Travis Gumbs

Whether the founders of epic blog Street Etiquette are on location in Antwerp, hanging out with legendary MC/actor Mos Def, or covering New York Fashion Week for yours truly here at the Nordstrom Men’s Shop, they do it all with an unconventional yet at-ease sense of personal style (as the pics above, courtesy of the guys’ own Instagram feeds, go to show).

That’s why we’re very excited to extend our collaboration with Joshua Kissi (above left) and Travis Gumbs beyond Fashion Week, by inviting the two to hand-pick 40 of their favorite items from our site.

(They even took this task a step further by pulling not just individual pieces, but outfits: Each row of items represents a complete look, from a designer gym kit to their own take on a Nick Wooster-esque shorts-suit for spring. Click through and you’ll see what we mean.)

As Joshua Kissi and Travis Gumbs of Street Etiquette (along with ace photographer Joshua Woods) wrap up their visually stunning New York Fashion Week photo journal for the Nordstrom Men’s Shop, the guys were kind enough to send over the video retrospective above. You might recognize some of the week’s more memorable imagery—the symphony of lights at Moncler, Josh’s vintage military coat, the girl in the lion skirt—but seeing it all in motion, with a buzzing NYC as the backdrop, feels even more like you’re right there living it.

Once you’re done vicariously visiting NYFW above, keep your earphones in for the added bonus below: an excerpt from Joshua Kissi’s iPod during the hectic week of hitting shows, shooting photos, and living to tell the tale.

From Joshua: “Music plays a grand part in my life. Depending on my mood, it may be something upbeat or slow, lyrics or instrumental. Either way, music starts and ends my days, and was an integral part of keeping up with the fashion week madness.”

After offering you a glimpse on Instagram, the first bona fide batch of dailies from our friends Joshua Kissi and Travis Gumbs of Street Etiquette is in—and as one might expect, their vision of New York Fashion Week is as nonchalantly stunning as everything else they do. Follow their Day 1 journey below, from cab rides to runways to impeccable people-watching, and stay tuned for more from Street Etiquette at NYFW.

From Joshua: “The first day of fashion week started with a bang, from street style to the runways. We started early at 9am with a showing of Todd Snyder’s Fall 2013 men’s collection. After our fifth season or so of attending the festivities, we see it’s something that people both dread [due to the hectic schedule] and admire. We’re excited for the remaining days of fashion week!”

There are style blogs—and then there’s Street Etiquette. By weaving a deep-rooted fascination with culture, community, history and humanity through everything they do—from the clothes they wear to the global adventures they undertake—Street Etiquette founders Joshua Kissi and Travis Gumbs transcend run-of-the-mill “What I Wore Today” sites, striving instead to answer a more pressing question: What I Did Today.

That’s why we’re honored and excited to collaborate with these gentlemen and scholars to bring you that rare style spectacle—New York Fashion Week—through Street Etiquette’s eyes. Joshua and Travis will be on the ground in their hometown of NYC, sending us daily dispatches of the people and places that catch their attention; and doing it all with their signature sense of personal style, which ranges from thoughtful tailoring to punk-rock pattern mixing.

Our coverage commences later this week, right here on the Men’s Shop Daily, as well as on our Men’s Shop Instagram feed (@NordstromMen). For now though, scroll down to learn about some of Street Etiquette’s recent projects—and see exactly why we’re looking forward to working with them.

Even before Joshua and Travis shifted their focus from personal style to thought-provoking photo essays, they often based their outfit posts on historical research—mining sources like the Time/Life Archive and The Selvedge Yard for vintage inspiration.

Street Etiquette’s Tumblr feed isn’t just pretty pictures; it’s a digital pipeline of tangible influences, from classic jazz to abstract art.

Born in 1967 and (as their Nylite Project homepage states) “worn by Björn Borg in the era when tennis stars made rock stars blush,” Tretorn’s Nylite canvas sneaker is a true classic.

Thankfully, the good people at Tretorn are firm believers that perfection should, in fact, be messed with—and encouraged style bloggers all over the globe to treat fresh, white Nylites like blank canvases for their own, fully personalized, DIY works of art. Our favorite examples are below.

Travis Gumbs of Street Etiquette dyed his Nylites this rich cranberry hue—
a perfectly subtle pop of color for fall.

Inspired by summer odd jobs as a kid, F.E. Castleberry of Unabashedly Prep
spattered his pair with paint.

Jake Gallagher, author of the blog Wax Wane (as well as a regular GQ Eye contributor)
dipped his in Kool-Aid—purple flavor, of course.

The man behind I Am Sangsouvanh mixed two parts olive-green dye with one part kelly green—
“not too bright and not too dark.”

Noah Emrich pulled off a pretty skilled gradient effect.
