We’ve already introducedPretty Striking” as one of our favorite looks for spring. It’s all about bright pink or orange lips, endless lashes and faintly flushed cheeks that all make a lasting impression. Get this look for yourself with our how-to video and a few Beauty Stylist tips from Cory Treadwell at our Downtown Seattle store.

Some helpful tips from Cory when customizing this look:

1. Clean and prep the skin.

2. Go backward with your makeup application, and start with the lips instead of ending with them. By applying a ‘striking lip’ first, you can then tailor the rest of your makeup accordingly. How many times have you completed all of your makeup and added a bold lip last, only to realize that your flirty, romantic look turned into a dark and smoldering circus? Bonus with this method: you get the maximum output with the least amount of products.

3. Do not forget about skincare. The better the canvas is prepped, the better the topcoat lasts and looks. Plus, the better your skin looks, the less makeup you actually need!

Stylist Spotlight: Cory Treadwell

Acquaint yourself with Cory Treadwell, a Beauty Stylist at our flagship store in Seattle. Last month, Cory captivated us with his artistry for our Halloween makeover feature, and now he’s sharing a few skincare tricks and tips.

Which skincare product would you say is a winter necessity?
CORY: During the winter months, it is important to hydrate and hydrate some more! I absolutely recommend AMOREPACIFIC ‘Moisture Bound’ Rejuvenating Creme. Not only is it a lightweight crème, but it also has a time release of 24 hours! Meaning that once you put it on, it’s there to stay and you cannot wash off the benefits, which makes this product from AMOREPACIFIC not only effective but also simple.

Go for an original Halloween makeup look with the helping hand and artistry of a Nordstrom Beauty Stylist. Elaine Raymond, our Beauty Marketing Planner, took a trip to our Seattle flagship store and enlisted the assistance of Beauty Stylist Cory Treadwell, who created a spooky-chic look in 7 easy steps.

Inspiration: Katy Perry’s deer/alien look in the music video “E.T.”

STEP 1) Skin Prep

Apply M·A·C ‘Prep + Prime’ Natural Radiance Base to the entire face using a M·A·C Duo Fiber Face Brush #187, which will smooth out the skin’s surface texture so you won’t need as much foundation. Then dab on M·A·C Fix+ to tone down any skin redness.

STEP 2) Even Out Complexion

Using NARS ‘Radiant’ Cream Compact Foundation, dampen the sponge with a spritz of water and apply foundation on your face for sheer coverage. Next, stipple (applying by using small, short touches) the sponge on your cheeks and chin, or in the areas where you want more coverage.

STEP 3) Eyes

Try M·A·C ‘Mineralize’ Concealer in a shade lighter than your skin tone and apply it with a M·A·C 195 Concealer Brush as you would a highlighter, under the eyes and under the arch of the brow. Spritz M·A·C Fix+ throughout the process to keep moisture in.

The eyes are the focal point of this look, so start the base with M·A·C ‘Pro Longwear’ Paint Pot in Vintage Selection on the lids. Next, apply two shades of NARS Single Eyeshadow: Blondie to the eye crease for more definition, and then Bali for shading the inner corner and beneath the brow, which is then connected to the Blondie color on the crease.

You want to bring the shadow color down the sides of the nose and follow your own shape to create an almost ‘alien-like’ contouring effect—so it looks like an otherworldly structure. Be sure the shadow is applied evenly on both eyes; when it doubt, apply one more shadow application.

STEP 3.5) Liner

Create a winged shape using M·A·C Fluidline in Blacktrack and M·A·C 266 Small Angle Brush. Start on the lash line, applying Blacktrack corner to corner of each eye, allowing the application to dry for at least 10 seconds. Then, build out the wing shape from left to right, going as far out as the end of the brow. Extend the line to the end of the eye point, and then go back to connect the lines. (Have Q-tips handy for clean-ups!)

STEP 4) Inner Wing Corner

Using NARS ‘Larger Than Life’ Long Wear Eyeliner in Santa Monica Blvd (white), line the water line (inner lash line) of the eyes. Use a white or nude color on the bottom side of the lash line to make eyes appear wider. Then apply a brownish eye shadow (try M·A·C Deeply Dashing) under the lash line for more definition, smudging the color out with your finger. Take a black eye shadow, like Jet Couture, and apply it halfway to the inner corner of the eye, smudging it out and further extending the wing.

STEP 5) Define Brows

Now, here’s where the fun really comes in: Using M·A·C Eyeshadow in Carbon, create a very unnatural shape and extend the brow line into your wing.

STEP 6) Bronze & Seal

Add some drama to your spooky look with bronzing powder a few shades darker than your skin tone; try M·A·C Bronzing Powder under the cheekbones and take it to the hairline. Give the apples of your cheeks a spot of color using M·A·C Powder Blush in Sweet Cocoa.

To seal in your makeup, use a colorless setting powder for long-lasting wear, like M·A·C ‘Prep + Prime’ Transparent Pressed Finishing Powder.

STEP 7) Lips

Finally, over-define and fill in your lip shape, using a shade like M·A·C Lip Pencil in Chestnut to add the finishing ‘otherworldly dimension’ to the look.

And voilà—you’re Halloween-ready in under one hour!
