The predominant male attitude on grooming and skincare is that they are optional. At least that’s what we hear from president of Kiehl’s and noted beard-wearer Chris Salgardo.

chrissalgardoBut imagine if Rob Lowe thought that way. There would be no Rob Lowe.

So in the interest of correcting this gross misunderstanding, Salgardo wrote Manmade, a book with grooming and skincare tips men can and should use right now–and which will keep them looking younger, longer. Perhaps you know a man who could use this in his life?

Salgardo told us all about the book on the phone. The conversation is below.

And if you happen to be in/near Seattle on December 11, meet up with Salgardo in our flagship store to talk about his book and knock back a cold one. The event is called, tantalizingly, Beards and Brew.

Kate Fannin, our beauty trend editor, is constantly asked which beauty products she recommends when preparing for travel. Here, she counts down her top 10 travel essentials for summer adventure.

Me hiking Mt. Abraham, the 5th-highest summit in Vermont

Last week, a friend told me about her upcoming 6-month South American adventure that she’s embarking on with her husband. (Color me jealous!) They’ve been budgeting for it for several years and have one simple objective: “Explore what’s out there and enjoy the adventure.” (Color me very jealous.)

When she asked for some travel-friendly beauty suggestions, I realized how often I’m asked for recommendations about good/easy/packable products. So here’s my top-ten list of simple items—many are multi-taskers and some even unisex. Let the summer travel adventures begin!

Yves Saint Laurent ‘Touche Éclat’ Radiant Touch

#1. Great as a light concealer or highlighter or for quick touch-ups, and it’s super-portable too—a cult classic for a reason.

Beauty on the Scene

Sometimes, the most everyday objects can inspire your beauty routine. We asked three Beauty Stylists to take note of the colors and textures they see daily and to then pick a product on their radar that celebrates the beauty around them.

HERO

Freshly Polished: Lancôme ‘Vernis in Love – Aquatic Summer’ Fade Resistant Gloss Shine Nail Polish

“I’m so in love with these new bold shades from Lancôme’s summer collection,” says Candace Duong, Beauty Stylist at the Nordstrom South Shore Plaza store in Braintree, Massachusetts. “You have to try Simply Aqua. It’s such a fresh hue, you’ll want to wear it with your favorite floral dress! And the best part about Lancôme’s nail polish is that one brush stroke will cover most of your nail bed, so one coat will do the trick.”

Need to Put Out a Fire? Kiehl’s Since 1851 ‘Skin Rescuer’ Stress-Minimizing Daily Hydrator

“Let’s start first by talking about the texture. This product melts over your skin, leaving a cooling sensation. Great for reducing visible signs of stress, fatigue, dehydration, blotchiness and redness,” says James Webb, Beauty Stylist at the Nordstrom Fashion Valley store in San Diego, California. “I like to use this product in the morning after I wash my face and before I use my serum. It doesn’t leave your skin greasy, and when I use the Skin Rescuer on my clients, their makeup gildes smoothly and keeps everything in place.”

Scents To Make Your House a Home: NEST Fragrances ‘Grapefruit’ Scented Candle and NEST Fragrances Diffuser

“The new NEST candles, fragrance and diffusers are AH-MAZING!! These home scents are moderately priced for such a beautiful product,” says Tannah Ives, Beauty Stylist at the Nordstrom Thousand Oaks store in Thousand Oaks, California. “Not only do all the scents smell wonderful—they are perfect as gifts and great for any home or office!”

Take notice of what’s new and fabulous in the world of beauty.

Summertime Sun & Skincare

Here in Seattle, April showers bring May…showers, followed by a totally unpredictable month we refer to as “June-uary.” But every Seattleite knows that, somehow, consistent summer weather always begins right after Independence Day.

Miles Tucker via Visit Seattle Facebook page.

Today is no exception, with sunny skies predicted as far as our weather apps can see. It’s the season that makes enduring months and months of grey skies worth it to every Jet City dweller. What better time to talk about some of our favorite ways to keep our skin gorgeous and healthy during Seattle’s most beautiful time of year.

Here’s how we soak up the sun while saving our skin from damage with suncare.

1 – Faux Tanning Supplies. Faux tanning technology has come so far, and there’s no reason to risk damaging your skin over time to get a tan (nobody wants to look as leathery as a handbag). Add a little real luxury to that nobody-will-know-it’s-fake tan with 24-karat gold leaf for shimmering skin with this Xen-Tan Set (pictured).

2 – After-Sun Care. SPF protection is meant to shield you while outdoors. After you come inside, rehydrate, cool and guard your skin against signs of premature aging with a product formulated for after-sun care. [Pictured: Clarins After Sun Moisturizer Ultra-Hydrating]

3 – SPF Protection for Face. Sometimes you don’t need full-body protection for daily care or you need something specifically designed for the face that’s light and absorbs quickly. [Pictured: philosophy ‘here comes the sun’ age defense facial sunscreen]

4 – Total-Body SPF Protection. Make sure you pack total-body protection in your day-at-the-beach bag. When you have an all-in-one sunscreen meant for face and body, it’s a no-brainer essential. [Pictured: Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion for Face & Body SPF 60 PA+++]

5 – Tinted SPF Moisturizer. Moisturizer + SPF + tint? It’s a perfect-for-everyday trifecta. [Pictured: La Mer ‘The SPF Fluid Tint’ Broad Spectrum SPF 18]

6 – Sunscreen Wipes. We can’t get enough of sunscreen wipes. They’re totally packable, kid-approved and make applying sun protection so, so easy. [Pictured: Dr. T’s Supergoop! Sunscreen Swipes SPF 30+]

7 – Eye & Lip SPF Protection. Don’t forget these delicate parts of the face! For everyday or added protection, be sure to give your pout and your peepers some extra-special loving. [Pictured: Kiehl’s Lip Balm SPF 15 | Clarins Sunscreen for Eyes Wrinkle Control Cream SPF 30]

Currently reading T Magazine with Tina Turnbow’s scoop on Chloë Sevigny’s guest appearance tonight on NBC’s “Law and Order: SVU”. What caught our attention? Sevigny started dishing on her beauty go-tos! We couldn’t help but share her secrets for creating that signature, naturally flawless look—not to mention her newest favorite mascara.

Image of Sevigny: Tina Turnbow

From T Magazine:
What products do you use on [your hair]?
I use Oribe shampoo and conditioner, in that sleek black packaging. I’ve always been into Kiehl’s Formula 133. Lately I’ve also been liking Kérastase Mousse Volumactive.

When you do your makeup, what are your go-to cosmetics?
I use NARS concealer, because it’s soft and blendable. I prefer to use a color that is warmer in tone, because I don’t like when it looks too light around the eyes. I like YSL Touche Éclat because it brightens in a way that is not obvious or heavy. I also prefer products that are more matte, not shimmery or glittery. My favorite blush is by M•A•C. It’s a deep pink, but I use it so much the name has worn off! I like the NARS bronzing stick, in Cap Vert. M•A•C Mineralize powder is the best. And for my lips, sometimes I go with Lady Danger by M•A•C, an orangey red. First I apply their Prep and Prime Lip, to help the color stay in place and last longer.

Any tips on how to get lashes as long and lush as yours?
I’m definitely a lash girl. I feel they are my best feature. I have tried lots of mascaras. I was drawn to Lancôme Doll Lashes recently. Not only because of the name, but it smells like roses!
