GQ Selects: November Look #1

Our newest edition of GQ Selects is live as of this morning. First up: a deceptively simple kit that proves, while a perfect shirt is an important starting point, it’s accessories that make the man—even when they’re as cost-effective as a $15 tie bar. GQ Creative Director Jim Moore explains:

Gant Rugger Knit Cap. “This knit hat from Gant Rugger takes inspiration from the watch caps worn by fishermen and dockworkers and renders it in the meanest color of the season: mustard. For guys who are wary of the bold hue, it’s best to start with a single piece like this.”

Band of Outsiders Plaid Oxford Woven Shirt. “Scott Sternberg has created the ideal button-down for modern guys. It’s a classic style, but he’s played with the proportions, shrinking them to hug the body and shortening the length so it looks good untucked. This neutral brown-and-grey plaid is the perfect starter shirt for the guy who wants to get some pattern into his closet, but is apprehensive about jumping into the deep end.”

The Tie Bar Matte-Eggplant Tie Bar. “We’ve long been advocating the tie bar as a must-have finishing touch for guys. While the classic options are polished silver or gold, a new breed of colors and finishes offer a breath of fresh air, like a deep burgundy hue in a matte finish. It adds a small dose of color—and a big shot of visual variation—to your basic shirt-and-tie combinations.”

Timex ‘Easy Reader’ Leather Strap Watch. “Grey is the watch color of the season. What’s great about the trend is that you can get one at any price, like this Timex® [$65]. A rugged suede strap balances out the minimalist details, like the pared-down gunmetal-plated case and the tonal face, while the sleek profile gives it a contemporary look that’s wearable seven days a week.”

GQ Selects: October Look #2

The true beauty of a plaid shirt: It looks as good on the weekend as it does with a tie Monday morning. Here are some insights from Jim Moore at GQ on one of our favorite American designer’s impeccable shirt—plus our own suggestions to dress it up for the office:

Todd Snyder Plaid Sport Shirt. “Plaid shirts have been everywhere for the past few years, but there is a new batch out there amping up traditional patterns in a fresh way. Todd Snyder’s classic button-down offers a basic plaid, but renders it in an eye-catching white and navy with sky-blue and red accents. It’s a seven-day-a-week shirt that would pop under a charcoal gray suit, or with a pair of cords and a cardigan to watch the big game.”

When I think of a shirt like this, I think of it having to be from Brooks Brothers because that’s ground zero in your search for a pink oxford. The quality is incredible, the fit is trimmer and it sports a smaller collar than the traditional styles. It can stand up to 500 washings and just gets better with age. There’s a little texture to the fabric which helps anchor any other sturdy fall fabrics you put it with. The pink is not so bright as to make you feel like a dandy, but it does give enough of a jolt of color to brighten up a pale, sunless face come winter. At this price, it’s probably one of your best fall investments.”

Whenever I think of clothes with a lot of spirit I think of Michael Bastian. This is a case in point where he’s taken a simple Bengal-stripe shirt and amped it up in this tomato orange color that matches wonderfully to greys, navies and earth tones.

Bastian’s button-down collars tend to be a bit higher and longer, so they sit well under a cardigan, tweed jacket or your dressiest suit, with or without a tie. It’s a shirt that’s anchored in a classic menswear piece but has a bit of continental flair.

“To most designers a henley is a henley, but not to Todd Snyder. He’s found ways to do these really masculine pieces but make them his own and make them original.

“The placket and collar are trimmed with chambray fabric, which creates some visual interest at the front, and turns the piece into something that looks as good under a jacket as it does by itself. Snyder’s touches take something born in underwear culture and turn it into a fashion staple.”

—Jim Moore, GQ Creative Director

“The dress shirt of the season. You’re getting that perfect Thom Browne fit and a shirt from him that, at this point, is a great American classic. I think once a guy takes the leap and puts on a Thom Browne shirt, he is pretty much hooked. Thom changes up his patterns every season, and I love that he went for a big, loud plaid this time around. While the pattern might seem intense, the shirt’s classic silhouette remains restrained so it works whether dressed up with a business suit and tie or untucked with a pair of shorts.”
