your dreams. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, ‘Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm,’” says Azria, Chief Creative Officer of BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP, which includes BCBG and Herve Leger.

This busy business woman is mother to 6 children with husband Max Azria. Above, Lubov (pictured second from left) enjoys some girl time on Malibu Beach with her daughters Anaïs, 16, Agnès, 14, Marine, 21, and Chloé, 18.

Lela Rose: Conquer with kindness. Designer Lela Rose keeps her motherly advice simple and sweet: “Be nice, be nice, be nice.”

The New York-based Texan transplant is pictured with her two children, Grey, 11, and Rosey, 6, and their two Yorkshire terriers, Stitch and Bobbin.

Rachel Roy: You can make a difference. “The best advice I give my girls, which my mother instilled in me, is the importance of giving back to those in need,” shares Rachel Roy, pictured with her two daughters, Tallulah Ruth, 5, and Ava, 13.

Pamella Roland: Easy does it. “As my children have grown, my best advice to mothers of young children would be to not sweat the small stuff−you let go and let your children learn by making their mistakes, and you have to pick your battles,” says Pamella Roland.

During New York Fashion Week, you can always spot her three children, Cole, Sydney and Cassandra, cheering from the front row.

We offer Pamella Roland in selected stores. For locations, please contact a Designer Specialist at 1.877.543.7463.

Rebecca Minkoff: Search for excellence. “Find your PASSION and give 100%. It may or may not be easy to find; maybe the search will be painful and long, but you will find it at some point. And the feeling of satisfaction knowing you have given 100% brings tremendous contentment,” says Rebecca Minkoff, photographed with son Luca Shai, who will turn 2 in September.

Rachel Zoe: Do the right thing. “Always be kind, always have manners and always be grateful. Never be greedy, never be jealous and never be cruel,” says Rachel Zoe on the words of wisdom she instills in her son Skyler, 2.

Kelly Wearstler: Be a go-getter. “The best advice I can give my boys is the same advice my mother instilled in me: the only person who can make something happen for you is YOU. Be compassionate, be self-reliant, and love what you do,” shares Kelly Wearstler with her boys Elliott, 9, and Oliver, 10.

On Mother’s Day, remember the women who gave—and lived out—the best life advice for you.

(Uh-oh: Still need a last-minute gift for Mom? Don’t fret, we’ve got you covered!)

In case you missed it yesterday, the lovely Rebecca Minkoff took our Instagram account hostage (we didn’t mind!) to share what it’s like to spend a day in her shoes (these fabulous ‘Matty’ Sandals in black, to be exact). For more behind-the-scenes, follow her on Instagram @rebeccaminkoff.

Who should we hand our @Nordstrom reins over to next?

Joanna Hillman is a personal fashion icon for me (and no stranger to The Thread). She exudes urban sophistication and manages to mold current trends to her own taste. I’m not sure that I ever manage to achieve her level of cool, but I like to try!

Today, she is rocking a modern sporty look—with a hint of racing blue and graphic checks. Thanks for the continued inspiration, Ms. H!

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, we asked model Victoria Anderson to dish about what she’s planning to give her beau on Cupid’s most cuddly day of the year.

It’s the first New York Fashion Week season for Victoria, who is signed with Wilhelmina. The North Carolina-born beauty moved to the Big Apple just 2 years ago and hasn’t looked back since. We spotted the runway rookie backstage at Rebecca Minkoff doing a little knitting and immediately had to get the scoop about her artsy craft.

The Thread: Are you a designer-in-training?
Victoria Anderson: I knit and crochet as a hobby. It keeps me relaxed at shows and it’s a great way to keep myself occupied in between castings and fittings. I taught myself how to do it about a year ago, watching how-to videos on YouTube.

What are you working on?
Victoria: I am actually making a scarf for my boyfriend for Valentine’s Day. It’s so cold right now that I think it will be the perfect gift. I just hope I finish it in time!

Any special Valentine date night plans?
Victoria: I love to cook, so I’ll probably make a special dinner for him.  I’m really into baking and making pies. I do my own homemade crust—it’s so yummy.

Check out more Valentine gift ideas.

The Theatre at Lincoln Center was bustling as Rebecca Minkoff prepared to give us her latest POV on her ladylike-meets-tomboy style, a theme that consistently runs throughout her ready-to-wear, handbags, footwear and accessories collections.

The California-born designer assembled 30 looks for fall/winter 2013 that brought a new attitude to sophisticated grunge.

Dressers work tirelessly to steam each look to perfection.

Malu with One Management was all smiles backstage as she shared her excitement over walking to live runway music provided by the band Wild Cub.

Show notes for the collection outlined each look as the modern girl’s manifesto. “She’s forward-thinking but doesn’t lose sight of the past. She wears her clothes with edge but not without elegance. She pushes the envelope while maintaining her polish. She’s the perfect paradox.”

We asked Solomiya Zgoda with Ford Models what she enjoyed most about the look of the collection, and she immediately held up her perfectly polished pointers. Essie provided the multi-hued nail art.

These herringbone booties and embossed gloves stood out in a major way. “I dream about leather,” gushed Rebecca on why it’s her favorite material to use.

A live stream of Twitter and Instagram comments provided the visual décor at the entrance of the runway. Minkette’s simply had to use the hash tag #RMFALL to be part of Rebecca’s Fall 13 conversation.

This Italian-leather bowler satchel is the byproduct of feedback from thousands of Minkoff fans, who voted on the shape, hardware and color. Designed and crafted in New York City, this exquisitely made satchel features the signature Minkoff flap, long leather laces and striking gold accents, in two versatile colors (periwinkle, black). Exclusively at Nordstrom, this sculpted bag is the perfect arm candy for the fashion-savvy.

Britt and Whit are best buds and partners in crime on their blog Britt + Whit. The San Francisco duo is thrilled to be in NYC, donning their favorite dresses and catching as many shows as possible.

While they’re having a good time dressing for the heat, they said they love the cooler SF weather. When they go home, they’ve got plans to break out their new fave fall trends: leather, oxblood and velvet!

Although she says she’s exhausted after flying in from Australia, Ulyana looks gorgeous! She’s here to cover the shows for Fashion Squared, one of Oz’s biggest style sites. Australia is definitely one of the most interesting new fashion scenes.

Ulyana has a unique, slightly cheeky style and says fashion should be fun. I totally agree!

Legendary photographer Slim Aaron’s shots of vacationing celebrities in the ’60s and ’70s inspired Rebecca Minkoff’s spring/summer 2013 collection full of desaturated tropical prints, floppy lapels and breezy fabrics. It was hard not to hear the Beach Boys echoing in my ears as the models walked the runway with their long, loose waves and sunkissed cheeks. Time to renew my passport.
