Inter-brand collaborations in the menswear universe may have reached a near-comedic level years ago—but when a partnership starring labels as universally loved as New Balance and Herschel Supply Co. comes along, how can we do anything besides pause for a collective moment of admiration…Before starting in on the tough math of whether you can splurge for both the sneaker and the boot.

Scroll down for details; as you can see, the special-edition 420 sneaker and 710 boot both come with custom paisley lining (a Herschel signature), and brown leather accents reminiscent of your favorite backpack. (Herschel ‘Heritage Plus’ backpacks, with internal laptop sleeves, and ‘Novel’ duffel bags in corresponding colors are available as well.)

These guys are selling fast, but there are a few sizes left in the following colors:

The gifts men appreciate most are the ones we can get maximum mileage out of, day in and day out. Case in point: Polo Ralph Lauren’s refined and highly functional finishing touches. Inspired by vintage men’s sporting holdalls, the handcrafted bags seen here are made from burnished saddle leather and durable twill, trimmed with leather and antique brass hardware. For the rugged yet refined dad, husband, boyfriend, brother or son who’s gone above and beyond in the niceness department this year, there’s really no other choice.

GQ Selects: October Look #5

Classic kicks in custom colors are popping up all over menswear blogs and street-style slideshows lately. Wear a look like this on the walk from the gym to work in the morning—or all day long, if your gig is a creative one. Either way, opt for the quintessential old-school sneaker, New Balance, and keep everything else sharply tailored, from your tie to your bag.

New Balance ’574 Backpack’ Sneaker. “We advocate wearing these with a suit in our October issue. The retro running style works so well with one, thanks to its profile—the sneaker retains the sportiness of the original, but without any of the bulk. The bold color creates a cool contrast against something as traditional as a suit, but wouldn’t be out of place under cuffed khakis or slim sweatpants on the weekend.”

as featured in GQ, in a flash. Get the same look
with the red or black version instead.]

Bally Leather Portfolio. “Guys tired of lugging around a bulky briefcase should try a portfolio for a change, especially one with a profile as slim as this Bally number. Not only will it easily hold your daily haul, but the portfolio does it with infinitely more style than that beat-up brief. The folio isn’t too precious, though: The soft pebble-grain leather gives it a rugged edge.”

Jack Spade is sensitive to the fact that guys don’t want a lot of bells and whistles. I appreciate that what Jack Spade does is make products that are simple, but never boring. This rucksack, which is different from a backpack because of the drawstring and single closure, comes in this amazing red that would look incredible with a khaki or navy cotton suit or even an army jacket and jeans on the weekend.

“The durable matte-nylon material makes it easy to clean, so it works for the office or the beach, and the lined interior is equally suited for an iPad or six-pack of beer. You don’t feel like a college kid wearing it, or a mountain climber, just like a cool guy who wants some color in his wardrobe without incorporating it into his outfit.”

Visiting NYC a couple weeks ago for a top-secret project (more on that later), we stopped by Nordstrom sister store Treasure & Bond to check out the wares. T&B is a store like no other—for one thing, it stocks ridiculously cool stuff, from the under-the-radar menswear below, to bizarrely beautiful jewelry for your significant other, to a charcoal sketching utensil shaped like a squid. But even more importantly, all profits (that’s right, ALL) go to a rotating roster of worthy causes benefiting kids right there in NYC.

So if you live in New York, by all means, pay them a visit at 350 West Broadway. And if you live elsewhere, fear not: If something here speaks to you, give Treasure & Bond a call at 646-669-9049 and they’ll hook you up.
