Estée Lauder

Moms know best, so we asked some of the coolest ones we know to give us the skinny on personal style, what motherhood means to them and, of course, what’s on their wish list as May 10 approaches. See all the featured moms in our series on The Thread.

Aerin-Lauder-Mothers-Day-1 As the founder and creative director of AERIN and the style and image director at Estée Lauder, Aerin Lauder wears a lot of hats. Oh, let’s throw wife and mother of two into the mix. We’re not quite sure how she manages all of that with such stylish aplomb, but she did take a few minutes away from it all to give The Thread a glimpse into her life as a mom who’s long on to-dos and short on time (read: every mom out there)—and what makes it all worthwhile.

Our beauty trend editor Kate Fannin gives us the low down on the best and brightest in anti-aging products.

kates-take-anti-ageing-products

As I celebrate my birthday today, it’s the perfect time to mention some favorite anti-aging products (and some that just make me feel or look younger than my 42 years!).

I started using sunscreen in high school (and am thankful I did; I shockingly still get carded sometimes). Also, I diligently follow my dad’s greatest ‘beauty’ advice, “keep a lip balm in every jacket pocket”–that has saved my lips more times than I can count! Ultimately, you’re truly as young as you feel, but a little ‘preventative maintenance’ and good old-fashioned primping never hurts. Nor does a glass of champagne and gourmet cupcake on your b-day…

Expert opinion alert: Beauty stylist Anthony Tippins from the flagship Nordstrom in Seattle, WA, spoke to us about six mini stocking stuffers that he considers must-haves for these dark days of winter. His comments are below, broken out

We’re not all born with a sixth sense for shadows, creams and application methods, and even the best at-home wand-wielders find themselves at a cosmetics impasse every now and again. And sometimes, well, sometimes we just want a second opinion or a fresh set of eyes. Enter our Beauty Stylists. These skincare and makeup professionals are well-versed and experienced with all the lines we carry, and they have a client-focused, nuanced approach to helping you look and feel your best.

Case in point: Patricia Wolfkill, a 55-year-old former model and longtime fashion industry multitalent. Wolfkill visited Beauty Stylist Kristen Lawson at Nordstrom Bellevue Square and we were there to document what went down.

The goal: “I think as women age, the days of no makeup and/or too much makeup end,” Wolfkill told us. “I think the biggest concern for women of a certain age is to use a light hand, but in such a way as to create some of the facial contours that diminish with age. In addition to the issue of sagging or drooping skin, the texture of the skin changes. It’s key to use makeup products that help restore—or appear to restore—that healthy, hydrated, smooth skin of our youth. That’s the goal. At least that’s my goal.”

Kate Fannin, our beauty trend editor, knows how much we all covet a terrific tan during the summer. Here, she explains how to get that beach babe bronze without the harmful side effects.

Me soaking up the rays during my swim team days.

Remember when you were on the neighborhood swim team and were more concerned about your cheesy one-piece than the long-term effects of the sun? (See my 15-year-old self above for reference.) What I wouldn’t give to have that perfect tan shade again, albeit in a much SAFER way. Good news—you totally can, and with no chlorine or kickboard required. Here are some quick steps and picks for achieving the perfect “swim team” tan without risking serious sun damage:

1. Get Ready: Use a great body exfoliator or soap in the shower to prep the skin (shaving also helps). Some good options include Kate Somerville ‘ExfoliKate® Body’ Intensive Exfoliating Treatment or Fresh Seaberry Exfoliating Soap.

2. Get Set: Use a lotion or cream around areas that are susceptible to absorbing too much product (i.e., the often-dry parts) like heels, ankles, knees and elbows. A few of my faves are Estée Lauder ‘Nutritious’ Energy Lotion, L’Occitane Almond Milk Concentrate and Clinique Deep Comfort Body Moisture.

3. Tan!: With so many new formulas available, there’s definitely one for everybody—and every body! (Or face!) Check out Xen-Tan ‘Absolute Luxe’ Dark Lotion. It’s non-greasy and has no icky self-tanner odor—it even has Scent Secure technology to make sure. Also, St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse is a good bet—you can’t argue with an Allure “Best of Beauty” winner AND 5-star customer ratings!

One last tan tidbit…

If you’re in a hurry or traveling, try one of my “hall of fame” self-tanning favorites: Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pads—travel-friendly towelettes that exfoliate AND give a gorgeous tan all in one! Use at night (after shower and before bed), and by morning, you’re gorgeously tanned and guaranteed to score compliments about your glowing skin! Best of all, they come in both face and body options.

And that’s my (tan) take!

We’re excited about summer fragrances that not only smell great in the heat, but also evoke the perfect sunny retreat. We asked Sarah Zaret and Iris Brostowicz—two of our Beauty Stylists who specialize in fragrance—to spill on the most delectable new and classic scents inspired by summer memories.

Lei It On: Say, “summer vacation” and instantly an island getaway comes to mind. We all agree that nothing smells more like paradise than exotic flowers. Bronze Goddess from Estée Lauder teams classic suntan coconut with Tahitian gardenia. Sarah says it makes her want to turn up Ziggy Marley’s “Beach in Hawaii” for an instant mahalo moment. Eau de Lune by Laura Mercier picks mysterious plumeria to linger above other white florals and musk. The results? The perfect scent for an intimate island evening spent in a moonlit grotto. Iris loves BVLGARI Omnia Coral for a “fresh, fruity scent that somehow doesn’t overpower the senses on a sweltering day.” We bet the delicious combination of sparkling citrus with the allure of hibiscus will keep you cool in the cabana.

Stylist Tip: Summer gives perfume a one-two punch. Scents smell stronger on the skin, but sweat makes staying power take a dive. The solution? For easiest wear, opt for fragrances with excellent sillage but fewer spicy and sweet notes.

Island Longing: The noses at Bond No. 9 blended Shelter Island to recall every detail of a laid-back Long Island summer. Starting with an opulent opening of precious oud, shore-skimming marine notes quickly lure you to grab your weekender and escape the big city. Our experts love that this unisex scent satisfies both women and men looking to break out of their summer fragrance box.

Gold Coast: Feeling even more adventurous? Iris suggests Rive d’Ambre by Tom Ford for its “warm and compelling” notes. “It wraps the wearer in a blend of citrus fruits and amber. Based in essential oils, this perfume elevates daily fragrance,” she says. We couldn’t have made it sound any more daringly delicious.

Scent Staycation: Finally, for those of us who can’t get away, we can always take a journey of the mind with a great summer read. Iris cites The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende as a fave because it “pulls you into its complexities and fully entertains your mind. I would pair it with Oyédo by diptyque. It’s just as complex and fulfilling to the nose as the book is to the reader.”  Yuzu citrus lends its multifaceted Asian charm to this intricate olfactory treat, named after Edo, the former name of Tokyo.

Makeup: Day to night eye makeup looks. Tom Pecheux for Estée Lauder.

This season, to complement the evolution of Derek Lam’s Spring 2014 collection, Tom Pecheux, Estée Lauder Creative Makeup Director, created three looks based on the progression of the show from morning to night. The show opens with a minimal and natural look, followed by an added unique edge, and closes with a sexy spring/summer look.

For the natural look of ‘morning’, the skin is creamy with an antique gold cream shadow on the lids. It captures the light in a lovely, natural and sophisticated way. TIP: Pecheux used 2 drops of Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair and pressed it into the skin for an added glow; Advanced Night Repair isn’t just for night anymore!

The 2nd look had an added unique edge: He created a cube on the outer corner of the eye with a new chubby midnight blue navy eye pencil (spring 2014), adding a slight tilt to lift the eye for a new take on a winged eyeliner look.

The show closes with a sexy spring/summer look (pictured on right in above face chart). Pecheux applied mascara casually, not looking for perfection, and applied the navy pencil on the inner rim of the eyes. Using navy instead of black is friendly while still sexy–a great alternative to black for spring/summer.

Nails: Jin Soon Choi for JINSoon.

To complement the bold and bright color, Jin Soon wanted something feminine and classic. One coat of Nostalgia (a rosy beige) was applied underneath Tulle (a sheer cream) to create the perfect nude. She followed the models’ own shape and length of nails and says there are no rules with nude. This is a classic, prestigious look inspired by high fashion.

Hair: Orlando Pita for T3 and Phyto.

The hair look was described as structured ease, a natural curl contained within the structure of a ponytail. (Some models wore a turban.) The S-curve of the hair was created by an over/under technique using the T3 ‘Body Waver’ Styling Iron. After a soft part was made, the hair was secured into a low ponytail.
