Oscars

Sure, there’s a lot of buzz about the dresses on the red carpet (rightly so!), but what about all that beautiful makeup? For her gorgeous look, Sienna Miller tapped her longtime friend (and one of the best makeup artists around) Charlotte Tilbury. We asked Tilbury to share what it’s like behind the scenes getting ready for the red carpet at the Academy Awards. Here’s how she created the look (while the two rocked out to some Bob Dylan).

1.    Charlotte started with her Goddess skin clay mask, a product she says “is the key to shrinking pores and tightening the skin, leaving you with a perfectly dewy, plumped and revived red-carpet glow.”

2.    Magic Cream (Charlotte’s secret to red-carpet skin) and Wonderglow were applied to hydrate the skin and create a soft focus, which she says is “amazing for HDTV.”

3.    Next, Charlotte applied Light Wonder foundation in 6 medium and 7 medium, then the retoucher concealer in 2 fair under the eyes and 3 medium for the rest of Sienna’s face.

4.    Air Brush Flawless Finish powder in 1 fair and 2 medium was applied only to the T-zone to control shine while keeping from taking away from the dewiness on the rest of the skin.

5.    To enhance Sienna’s eyebrows, Charlotte used Brow Lift in Grace K and Cara D.

6.    Rock ‘n’ Kohl eye pencil in Bedroom Black and the Feline Flick quick fine line shodo pen were used over the lash line to dramatically define the eyes.

7.    Using her eye smudger brush, the Luxury eyeshadow palette in The Sophisticate and full fat lashes, Charlotte accentuated Sienna’s “winged” eyes, focusing on the crease and lash-line areas.

8.    To enhance the cheekbones, Charlotte applied Filmstar Bronze & Glow with the powder & sculpt brush, following the hollows of the cheeks and along the jawline with the bronzer and applying the highlighter shade to the top of the cheekbones.

9.    To further accentuate Sienna’s features, Beach Stick in Moon Beach and Ibiza were used to illuminate and sculpt.

10.  To prep the lips, Charlotte used Lip Love lip scrub and Lip Magic. Lip Cheat lip liner in Pillowtalk was applied to mimic the pigment of Sienna’s lips and filled in with K.I.S.S.I.N.G lipstick in Bitch Perfect.

11.  Last, for an allover glow, Charlotte applied Supermodel Body all over Sienna’s limbs.

Penélope Cruz stepped out on Oscar night in fine form, looking amazing (especially for being the new mom of a 7-month-old). The Oscar presenter, who donned a pale pink Giambattista Valli draped gown, tapped British makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury for her red carpet preparations, and we’ve got the scoop on the sultry eye statement directly from the woman who created it.

“When I am creating a look for the red carpet, it’s so important to marry the makeup with the dress. Because Penélope’s dress was so bold, I wanted to keep the look neutral and glossy but with that touch of old-school Hollywood glamour,” says Charlotte.

“Penélope’s look was inspired by sultry silver screen siren Sophia Loren. I wanted to really exaggerate her incredible almond-shaped eyes and make them the main focus of her look. I did this by filling in her gorgeously lush brows into an arch shape and gelling them into place. I took a black kohl liner onto the top lash line, right into the root of the lashes and into the inner corner of the eye, for a hypnotizing look. I lined the inner rims of the water line and created a copper smoky eye, with smoky browns all over the lid and metallic coppers into the socket. I curled the lashes, coated on layers of black mascara and added a few individual lashes to the outer corner of the eye to really exaggerate and create intensity for a mesmerizing, red-carpet ready look.”

Get Octavia Spencer’s sleek and chic top knot from the 2013 Oscars with tips from her hair stylist, Jill Crosby and T3.

“Octavia is wearing a Tadashi Shoji dress with beautiful tulle, which (to me) resembled a ballerina. I wanted her look to be youthful and soft to complement the dress. I added the bangs to soften the look, along with a ventilated hairpiece that was color-blended to match her hair.”

“Octavia was freaking out; she loved it!” —Jill Crosby

Jill’s steps to achieve this look:
Smooth: Start by smoothing the hair with the T3 Featherweight Luxe 2i Dryer and AntriGravity Barrel Brush, then set the hair in T3 Voluminous Hot Rollers.

Curl: Once the hair is smoothed, put it up into a high ponytail and curl it with T3 SinglePass Twirl Curling Iron.

Extend: Add a full, pre-curled hair extension piece to the ponytail. To prepare extensions, take large sections of hair and wrap them around the barrel of the curling iron in a corkscrew style to create big, loose waves.

Finish: Once the hairpiece is pinned in, work the ponytail into a wavy chignon—use a 2.5-inch straight pin to pin it back. Don’t be too gentle when making the chignon. Don’t try to make it too perfect, or it’ll go ‘prom-ish.’ Let there be some natural texture to it.
