Hint: the sound of rare kelp undergoing metamorphosis is vital to the process.

YOUR BEAUTY PHILOSOPHY
Every unique feature you have is something that nobody else possesses, and those features are what make you beautiful–that freckly skin, big brows or whatever. You can’t not love the beautiful parts about you that make you unique. I tell people they’re beautiful every day, and I mean it. Everybody needs to be told that they’re beautiful, because they are.

Back when it all started in 2010, GLAMGLOW was so exclusive it didn’t have a name and could be found only in mysterious plain containers at sound stages across Hollywood for use solely by makeup artists. With a cult following of celebrities who appreciated its ability to produce camera-ready skin in no time, word of mouth among industry insiders quickly reached the public and grew this “magic mud” into the super-popular line of treatments and cleansers we thankfully all have access to today.

Founders Glenn and Shannon Dellimore gave us some time to talk about their brand’s beginnings, which mud is right for any skin concern and their favorite places in Los Angeles, which they call home.

What’s the story behind GLAMGLOW? How did it all get started?
GLAMGLOW was born when Shannon and I were at a dinner party in the Hollywood Hills. That night, an actor friend confided he could not find a product to make his skin camera-ready in minutes—a product that could instantly refine pores, diminish visible imperfections, reduce fine lines and produce a noticeable glow that lasted for days. This became a topic of conversation and the verdict among fellow actors was unanimous. There was not a convenient, easy-to-use skin care product designed for instant camera-ready skin. With no background in skin care we set out to create a unique treatment for our friends armed with our imagination and a handful of willing celebrity test subjects. Extensive research led us to create a revolutionary formula that exceeded all expectations.

‘Tis the season for mulled wine, cozy slippers, long books and drying out like a prune. Even in our native Northwest with all its recent rain, we can’t get away from the skin irritation, dryness and breakouts that come like clockwork with December. So when we heard Kate Somerville, skincare expert for more than 20 years and industry pioneer, was going to be in Seattle, we couldn’t let her leave without asking a few survival questions and gleaning year-round skin-saving insight.

Winter is here and with it holiday travels. For those of us traveling to (or stuck for good in) harsher climates, how can we defend our skin?
Airplanes are so brutal. They just suck every bit of hydration out of you. Try not to wear makeup if it’s a long flight. I really recommend taking the Dermal Quench on your flight, along with the moisturizer that’s right for your skin. If you have a lot of oils, you’ll want to go oil-free. If you have normal skin, use our Age Arrest. Nordstrom is also launching our KateCeuticals line soon, which is really geared for dry skin and mature skin. The moisturizer is Multi-Active Revive. When you get back from wherever you’re going, steam your face. Take a wet washcloth as hot as you can handle and place it over your skin for about five minutes. Or put it over your face in the bath and really allow your skin to steam.

Chanel-Amy-Wechsler

Chanel’s new oil-free moisturizer for sensitive skin, La Solution 10 de Chanel, has arrived at Nordstrom, and the reviews are rave. We spoke with Dr. Amy Wechsler, who collaborated with the iconic fashion house on their latest offering, about the product and why it’s so revolutionary for sensitive skin—and what we can do at home to make our own skin shine.

You are board certified in both dermatology and psychiatry. How has that shaped your philosophy and practice?
A lot of patients come for help with their appearance and end up talking about life issues. Skin care can be so emotional. So much of how we think affects how we look, and vice versa. I’ve always believed in a very strong mind-body, and, more specifically, mind-skin connection. There are so many interconnections between the brain and the skin in terms of circulation, neurotransmitters and hormones. Anything that affects our mind, in either a positive or negative way, will definitely affect our skin.

You speak to what you call the mind-beauty connection both in your practice and in your book (of the same title). What are a few small things a woman can do with that mind-body connection to enhance her natural beauty?

Sleep! So many of us are burning the candle at both ends, and sleep deprivation has become the new normal. It causes stress, which can damage the skin and worsen skin conditions. While you sleep, your body repairs the damage of the day, and interrupting sleep by staying up too late or waking up in the middle of the night, slows down cell renewal. When your sleep is synchronized with your body’s natural rhythms, you’ll look better and feel younger.

There are lots of things other than sleep that are anti-stress and anti-inflammatory: exercise, sex, consuming anti-oxidants like red wine and dark chocolate. Seeing a friend face-to-face is anti-stress; getting out and looking at trees and nature for a few minutes a day breaks that stress cycle; deep breathing techniques. It’s different for everyone. For some people it’s yoga, for others it’s music, reading, travel, relationships, going out with your kids.

You’ve said before that it’s important to have an every-day skincare ritual. What, in general, do you recommend?

In the morning, use a gentle, mild cleanser. Follow with moisturizer and sunscreen, I recommend La Solution 10 de Chanel and Chanel UV Essentiel SPF 50. These are great options for people with sensitive skin. Solution 10 is particularly great because you can also use it around the eyes.

In the evening, use an eye makeup remover and then wash your face with a gentle cleanser. I always use a really gentle, mild cleanser. A cleanser should remove the dirt of the day without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Your skin should never be squeaky clean. If it’s squeaky clean, then you’ve removed the good oils too, which isn’t healthy for skin. Follow with your moisturizer, I recommend moisturizing day and night.

Athena Calderone, Eye Swoon, photo by Sarah Elliott

Recently, lifestyle designer and creator of the digital inspiration destination EyeSwoon Athena Calderone immersed herself in the two newest scents from Donna Karan: Liquid Cashmere Black and Liquid Cashmere White. Playing off the rich notes of the one and the airier aroma of the other, Calderone developed two distinct sensory experiences. We spoke with her about these two beautifully developed vignettes (An Indulgent Sensory Experience and the Purity of Scent Memory) and how she creates ritual in her stylized life.

We know you’re a visual person, which definitely comes across in the photos you share on EyeSwoon. Each tells a story all its own, and they’re always so gorgeous. How do you plan the photo shoots?

For shoots, I love creating mood boards to gather all of my inspirations. Nothing brings me more joy than creating beauty. Many of my decor ideas or recipes are simple ones that are executed in thoughtful ways.

Speaking of the perfect photos, you so strikingly evoked the feel and fragrance notes from the Donna Karan Liquid Cashmere White and Black eau de parfums visually. When you first smelled them, what were one or two favorite things about each?

Liquid Cashmere White immediately struck a sensory cord within me. I love the freshness of citrus notes—Italian bergamot and lemon. We really do all have such duality within us, and the contrast in each of the fragrances really does speak to me. Liquid Cashmere Black truly evokes that darker, more sensual side. From our personalities to the scent to the visual scape, I swooned exploring both the pure and indulgent part of who I am.

A three-part miniseries in which we ask the founders of beloved home fragrance brands to share their favorite aromas and their secrets to creating a home’s signature scent.

Since launching in 2008, award-winning NEST Fragrances has quickly developed a devoted following of its luxurious, well-curated fragrances thanks in no small part to the discerning taste (and nose) of founder Laura Slatkin.

Of all in the world, what are your top three favorite smells?
My three favorite aromas are always with me when I am entertaining guests at home, which is something I am very passionate about and enjoy very much. The first is the scent of the perfume I am wearing and the cologne my husband, Harry, puts on as we dress for dinner. Then, I start to smell the wonderful aromas coming from the kitchen while dinner is being prepared, and that always makes me smile. And last, but certainly not least, I will light either Grapefruit or Sicilian Tangerine 3-Wick Candles in the entryway of my home to set a festive mood for my guests as they arrive. Fresh citrus and tropical fruit home fragrances are always best to use when entertaining because they are universally appealing—everybody loves a refreshing, citrusy fragrance!

Nordstrom Beauty Blog: Of all in the world, what are your top three favorite smells?
Traci Arntsen: Snapped Tahitian vanilla bean, ocean salt and wet pavement. And burning firewood, if I get four. 🙂

What’s the most unexpected combination of scents you’ve loved?
Arntsen: Champagne and oak wood. It smells like a vineyard to me … more than just a glass of bubbly.

A three-part miniseries in which we ask the founders of beloved home fragrance brands to share their favorite aromas and their secrets to creating a home’s signature scent. First up, the business partners, best friends and fragrance fanatics behind Antica Farmacista: cofounders Shelley Callaghan and Susanne Pruitt.

Nordstrom Beauty Blog: Of all in the world, what are your top three favorite smells?
Susanne Pruitt: One of my all-time favorite scents is freshly cut grass. I grew up playing golf with my dad, and the smell of the crisp, green grass in the morning is reminiscent of those days. I also love the spicy notes of coriander (found in our coriander, lotus & cucumber scent) and the soothing notes of sandalwood.

Shelley Callaghan: The smell of the cigars my father smoked when I was a child is definitely one of my most cherished scents. Even today, I can smell a burning cigar as I’m walking down the street and be instantly transported to those great memories of my dad. Another favorite is fresh Daphne odora, in bloom throughout Seattle in early spring. Intoxicating! (By the way, we are working to re-create this fragrance.) The scent of sautéed chopped garlic would be another; it’s a staple in my kitchen, and a meal just doesn’t seem complete to me without it!
