It’s like a bad joke:
Q: What does the maximalist take to Fashion Week?
Sure, the weather reports are dire, but everything else about New York and London Fashion Weeks is shaping up to be, in a word, amazing. And the same goes for Milan and Paris—which follow after the Big Apple and Big Ben kick things off.
Clearly the only answer is all of the above. And below.
Maybe I should take a step back, though. After all, you and I have not properly met.
I joined Nordstrom about four months ago as the editor of this scrolling mash-up of inspiration and information, and together with Jeff Powell and Andrew Matson, we’ve put together a Fashion Week game plan that includes the killer, shop-it-now street style and on-point runway, backstage and trend reports that you may have grown to count on in years past, as well as—new this season—daily posts comprising a sort of everything-and-the-kitchen-sink mix of people, parties, culture and scene. Think: the parade of fashion, the circus of the runway and the people who play big and small, front-of-house and backstage roles in it all.
That’ll be yours truly on the ground rounding up those stories, so to my mind, if our blog coverage is set to be exhaustive, my wardrobe had better be too, right?
Because when I play my own devil’s advocate (and believe me, my inner dialogues have been, like, shades of sixth grade debate class), I remind myself that I’m headed to New York, London, and Paris to work. And while a party girl needs pointy-toe Prada pumps, a working girl—as Melanie Griffith taught us—needs sneakers. That’d be those taupe Celine’s, above.
And while it’s important to stay warm and rock a nuanced, individual style in the sea of the scene, it’s only respectful to show up at, say, the Marc by Marc Jacobs show in a Marc by Marc Jacobs sweater. Since I’m going from New York straight to London, the luggage for this leg of the tour includes my favorite Americans—from Phillip Lim to Creatures of the Wind—and my favorite Londoners. Say it with me: Topshop party!
(Side note: Topshop Unique is live on our site today!)
So look, I’ve either thought it all out in a good way, or I’m overthinking it. The only way for either of us to find out is to just do it. So let’s do this. Shall we?
My NYFW daily journal posts begin on Friday, February 13. See you there. I mean here.
