A Holiday Conversation with Antica Farmacista

A leader in luxury home fragrance, Antica Farmacista blends the finest essential oils and natural ingredients to create one-of-kind fragrances for the home and body. We find Seattle-based best friends and the co-creators of the brand, Shelley Callaghan and Susanne Pruitt, in conversation, as Shelley finds out about Susanne’s favorite holiday scents and how she gets ready for the holidays.

BFFs in Business: Susanne Pruitt (left) and Shelley Callaghan launched Antica Farmacista in 2003. The pair attributes their success to laughs and friendship.

SHELLEY CALLAGHAN: What scents evoke the holiday memories most for you, and what are some of your favorites?
SUSANNE PRUITT: The scents that are most reminiscent of the holidays for me are my mother’s orange and apple cider on the stove, the smell of the garland around the house and the cigar that my dad only smokes at Christmas time!

SHELLEY: I love how close our extended families are and how we spend time together during the holidays. What tradition are you most looking forward to this year?
SUSANNE: My favorite memories are when we all gather in your kitchen and cook together! Our 4 teenage boys stand around the kitchen island, and friends and family come and go all night.

SHELLEY: What are your secrets for making your home holiday-ready?
SUSANNE: We always fill the house with garland, white poinsettias and plenty of Antica candles illuminating our home. ‘Prosecco’ and ‘Manhattan’ votive candles are my combination for the season ahead! The kids still love to unpack the nutcrackers that we have had for 20 years and the wooden Santa sleigh that my grandfather handmade about 30 years ago.

SHELLEY: How do you make hosting look stress-free?
SUSANNE: We always love to have tins of cheese straws that my mother sends me from Atlanta; plenty of White Burgundy and Rose Champagne; and I always have Antica 100 ml diffusers by the door as gifts for guests on their way out the door!

SHELLEY: How are you planning on relieving the hectic nature of the holidays?
SUSANNE: I have found that over the years, it is important to not overcommit to parties and gatherings. There needs to be plenty of time for game night with family and spontaneous gatherings with friends. It is also a relief to have plenty of laughter, an abundance of good wine and a gift closet that is always stocked for those last-minute gift needs!
