The holidays are suddenly around the corner—and so is the winter weather that can be murder on sensitive skin and lips. M·A·C Director of Makeup Artistry Gregory Arlt breaks down what he loves most about the brand’s new line of Mini Patentpolish Lip Kits.

“The holidays are all about dressing up with little bursts of color, and your makeup shouldn’t be any different. The new M∙A∙C Cosmetics Irresistibly Charming Mini Patentpolish Lip Pencil Kits are the perfect gift for a friend (and yourself!) this season. What I love about these products are not only their handbag-friendly size and color choices, but also their hydrating qualities in the unforgiving winter chill that can leave lips looking dry. There’s a beautiful see-through quality about the lip kits that creates a perfect stain on the lips.

The Mini Patentpolish Lip Kits can be used to create so many different looks! If you want to rock a smoky eye and a softer mouth, try using Lip Pencil in Spice all over your lips with Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Revved Up or Innocent in the center for an extra pop. Or, if you would like to go a little more retro-chic, create a cat eye and a softer red lip using Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Fearless with Crème Anglaise from the Irresistibly Charming Mini Lip Gloss Kit (Pink) over it.

The Lip Kits also work well with many different skin tones. For deeper skin tones, I love a wash of gold shadow over the lids (try Eyeshadow in Amber Lights) and a deep, berry lip using Lip Pencil in Burgundy and Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Sultana over it.

Adding to the versatility of the Mini Patentpolish Lip Kits, try a more natural, everyday look by filling in your lips with Lip Pencil in Whirl and using Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Mojo Maker (only available as part of the new lip kit) on top.

For a day when you’re feeling a little more girly and flirty, try using Lip Pencil in Rosy Rim and topping it with Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Pleasant—super cute!”

M·A·C Senior Artist Keri Blair doles out some guru advice on how to wear the new Viva Glam shades from Miley Cyrus—from bold and sparkly (à la Miley in the ad campaign) to a feathered ombré.

Viva Glam Miley Cyrus gives you the ammo to put your money where your mouth is! Every cent of the selling price goes directly to the M∙A∙C AIDS Fund, which helps people affected by HIV/AIDS across the globe. These new lipstick and lipglass shades are pretty high voltage, but don’t be intimidated—both are the perfect companions to any look this season.

For plenty of lip service, try this look:

Sometimes winter beauty seems to pale in comparison to the rest of the year—but M·A·C Director of Makeup Artistry Gregory Arlt has three spot-on tips for using bronzer to brighten the doldrums.

Pale skin is like a blank canvas: Everything shows up, so less is certainly more. Let’s face it, those with paler skin tend to go out in the sun less frequently (and when they do, they should be using tons of SPF!), so there’s a risk of going from zero to Oompa Loompa by using too much bronzer.

TOOLS: The tools you use are as important as the color being applied. Softer brushes spray the color on in a more realistic way as opposed to a more dense brush, which will put much more on.

CREAMS: Cream products are also a bit easier to use and as an added bonus, are more hydrating in the winter months. I recommend using M∙A∙C’s Cream Color Base in Au Nature. It has a warm, bronzy glow and is easy to apply. Use a 132 Duo Fibre Foundation Brush to lightly apply the color onto the apples of the cheeks. Sweep whatever excess is left on the brush onto temples, nose and chin, where the sun would naturally hit your face. If you use too much, you can blend it in with a sponge or your fingers.

POWDER: Try M∙A∙C’s Bronzing Powder in Refined Golden with a very soft brush, like the 127 Split Fibre Face Brush. Less is more: Start light, and build up if needed. I recommend applying it in circular motions on the apples of the cheeks and sweeping up toward the temples. Apply a small amount to the nose and chin for a sunkissed look, and voila!

Senior M•A•C Cosmetics Artist Melissa Gibson shares her 5 essential steps to a party-perfect lip—a timely refresher on putting your best face forward.

Love a glamorous lip? It’s easy to get a full-on gorgeous red—just in time for the holidays.

Step 1: Always start with clean, hydrated lips. I like to begin with Prep + Prime Lip. This primer will keep a matte lipstick from turning glossy, and leaves the skin feeling cushioned, not greasy.

Step 2: Once you have decided on the right red for you—I’m loving 5-Alarm from MAC’s Red, Red, Red collectionchoose a lip liner that is either the same color as the lipstick or a half-shade deeper. 5-Alarm pairs perfectly with Lip Pencil in Brick or Cherry.

Step 3: Outline the entire lip, fading the line down towards the center.

Step 4: Apply the lipstick in the opposite direction of the liner—from the center, outward. This makes for a seamless finish and for less of a chance of the color wearing off, fading or bleeding.

Step 5: If a sexy, glossy finish is your thing, layer Night Is Young Cremesheen Glass over your lipstick. For a stronger, more opaque look, pat Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder on top.

Glossy or matte, a red lip is a classic option for adding a touch of glamour this holiday season!

How To: Apply False Eyelashes

With holiday parties a-flurry, ’tis the season to sparkle up (see Stylist Picks: Sparkling Accents) and go a little more glam. Why not have fun with false eyelashes? Lash extensions are a commitment, but falsies are for tonight. You can take them off and wear them again if you treat them well, and while the application is a process, even the inexperienced can do it perfectly on the first try with a little guidance.

To that end, major thanks to Tina Salazar, Nordstrom beauty stylist at The Shops at Mission Viejo, CA, for gracing us with her wisdom.
