Beauty & Fragrance

A three-part miniseries in which we ask the founders of beloved home fragrance brands to share their favorite aromas and their secrets to creating a home’s signature scent.

Since launching in 2008, award-winning NEST Fragrances has quickly developed a devoted following of its luxurious, well-curated fragrances thanks in no small part to the discerning taste (and nose) of founder Laura Slatkin.

Of all in the world, what are your top three favorite smells?
My three favorite aromas are always with me when I am entertaining guests at home, which is something I am very passionate about and enjoy very much. The first is the scent of the perfume I am wearing and the cologne my husband, Harry, puts on as we dress for dinner. Then, I start to smell the wonderful aromas coming from the kitchen while dinner is being prepared, and that always makes me smile. And last, but certainly not least, I will light either Grapefruit or Sicilian Tangerine 3-Wick Candles in the entryway of my home to set a festive mood for my guests as they arrive. Fresh citrus and tropical fruit home fragrances are always best to use when entertaining because they are universally appealing—everybody loves a refreshing, citrusy fragrance!

A signature fragrance. That beloved scent worn as part of a unique identity. It may change over time as tastes and moods shift, but we’ve all experienced an encounter with a familiar combination of aromas, even after years have passed, and they immediately trigger memories: evoking thoughts of mom, dad, friends, an old flame. Scent, as we all know, is a powerful thing. Which is why, in this new series, we explore the signature fragrances of real women–what they love and why they love it–to navigate this invisible world and discover new fragrances to adore.

Liz Marley is a wordsmith by day and perfume genius by night. We know her here at Nordstrom HQ as a talented writer, but she also happens to have her own line of perfume she’s worked to develop and launch–PARFUM MAGNÉT. She’s serious about fragrance and clearly a perfect choice to tap for our inaugural signature fragrance story. Read on as she shares what she’s wearing now and a few choice recommendations.

Our beauty trend editor Kate Fannin picks some of her favorite new fragrances with clean, modern scents that put a fresh spin on floral.

Like many women my age, my earliest “perfume memories” are heavily scented with Love’s Baby Soft, Jean Naté After Bath Splash and a few Designer Imposters body sprays (you know you had one in your locker). But my first true love was Tea Rose. Although my siblings begged me to stop spraying it everywhere, I’m pretty sure it’s why I still love floral-based scents (that, and memorizing every word to “The Yellow Rose of Texas”).

My go-to scents at home (along with a couple favorite vintage brooches and the must-have Louboutin nail polish!).

Thankfully, my “nose” for fragrance has evolved over the years, and I’m excited that florals continue to find new ways to reinvent themselves. Read on for my newest picks, classic favorites and must-haves for your home.

Snow White and the Huntsman

Starring Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron, the perfectly cast Snow White and The Huntsman movie opens today. The ladies on our Beauty Team (already in love with Deborah Lippmann’s ‘Snow White & The Huntsman’ Nail Lacquer Set)  are completely enamored with the blockbuster looks of the jealous queen and her object of envy. They jumped at the chance to share some expert tips for creating a little fairy-tale-flawlessness in your own reality.

Snow White:
Get the natural glow of this heroine that’s innocent and light, with just the right amount of pluck to ensure you’ll live happily ever after.

1 Hydration is key! Go for a tinted moisturizer underneath a powder foundation. Use your fingertips and gently press into the skin for a natural finish.
Try: Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 (in Golden Radiance) | stila ‘illuminating’ powder foundation SPF 12 (in 60 WATTS)

2 – Choose subtle eye shadows and bring the color close to the lash line—this will keep the focus on your eyes and not your shadow. Use an angled liner bush to keep everything soft against the lash line.
Try: theBalm ‘Nude‘tude’ Eyeshadow Palette

3 – Don’t overdo your lip; we suggest a natural-looking gloss with just a hint of color.
Try: philosophy ‘wild berry jam’ lip shine (Nordstrom exclusive)

4 – Apply a bit of highlight on the cheekbones and under the brow, and finish everything off with an innocent but tempting fragrance.
Try: DKNY ‘Be Delicious’ Eau de Parfum

The Queen:
Mirror, mirror on the wall, be the fairest of them all—no poisoned apples required, just luxurious vitality that’s all at once fierce and youthful. In short, fit for a queen.

1 – Again, start with moisturizer, but make it work even harder for you by applying a serum first. Get those haughty cheekbones by applying a pop of color to the apples of the cheeks blended up to the hairline.
Try: Erno Laszlo ‘Hollywood Collection’ Intensive Porcelain Veil (Nordstrom Exclusive) | M•A•C ‘Très Cheek” Powder Blush (in Immortal Flower)

2 – For the eyes, use a little neutral shadow in the same tone as your hair to define your brows. They frame the face—showing off your true perfection. You’ll also want a seductive, smoky eye, but give it even more magic with liner under your lashes and along the waterline.
Try: Yves Saint Laurent ‘Pure Chromatics’ Wet & Dry Eyeshadow Palette (in ‘Stone’)

3 – Go for a nude lip, but get bewitching definition by finding a lip liner in a similar color.
Try: Tom Ford Private Blend Lipstick (in Pink Adobe)

4 – Choose a fragrance that’s as unforgettable as you are. Make it longer lasting by spraying it on your pulse points right after the shower.
Try: Clive Christian ‘X’ Women’s Pure Perfume Spray

While we’re on the subject of Daria Strokous, let’s take a few minutes to frolic with her through Versailles in head-to-toe Dior. Consider this your daily dose of glamour: “Secret Garden – Versailles,” Dior’s new film directed by Inez & Vinoodh.

We’re a little distracted daydreaming about regal French châteaux and running through a luxurious parterre with Depeche Mode in our ears. Rather than fantasize about it, we’ll be doing a little shopping to recreate the gorgeous look of Strokous’s doe-eyed close-ups. Here’s what’s on our list: dove-grey nail lacquer, a smoked-out cat-eye, thick black lashes and liner all finished with a simple nude lip.

Add a little yo-ho-ho to your va-va-voom with the new Hey, Sailor collection by M·A·C—inspired by vintage, pin-up girl glam. Shiver me timbers!

Beauty Brights

The time is right for brash swaths of color, from pretty pouts to neon nails. Here are four tips for getting a look no one will outshine.

1 – Lip Service. Swipe on a little long-lasting wow. Start with a deep, rich lip color and top with a shimmering coat of gloss. [Pictured: M·A·C Lipstick, M·A·C Dazzleglass Lipcolour]

2 – Lash Out. Want your eyes to look brighter and more wide-open? Who doesn’t? Apply a deep black on your top lashes and layer a subtle brown on your lower lashes. Hello, doe eyes. [Pictured: Estée Lauder Sumptuous Two Tone Eye-Opening Mascara]

3 – Scents of Humor.
Feminine, happy and perfectly sweet, a delicious fragrance is just one more way to show off your colorful side. [Pictured: Prada Candy Eau de Parfum Spray]

4 – French Mani Gone Wild.
Sure, you can wear one of these pop colors alone, but try going bolder: paint your first coat in one shade then just your tips (or moons) in another. Mais oui! [Pictured: Deborah Lippmann Run the World (Girls) Neon Mini Nail Lacquer Set]
