Starting Lineup: Our Favorite Varsity Jackets

A menswear standout amongst the awesome (and often peculiar) specimens in our new Brite Lites_Gift City Pop-In Shop, the Opening Ceremony varsity jacket above inspired us to bring 15 of our favorite baller-status jackets off the bench.

It’s fitting that Opening Ceremony—named for the Olympic Games and their spirit of global collaboration—would nail this sport-inspired staple. Springboarding off the Ivy League references that have been heavily influencing men’s clothing in recent years, countless designers have endeavored to give varsity jackets their own signature twist—including envelope-pusher Marc Jacobs in his Spring ’14 runway show. You don’t have to rock gargantuan patches or go metallic space-cadet to update the versatile, mid-weight layer once reserved for jocks (and marching-band members!), though. Our favorites range from true-to-tradition tributes to slimmed-down versions in subtle black-on-black. Sub the latter for a sportcoat on casual workdays—they’ll look as sharp with a tie as they do with sweats and sneakers.
