Kate’s Take

From “Rock & Roll Spanish Women” and “Smoky Chelsea Girls,” to “Utilitarian Punk” and “Twiggy’s Daughter”—these were just a few of the inspirations heard backstage as we endured the freezing temps in NYC for Fall 2015 Fashion Week. Equipped with weatherproof boots (thank yo,u Aquatalia and Valentino!) and Mom’s super-warm hand-knit legwarmers (thank you, MOM!), we braved wind, snow and sauna-like backstage tents to see fall beauty in all its splendor.

The Eyes Have It

Fall has always been the season for the Smoky Eye. And 2015 is no exception, although new, modern approaches make it exciting, sophisticated and definitely dramatic. Regardless of the techniques and colors used, we saw many cool variations including:

Our beauty trend editor Kate Fannin picks some of her favorite new fragrances with clean, modern scents that put a fresh spin on floral.

Like many women my age, my earliest “perfume memories” are heavily scented with Love’s Baby Soft, Jean Naté After Bath Splash and a few Designer Imposters body sprays (you know you had one in your locker). But my first true love was Tea Rose. Although my siblings begged me to stop spraying it everywhere, I’m pretty sure it’s why I still love floral-based scents (that, and memorizing every word to “The Yellow Rose of Texas”).

My go-to scents at home (along with a couple favorite vintage brooches and the must-have Louboutin nail polish!).

Thankfully, my “nose” for fragrance has evolved over the years, and I’m excited that florals continue to find new ways to reinvent themselves. Read on for my newest picks, classic favorites and must-haves for your home.

Our beauty trend editor Kate Fannin shares 8 kinds of products and her tips to get your skin healthy and glowing this winter.

I admit it—sometimes I put my face above an open dishwasher just after it’s finished, close my eyes, enjoy the steam and imagine I’m in a fancy spa in the snowy mountains of Switzerland (this also works while steeping tea*…just be sure your face is clean, at a safe distance and you can assure any doubting onlookers that it’s all for your health).

With the overindulgent holidays behind us, we all feel a little over-glittered and a lot under-hydrated, so January is the perfect time to “plump up” your skin care (pun intended). Along with my “DIY facial,” here are a few other ideas that will help your skin detox, refresh, rehydrate and get prepped for spring beauty trends (kitchen steaming optional).

Me visiting one of the many amazing glaciers in Iceland last year!

1. No need to overthink your cleanser with Dr. Dennis Gross’s new Color Smart Cleanser—it literally changes colors as it’s working! Plus, it’s an anti-ager that’s loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants (in case you haven’t hit reset on your diet just yet).

Kate’s Take: Why I ♥ Trish!

Our beauty trend editor, Kate Fannin, gives us the scoop on the latest from Trish McEvoy.

I’ve been fortunate to meet the legendary Trish McEvoy several times, and I’m always impressed by her grace, humor and true passion for beauty (not to mention her very cool NYC loft offices, which are always wonderfully scented with one of her signature fragrances). She also has some amazing products, so I was very excited to try one of her latest—the two-in-one Beauty Booster Lip and Cheek Color.

hero

As you’ve guessed, you can use it on lips and cheeks, and let me assure you that it really works well on both. The chunky, twist-up pencil has a super-silky texture that adds just the right amount of color (and a hint of shine) on the lips but also blends seamlessly on cheeks (perfect for those of us who can quickly get heavy-handed). These Beauty Boosters are great for travel or to throw in a clutch for holiday parties!

I love this picture of the beautiful Ms. McEvoy and me together, but she is so much more than just a pretty face. Here are eight reasons why Trish is one of the best in the beauty biz:

1. She invented the Makeup Planner, and they’re the must-have for beauty girls on the go.

2. Trish McEvoy brushes are extremely high-quality and luxurious—you feel prettier just using them!

3. She sometimes brings her adorable pups, Oliver and Lucy, to the office—just as irresistible as her Wild Blueberry Candle (which is the best housewarming gift, truly).

4. All her skincare is designed by a dermatologist; try the Beauty Booster Cream SPF 30 (I’ve been through at least three tubes).

5. The Brightening Eyeshadow Primer seriously delivers on brightening while also creating the perfect base for shadow.

6. We adore her signature off-the-shoulder sweaters; no matter the season, Trish epitomizes breezy chic!

7. The Instant Eye Lift is called that for a reason—if you missed some extra ZZZ’s, this is all you need.

8. Ms. McEvoy was born in Ireland, which likely explains her jovial spirit and endless charm, and why her eyes are always smiling (well, Irish genes and her award-winning mascara)!

And that’s my take,
Kate

Our beauty trend editor, Kate Fannin, loves Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics so much. Let her count the ways.

With Halloween right around the corner fun Halloween makeup products are a must, which is why I’m so excited that Nordstrom is now selling OCC (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics). Their Lip Tars are perfect for creating any color imaginable. Here are seven reasons to become obsessed…

1. Lip Tar: crazy name, awesome product. Use alone or MIX them to create your own ‘bespoke’ color—check out the Electric Orchid color I created. Tap into your creative side and let us know what you invent!

2. Color names include Captain Howdy, Pool Boy, Electric Sheep, and Leeloo (any reference to The Fifth Element instantly ups the cool factor).

3. The Lip Tar Primer is one of the best I’ve ever used. It melts into lips and has serious staying power to “grip” the Tars.

4. We spotted Lip Tars in use backstage during NYFW SS15. If they’re good enough for the pros, they’re good enough for me!

5. The Colour Pencils can be used as lip liner or eyeliner; I’m all about using the hot-pink color, Anime, as a night-out eyeliner.

6. There’s even a clear, anti-feathering pencil that keeps the Tars from wandering.

7. Who doesn’t love a brand name that validates beauty junkies everywhere? Obsessed? Check. Compulsive? Unashamedly so. Cosmetics? Obvi.

And that’s my take,
Kate

Kate Fannin, our beauty trend editor, dishes on her favorite new product from Armani—and its surprising versatility.

When we meet with vendors to see all of the great new products for the upcoming season, I keep a running list of must-get-as-soon-as-they-launch items. The waiting is truly the hardest part, since we often see products many months in advance! One of the products on my cannot-come-too-soon list for fall is Giorgio Armani’s new Eye & Brow Maestro. This one’s a game-changer for sure.

Kate Fannin, our beauty trend editor, is constantly asked which beauty products she recommends when preparing for travel. Here, she counts down her top 10 travel essentials for summer adventure.

kate-mt-abraham

Me hiking Mt. Abraham, the 5th-highest summit in Vermont

Last week, a friend told me about her upcoming 6-month South American adventure that she’s embarking on with her husband. (Color me jealous!) They’ve been budgeting for it for several years and have one simple objective: “Explore what’s out there and enjoy the adventure.” (Color me very jealous.)

When she asked for some travel-friendly beauty suggestions, I realized how often I’m asked for recommendations about good/easy/packable products. So here’s my top-ten list of simple items—many are multi-taskers and some even unisex. Let the summer travel adventures begin!

Yves Saint Laurent ‘Touche Éclat’ Radiant Touch

#1. Great as a light concealer or highlighter or for quick touch-ups, and it’s super-portable too—a cult classic for a reason.

Kate Fannin, our beauty trend editor, is gearing up for the summer season with bright, brilliant color.

Nothing says summer like a Popsicle™ (remember when you and your friends would fight over who got the red one?) – which is why we’re so excited about all the Popsicle-bright shades for lips and nails this season. The best part is, anything goes! Pops of pink, magenta, fuchsia and cherry are always fun for lips. OR, try a new trend by layering colors—a bold pink gloss looks amazing over a fun orange lipstick to create your own custom color.

For nails, take a vacation from elaborate nail art and keep it simple but punchy with colors like watermelon, tangerine, lemon and cantaloupe – who knew your granny’s citrus Jell-O mold could inspire such a hot summer trend? If you’re feeling more than one color or can’t decide, try different hues on different fingers, or contrast your fingers with your toes. And don’t forget a great top coat – not only will extend the life of your mani/pedi, but high-shine is a must for a summer “wet look.” Just grab your swimsuit, slather on the sunscreen, and you’re ready to show your bright side (no Jell-O mold required)!

See all of our favorite summer pops of color.

Kate Fannin, our beauty trend editor, is getting excited about the biggest trends for spring. She gives us the lowdown on her favorites, and they all add up to Pretty Striking.

beauty_trend_01

Lips:
Prep your smile, because it’s the season of the “perfect pout!” The must-have lip is all about bold colors—from bright pink to tangerine. Our favorite twist is layering a contrasting gloss color to create your own bespoke look. (Try orange gloss over a fuchsia lipstick.)

Eyes:
Get ready for “holy cow, WOW!” lashes with blacker-than-black mascara to get your serious wink on. This definitely isn’t the season to be shy.

Cheeks:
Maybe best of all? Blush is back. Just add a hint of pink (or coral) to finish the look. It’s the perfect touch of sweet with just enough edge. After all, who doesn’t want to be Pretty and Striking?

And that’s my take,
Kate
