Video: A Menswear Remix by ‘Art Comes First’

Expert tailors, vintage preservationists, and performance artists all in one, Sam Lambert and Shaka Maidoh founded Art Comes First (ACF) to keep the art form of hands-on craftsmanship in clothing alive and well.

Their current project, ‘The Hard Graft,’ is an art installation that comes to life on the spot. By applying DJ’ing techniques to menswear (from ‘crate-digging’ for vintage pieces, to ‘blending’ the dismantled parts, to a ‘final mix’ of styled-out looks), the ACF team creates a sartorial tribute to music legends from Chet Baker to Hendrix—in the span of a day, as passersby look on in awe.

For More: The video above documents ACF’s performance at CIFF in Copenhagen. Check out detailed photos on ACF’s Tumblr, a visual recap of their recent NY installation here—and if you’re in the neighborhood, catch the next ‘Hard Graft’ exhibit August 19-21 at Liberty trade show in Las Vegas.

You are kidding. Who is your target audience?

Hi R, thanks for reading and for your comment. To answer your question, we hope to appeal to an audience that is interested in clothing, as well as style in a larger sense, such as art, music, food and drink, travel, and so on. We enjoyed these gentlemen’s work for its sheer creativity, and for the homage it pays to menswear history. We’re sorry if you did not feel the same—and we will always welcome your thoughts on what kinds of content you’d enjoy seeing more of.
Best,

Thanks for the great write up and exposure, highly appreciated, would love to add that this project would not have been a success without the help and hard work from the collective members such as Matteo Gioli of superduper hats, Jennifer Maher and mostly Liam Maher, who is the head design and creative director at Denham. Liam has been an inspiration, mentor and great friend and his work and contribution along side Matteo and his wife Jennifer is what made this project what it is.
thanks

I’m just now learning of ACF and this specific collective and glad I am! Awesome stuff – wish I could get my hands on some of their items.
