I’m thankful for my CLARISONIC® Skincare Brush because I’ve been using it for almost ten years, and am convinced that’s how many years it has taken off my face! It’s probably the reason I’ve been carded twice in the last six months. —Kate Fannin, Beauty Trend Editor
I’m thankful for my Clé de Peau Concealer, because it’s the perfect travel companion for easy touch-ups on the go. With just one product, it’s bon voyage to dark circles, spots and unwanted imperfections! —Debra Redmond, National Beauty Director
I’m thankful for my diptyque ‘Do Son’ Eau de Toilette, because this scent takes me back to my honeymoon in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. It’s such a beautiful white floral fragrance, so clean and fresh. —Natalie Kraft, Beauty Marketing Manager
I’m thankful for my Yves Saint Laurent Baby Doll Mascara, because I’m an incurable night-owl, and this eye-opening, luscious-lash-making miracle is my key to look less Walking Dead at work. —Stefanie Frank, Beauty Features Writer
I’m thankful for my SK-II Facial Treatment Masks, because I love instant gratification, and when I use one of these in the morning, my skin glows all day. —Autumne West, Assistant Skincare Buyer
Our beauty trend editor, Kate Fannin, dishes on all her favorite spring looks and trends from New York Fashion Week last week.
Armed with sunscreen, my trusty iPhone, an old-school notepad and my favorite lip gloss, I survived the backstage madness at NYFW (and even a few shows). I couldn’t be more excited about spring, and it helped that New York’s weather was indeed very spring-like. Our national beauty director Debra Redmond and I saw new products, techniques and tips and, best of all, we have since developed our take on the newest beauty trends to watch for in spring 2014. Here they are!
A White-Hot Season
Jouer for kate spade new york Spring 2014
From matte nails and eyeliner to inner-corner shimmer on the eyes (which I’ve already acronym-ed as “ICS,” I’m so excited about it), get ready for a clean slate. Gone are the days of putting Liquid Paper on your nails; this new white is soft and beautiful and completely wearable, I promise! There’s no question about it: White is making a statement.

–Dior Kohl Eyeliner Pencil in White: This kohl pencil is formulated with a super-smooth texture to dramatize the eye and highlight the color of the iris. Its easy-glide formula allows for maximum comfort and outstanding staying power, while its integrated sharpener makes it a practical beauty essential. Beauty tip: Apply along the inside of the lid for greatest intensity.
ICS for Prabal Gurung Spring 2014
–M·A·C Eyeshadow in Crystal Avalanche: Vibrantly toned. Velvety soft. Shimmeringly metallic. Veluxe eyeshadow, overlaid with high-shine pearl.
butter LONDON nails for Band of Outsiders Spring 2014
–Ciaté ‘LA Confidential’ Paint Pot: A natural, off-white crème to complement any skin tone.
NARS for Carmen Marc Valvo Spring 2014
The spring skin buzzword was “demi-matte” or “neo-matte.” Translation: a beautiful, luminous face that appears creamy and natural. More than one artist described this lit-from within healthy glow as looking as though someone drank 20 glasses of water a day. Skin wasn’t matte, and it wasn’t glossy—just gorgeously radiant!
Shop the look with these products:
–Trish McEvoy Beauty Booster Eye Serum: This product contains hyaluronic acid and antioxidants that help attract and retain moisture and immediately illuminate skin tone and complexion.
–Laura Mercier ‘Spellbound’ Face Illuminator: Apply directly to the top of the cheekbone, sweeping up and around the brow to give just the right amount of radiance. Be careful to not overuse by applying all over; the intent is to offer a radiant highlight, not to add all-over shimmer to the face.
Lancôme for Jason Wu Spring 2014
–YSL Rouge Volupté Sheer Candy Glossy Lip Balm: This is like a sheer veil of color with ultra-light texture, and it keeps lips hydrated for up to eight hours.
butter LONDON for Milly Spring 2014
–butter LONDON Matte Finish Shine Free Topcoat: Matte Finish has become the talk of the season! Create a new look for every lacquer by using this shine-free topcoat. Turns any color matte, flat and utterly beautiful.
Kevyn Aucoin for Clover Canyon Spring 2014
From bright tangerine and bold tomato to sun-ripened peach and soft coral: lips, cheeks and even eyelids sported this juicy hue. Whether it was just a pop of color in one place or swept in a softer way across the face, orange tones give spring beauty a major dose of vitamin C!
Shop the looks with these products:
–stila Convertible Color Lip & Cheek in Gerbera: stila’s ingenious lipstick and blush prove irresistible—this versatile favorite brightens cheeks and lips with creamy, translucent color. Tap the sheer tint onto cheeks for a natural glow and press onto lips for fresh, radiant color. The two-in-one compact holds the key to easy, monochromatic makeup.
M·A·C for Monique Lhuillier Spring 2014
With a slight nod to the ’70s (think earthy suede, not glam-rock disco), spicy colors like cinnamon and nutmeg were a fresh take on brown for eyelids and even lips. But the Midas touch was also evident in gold lids, ranging from glitter (somehow overt yet gorgeous and wearable) to soft metallic dusting.

NARS for Naeem Khan Spring 2014
Shiseido for MARC BY MARC JACOBS Spring 2014
It’s the Pantone color of the season, and it started to emerge in the form of ethereal, watery blue on nails (softened by a thin top coat of shimmer pink = gorgeous!), and bold, statement-making eye shadows. With a range of light to intense, everyone can play in this pool.
National Beauty Director Debra Redmond and Beauty Trend Editor Kate Fannin share their picks for glamour on-the-go during New York Fashion Week.
The object of the game is to look as good at 10pm as you did at 8am; the day is jam-packed with shows as well as meet-and-greets, and you want to ensure that you’re putting your best face forward all day long. Because touch-up opportunities are slim to none, you’ve got to have products that last.
Must-Have Nail Color: Prince’s Plums by butter LONDON. Navy is the new black for fall 2013, and that prominent hue (that I’m obsessing over) needs a perfect partner if you want to exquisitely accessorize it. This nail color is the perfect complement, as it combines cool undertones of navy and plum with rich, sophisticated touches of black. If you want to make a statement this season, this polish is your must have.
Fresh-Looking Skin: Smashbox Liquid Halo HD Foundation was created to conceal and perfect—even in HD. Its build-able coverage leaves you looking natural with a satin matte finish.
Shadow or Liner: NARS Eye Paint in Black Valley is essential. You can define it, smudge it or smoke it out and not have to worry about it staying in place through the day and into the night.
Taxi Cab Touch-Up: Trish McEvoy Instant Eye Lift Concealer is like a 3 o’clock shot of espresso for your eyes! It’s easy to apply while you’re on the move: a quick dot on the inside of the eye next to the nose and then two or three dots on the outer corner of the eye blended up to the temple. Voilá! You’re instantly refreshed and brightened.
I’m most looking forward to the new iterations of spring colors and applications (“brushes vs. fingers” is a backstage mainstay). Whether it’s a new take on a classic idea or something wildly different that we’ve not yet seen, I’m always interested in hearing the stories that inspired the looks. Interpreting the stories and translating the trends for our customers is my favorite part of my job!
Go-to Gloss: Kevyn Aucoin Beauty’s The Lip Gloss in Pasiflora. It has great “slip” without being sticky, looks great alone or over lipstick and has the faintest Creamsicle scent (I have a wicked sweet tooth, and during busy NYFW, sometimes this lipstick is the closest I get to a treat). Best of all, it can be applied without a mirror, thanks to the generous applicator tip.
Long-Lasting Mascara: Bobbi Brown’s new Smokey Eye Mascara is perfect. It gives the right amount of volume and length without ever being sticky or clumpy, and it lasts all day without flaking (very important for contact-wearers like myself). Plus, it really does achieve the smoky eye trend. It’s also super-easy to remove—especially with another NYFW staple, M•A•C Wipes (you see these everywhere backstage, because they remove all your makeup with just one wipe).
Stay Hydrated: Clinique’s All About Eyes cream is one of my NYFW saviors. It’s hard enough to stay alert and hydrated when running from show to show, so this awesome eye cream is the best “drink” for my tired eyes. I use it at night before bed and in the morning under my concealer to help reduce puffiness. If I have a mini-fridge in my room, I pop it in there for a super-refreshing instant eye lift.
On-the-Go Hand Cream: L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream is the best for traveling! The petite tubes fit in any makeup bag and can do double-duty on hands and lips (even hair in a pinch!). Plus, the cream sinks right in, which is essential when you’re attached to your phone 24/7—can’t take notes or photos with slippery hands!
It may be essential to live a drama-free life, but not when it comes to your makeup! This fall, go for an intensely dramatic beauty statement and draw attention to either your lips or your eyes.
The trick to wearing each trend well? Steer clear of pairing them together.
“The graphic eye can be precise or slightly smudged, but it’s always defined and dramatic,” says Debra on creating an edgy winged cat’s-eye. Opt for a nude or soft pink lip color when rocking this graphic statement.
If you’re looking to bring all the attention to your lips, pair sultry wine-hued lip colors with a softly lined lid or a subtle smoky shadow.

Brush Crush. Warning: After one use, you’ll be hooked. These brushes are amazing, and the sleek clutch is perfectly on trend for fall. Even better, this all-in-one set is spot-on for travel and keeps your brushes beautifully organized. Laura Mercier ‘Touch Up’ Brush Set, $65 ($133 value)
Super ’Sonic Shades. The best skincare tool ever now comes in exclusive, gorgeous shades of Persimmon, Orchid and Jade (my favorite). After one use, you’ll see a major difference in your skin. I love the vibrant case it comes in—another great travel piece. CLARISONIC ‘Mia 2 – Jade’ Sonic Skin Cleansing System, $149 ($199 value)
Fragrant Offering. A must for your fragrance wardrobe, this provocative, white floral scent is available exclusively at Nordstrom. The set includes a 3.4oz spray and a bonus 1.3oz fragrance. Jimmy Choo ‘Flash’ Eau de Parfum Set, $98 ($153 value)
Scents of Home. Stock up on these gorgeous two-wick candles, perfect for you or as gifts to have on hand. They smell divine, and the vintage and modern printed tins are eye-catchers in any room. Choose from two different collections. Voluspa ‘Maison Collections’ Anniversary Candle Trio, $29.50 ($48 value)
Since my recent re-lo to Seattle, I’ve discovered there’s no need to get away during the summer. With the sun finally shining on nearby mountains, lakes, beaches, waterfalls and brilliantly blooming backyards, a Northwest staycation hands-down beats the hassles of long-distance travel. And while I love getting back to nature, I do have my limits with going au natural; luckily, I’ve found the perfect, portable beauty companions for each of my favorite staycation destinations.
Boating on Lake Washington. When you’re jumping in and out of the water, you need makeup that’s waterproof and towel-proof, like stila lip crush lip & cheek stain. This amazing product reacts with the pH levels of your skin to create a perfectly natural and unique pop of color that stays put, and the brush on the pen makes application a breeze. My favorite water-sporting color: Pomegranate Crush.
Camping near Mt. Rainier. My husband always challenges me to get everything I need into one backpack, so multipurpose items are a must. The answer to all of my skin needs (healthy, protected, natural-looking) comes neatly packaged in one tube of Supergoop! Daily Correct CC Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 35. This wilderness wonder product covers and smoothes imperfections, provides an anti-aging serum and protects with a higher SPF. The silky formula is a treat when I’m roughing it.
Hiking on the Olympic Peninsula. When you finally reach the summit or waterfall, it’s nice to look (and feel) fresh for a picnic and your Instagram-worthy pictures. To keep sweat at bay, I always carry a few packets of DERMAdoctor MED e TATE Hyperhidrosis Control Wipes. Specially medicated for extra sweating, this handy product can still be used on your face, underarms and even your feet, and helps you stay drier on any trek.
A day at Alki Beach. Sunscreen is a no-brainer, but I also like to keep my hair from looking like it’s been through a hurricane. Salt water is so drying, and the breezes from Puget Sound can whip tresses into a frizzy tangle—unless you come prepared with a leave-in conditioner in your beach bag. My favorite: B. the Product Leave It In Conditioner. This lifesaver doesn’t weigh down even fine, thin hair like mine, and the spray pump helps the product reach your head instead of blowing in the wind. It’s great for kids’ hair too, and makes comb-out time much less painful.
Spa time at home. Why deal with traffic when you can simply lie back in the tub with a good book, a glass of Washington wine and some Aveda Stress-fix Soaking Salts? With lavender and sage essences infusing mineral-rich salt and sugar, this total-body indulgence is my go-to remedy for relaxing and unwinding—especially after days spent hiking, camping, boating and playing on the beach. (Sometimes I need a staycation after my staycation…)
I hope wherever you live, you’ll take some summer staycation days of your own. A little downtime is one of the best beauty treatments out there!
