Ultimate Coat Guide: Penfield Toggle Coat

When our Ultimate Coat Guide debuted yesterday, the first coat that caught our eye was the Penfield parka above.

Founded in Hudson, Massachusetts in 1975, Penfield takes pride in designing garments fit for New England winters. This jacket’s Teflon® coating and real down fill have the ‘winter’ part covered—while Ivy League details like genuine wood-and-rope toggles and a hood lined with tartan plaid (must be somebody’s school colors) reflect the brand’s preppy roots.

If you’re looking for an insulated coat with a touch of class, this is it. Channel Holden Caulfield and wear it over a blazer and repp tie. (Trapper hat optional.)

can someone please tell me what pants and shoes this model is wearing in the main picture?

Hi Scott, thanks for your inquiry.
I checked with our Stylist team. The pants are Vince and the boots are by Wolverine.

I am curious as to what this type of style is called.

Justin, Blog Editor November 20, 2012 at 6:01 am

Hi Torey, thanks for your question.
We called this a ‘Toggle Coat’ in the title of this post, because we wanted to call attention to the classic style of wood-and-rope closure; in our Ultimate Coat Guide, however, this coat falls under the wider category of ‘Insulated Coats,’ due to its being padded with a layer of super-warm down.

I would love a version of the main coat in a wool/peacoat style material with the same closures. Not a fan of down personally…
