Chanel-Amy-Wechsler

Chanel’s new oil-free moisturizer for sensitive skin, La Solution 10 de Chanel, has arrived at Nordstrom, and the reviews are rave. We spoke with Dr. Amy Wechsler, who collaborated with the iconic fashion house on their latest offering, about the product and why it’s so revolutionary for sensitive skin—and what we can do at home to make our own skin shine.

You are board certified in both dermatology and psychiatry. How has that shaped your philosophy and practice?
A lot of patients come for help with their appearance and end up talking about life issues. Skin care can be so emotional. So much of how we think affects how we look, and vice versa. I’ve always believed in a very strong mind-body, and, more specifically, mind-skin connection. There are so many interconnections between the brain and the skin in terms of circulation, neurotransmitters and hormones. Anything that affects our mind, in either a positive or negative way, will definitely affect our skin.

You speak to what you call the mind-beauty connection both in your practice and in your book (of the same title). What are a few small things a woman can do with that mind-body connection to enhance her natural beauty?

Sleep! So many of us are burning the candle at both ends, and sleep deprivation has become the new normal. It causes stress, which can damage the skin and worsen skin conditions. While you sleep, your body repairs the damage of the day, and interrupting sleep by staying up too late or waking up in the middle of the night, slows down cell renewal. When your sleep is synchronized with your body’s natural rhythms, you’ll look better and feel younger.

There are lots of things other than sleep that are anti-stress and anti-inflammatory: exercise, sex, consuming anti-oxidants like red wine and dark chocolate. Seeing a friend face-to-face is anti-stress; getting out and looking at trees and nature for a few minutes a day breaks that stress cycle; deep breathing techniques. It’s different for everyone. For some people it’s yoga, for others it’s music, reading, travel, relationships, going out with your kids.

You’ve said before that it’s important to have an every-day skincare ritual. What, in general, do you recommend?

In the morning, use a gentle, mild cleanser. Follow with moisturizer and sunscreen, I recommend La Solution 10 de Chanel and Chanel UV Essentiel SPF 50. These are great options for people with sensitive skin. Solution 10 is particularly great because you can also use it around the eyes.

In the evening, use an eye makeup remover and then wash your face with a gentle cleanser. I always use a really gentle, mild cleanser. A cleanser should remove the dirt of the day without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Your skin should never be squeaky clean. If it’s squeaky clean, then you’ve removed the good oils too, which isn’t healthy for skin. Follow with your moisturizer, I recommend moisturizing day and night.

We’re not all born with a sixth sense for shadows, creams and application methods, and even the best at-home wand-wielders find themselves at a cosmetics impasse every now and again. And sometimes, well, sometimes we just want a second opinion or a fresh set of eyes. Enter our Beauty Stylists. These skincare and makeup professionals are well-versed and experienced with all the lines we carry, and they have a client-focused, nuanced approach to helping you look and feel your best.

Case in point: Patricia Wolfkill, a 55-year-old former model and longtime fashion industry multitalent. Wolfkill visited Beauty Stylist Kristen Lawson at Nordstrom Bellevue Square and we were there to document what went down.

The goal: “I think as women age, the days of no makeup and/or too much makeup end,” Wolfkill told us. “I think the biggest concern for women of a certain age is to use a light hand, but in such a way as to create some of the facial contours that diminish with age. In addition to the issue of sagging or drooping skin, the texture of the skin changes. It’s key to use makeup products that help restore—or appear to restore—that healthy, hydrated, smooth skin of our youth. That’s the goal. At least that’s my goal.”

Stylist Spotlight: Jane So

Jane So, a Nordstrom Beauty Stylist from Montgomery Mall in Maryland, shares her guide to flawless, radiant skin.

My mom and me

Growing up, I always admired how beautiful my mother was. She is my greatest inspiration: a fashion designer and artist who always rocked her own unique style. I was inspired to embrace my own kind of beauty and not be afraid to stand out. After exploring different positions in retail, I fell in love with being a beauty stylist. My goal is to bring true beauty from within. I want to inspire people to be their own kind of beautiful and feel confident in their own skin, just like my mother taught me.

I love being a beauty stylist because it allows me the freedom to not only express my creativity but to customize beautiful looks for every customer. As a beauty stylist, I can share my knowledge and teach people how to be their very best! I love that I’m able to provide personal product recommendations and create a one-of-a-kind beauty. I am your ‘go-to’ girl, your best friend for beauty and someone you can trust! I will be there whenever you need me and you can count on me to make your day an amazing one! I love what I do because it embraces all that I am and gives me the chance to share my beauty secrets and bring true beauty within everyone. Today, let me share my secret to flawless, radiant skin!

“Be the best version of you!” This was a fun one-on-one beauty master class I had with my customer Michelle, where we focused on achieving radiant skin.

Want to glow and shine bright like a diamond? This season is all about healthy, glowing skin, and I want to share with you some of my favorite products!

First, I cleanse by gently massaging Erno Laszlo ‘Phelityl’ Pre-Cleansing Oil into the skin. Then I dip my Erno Laszlo ‘Sea Mud’ Deep Cleansing Bar into warm water and massage the bar directly onto the face, rinsing with warm water after a few minutes.

Once the skin is cleansed, I protect with Clarins ‘Double Serum®’ Complete Age Control Concentrate before applying any makeup products. This powerful serum is made up of 20 pure plant extracts and potent, high-tech molecules. You will get firmer skin, reduced wrinkles, more even skin tone and less visible pores in just four weeks.

To add radiance, I use Laura Mercier ‘Radiance Bronze’ Primer to give skin a smooth, glowy surface. Wear this fabulous product alone or under your foundation for a sun-kissed glow. Hydrating, water-based gel preps skin with radiance. It’s formulated with a blend of jojoba oils and vitamins A, C and E to keep skin healthy.

Lastly, I touch up the face with CHANEL ‘Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour SPF 15’ powder to add a soft contour around the frame of the face. This is a beautiful product that will enhance, brighten and bronze for a custom glow with a sheer, luminous finish.

Top 5 New Year Beauty Must-Haves

Nordstrom National Beauty and Fragrance Director Cheri Botiz counts down to the perfect look for the New Year with her top 5 essentials.

5 – Make it red hot by putting a pop of color on that pout! Try CHANEL Rouge Allure Velvet in La Fascinante for that kissable red lip that brings you into 2012.

4 Ring it in with a designer fragrance. Of course, you’re never fully dressed without your fragrance. Try Prada Candy, Bottega Veneta, Burberry Body, Balenciaga L’Essence, Jimmy Choo, Gucci Guilty, Flowerbomb, or anything from CHANEL.

3 Get the party started with glittery nails. Nails are a girl’s best accessory for New Year’s Eve. Glam it up with a glitter polish from butter LONDON, Deborah Lippmann, or THE NEW BLACK. Try layering a glitter polish over a solid color in a matching or opposite color.

2 Command attention with showstopping eyes. Use a slightly darker shade of shadow for a dazzling evening look, and pair it with NARS’ Larger Than Life Eyeliner for a long-wearing sparkle.

1 Get into instant party mode with flirty lashes. Finish off your shimmery eyes with a great pair of false eyelashes from M·A·C or Laura Mercier to really make a statement. Top off the false lashes with a defined liner, like Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner, to perfect the look.

Come in to one of our stores, and we’ll show you how to get that red-hot lip, glittery nail, showstopping eye or seductive scents for the New Year. You can find all of these products and more here!

Nailed: Manicures with a Twist

CHANEL and skateboards aren’t often found in the same sentence, at least not until Tom Bachik freewheeled into the picture.

Courtesy of Allure

Now considered the first CHANEL “Celebrity Manicurist,” Bachik’s ambitions spun a total 180 from his original aspirations to become a professional jet-skier.

Bachik first honed his creative impulses while airbrushing skateboards and sports gear in high school for friends. Time went on; he grew older. When the early-‘90s recession hit, his pregnant wife convinced the wayward punk-rocker to swap his sports for a more financially prudent profession—manicuring.

All that time airbrushing paid off. He was a hit, and because he requested so many CHANEL polishes over the years, the brand began taking notice when his mega-watt clients like Victoria Beckham and Hilary Swank started turning up sporting the new hues.

The rest is haute-beauty history. Read Bachik’s tips for a perfect manicure at Allure.
