Vintage Nordstrom

Breezy jumpsuits are looking fresh and modern—even though they made their sartorial debut more than 40 years ago. Updated prints and cuts are now making this an easy piece for a jump-start to your summer.

Let’s look past the ‘Brady Bunch’ background and ‘I Dream of Jeannie’ eyeshadow, and talk about how we’d put a current spin on that ‘70s glam.

1 – Ditch those block-heel shoes in favor of strappy flat sandals for a casual outfit, or simple wedges for a dressier version.
2 – For a wider-leg jumpsuit, make sure the hem skims the top of your toes—this 1970 look could be a little longer.
3 – Let the jumpsuit take center stage by adding a simple crossbody bag and streamlined jewelry.
4 – Channel your inner Charlie’s Angel confidence, and you’re good to go.

We were doing a little digging around in our trove of old Nordstrom catalogs and kept coming across looks that are feeling relevant again today—with a few tweaks. How about a little show and tell?

Welcome to 1994. Bill Clinton was President; Ace of Base was dominating the Billboard charts; Justin Bieber had just entered the world. Meanwhile, on the fashion front, menswear-inspired women’s wear was all the rage.

While the styling is 18 years old (anyone else remember that haircut?), we love this slouchy, denim button-up blouse paired with high-waist, pleated pants—and it’s definitely a combo we’re seeing come back on the streets. Here’s how we’d update it for 2012.

1 — Choose a denim or chambray top with a vintage aesthetic. Make sure it’s a little baggy, and roll up the sleeves for that lived-in look.

2 — Ditch the earrings, button the shirt all the way up and throw on a statement collar necklace.

3 — Keep the shirt tucked in, but lose the belt.

4 — Add some color to your look with vibrant printed heels.

5 — Throw on an oversized masculine watch to keep with the menswear theme.

6 — Add your final touch with a pop of gold on a clutch.
