The Zero + Maria Cornejo SS15 collection was a combination of nostalgia and femininity, inspired by a recent trip to London and Venice which was reminiscent of her time spent there in her youth—Cornejo used lace and light weight fabrics to create a casually understated effect. Dick Page for Shiseido and James Pecis for PHYTO and T3 were tasked with creating a fresh, summery, innocent look.

Kate Fannin, our beauty trend editor, is constantly asked which beauty products she recommends when preparing for travel. Here, she counts down her top 10 travel essentials for summer adventure.

Me hiking Mt. Abraham, the 5th-highest summit in Vermont

Last week, a friend told me about her upcoming 6-month South American adventure that she’s embarking on with her husband. (Color me jealous!) They’ve been budgeting for it for several years and have one simple objective: “Explore what’s out there and enjoy the adventure.” (Color me very jealous.)

When she asked for some travel-friendly beauty suggestions, I realized how often I’m asked for recommendations about good/easy/packable products. So here’s my top-ten list of simple items—many are multi-taskers and some even unisex. Let the summer travel adventures begin!

Yves Saint Laurent ‘Touche Éclat’ Radiant Touch

#1. Great as a light concealer or highlighter or for quick touch-ups, and it’s super-portable too—a cult classic for a reason.

Dick Page of Shiseido and Deborah Lippmann share how they devised the look at the Band of Outsiders fall 2014 runway show.

Big Beauty Ideas: To complement the static presentation style, the look is somewhat “removed, cold and synthetic,” according to Dick Page, Shiseido’s artistic director. Page went on to create a mannequin-like look “with abstract definition.”

Get the look:
1. Eye: Brows brushed in place and lids left bare, covered with sunglasses.
2. Lip: A distinct liner around the lips using the Shiseido Smoothing Eyeliner Pencil in brown, with skin tone-matched foundation colored inside the lines.
3. Face/Cheek: A quick wash of Shiseido Sheer & Perfect Foundation SPF 18 to remove any redness.

Nail the Inspiration: “The idea for this nail came from a multitude of places–the graphic pops of white in the clothing, the ode to polish on the gloves within the collection, and the nude makeup look with a strong lip liner,” says Deborah Lippmann, lead manicurist. “It was from this that I was able to transform the classic French manicure into something that was new and fresh—the ‘Band O’ French’.”

Get the look:
1. Nails were prepped with Deborah Lippmann Cuticle Remover with Lanolin and nourished with cuticle oil.
2. One layer of Gel Lab base coat was applied to nails.
3. After 60 seconds of drying time, two coats of Deborah Lippmann nail color in Naked (a clean, bare beige lacquer) was applied to nails (pictured).
4. To create the ‘Band O’ French’ with Amazing Grace, a pure white lacquer (pictured), Deborah held the nail brush parallel to the top tip of the nail, rotating the finger from left to right, so that the the finger moved – not the brush.
(**Additional tip: For a more precise application, try cutting bristles on either side of the nail polish brush.)
5. The previous step was repeated on the back of the nail near the cuticle, and lined in the same way as the tip.
6. For lining the sides of the nail, the brush application was started at the back, pulling up to the front edge of the nail.
7. Nails were sealed with Gel Lab top coat to prevent chipping and add a high-shine, cushiony finish.

Our beauty trend editor, Kate Fannin, dishes on all her favorite spring looks and trends from New York Fashion Week last week.

Armed with sunscreen, my trusty iPhone, an old-school notepad and my favorite lip gloss, I survived the backstage madness at NYFW (and even a few shows). I couldn’t be more excited about spring, and it helped that New York’s weather was indeed very spring-like. Our national beauty director Debra Redmond and I saw new products, techniques and tips and, best of all, we have since developed our take on the newest beauty trends to watch for in spring 2014. Here they are!

A White-Hot Season

Jouer for kate spade new york Spring 2014

From matte nails and eyeliner to inner-corner shimmer on the eyes (which I’ve already acronym-ed as “ICS,” I’m so excited about it), get ready for a clean slate. Gone are the days of putting Liquid Paper on your nails; this new white is soft and beautiful and completely wearable, I promise! There’s no question about it: White is making a statement.

Shop the look with these products:
Dior Kohl Eyeliner Pencil in White: This kohl pencil is formulated with a super-smooth texture to dramatize the eye and highlight the color of the iris. Its easy-glide formula allows for maximum comfort and outstanding staying power, while its integrated sharpener makes it a practical beauty essential. Beauty tip: Apply along the inside of the lid for greatest intensity.

ICS for Prabal Gurung Spring 2014

M·A·C Eyeshadow in Crystal Avalanche: Vibrantly toned. Velvety soft. Shimmeringly metallic. Veluxe eyeshadow, overlaid with high-shine pearl.

Ciaté ‘LA Confidential’ Paint Pot: A natural, off-white crème to complement any skin tone.

Texture Mix

NARS for Carmen Marc Valvo Spring 2014

The spring skin buzzword was “demi-matte” or “neo-matte.” Translation: a beautiful, luminous face that appears creamy and natural. More than one artist described this lit-from within healthy glow as looking as though someone drank 20 glasses of water a day. Skin wasn’t matte, and it wasn’t glossy—just gorgeously radiant!

Shop the look with these products:
Trish McEvoy Beauty Booster Eye Serum: This product contains hyaluronic acid and antioxidants that help attract and retain moisture and immediately illuminate skin tone and complexion.
Laura Mercier ‘Spellbound’ Face Illuminator: Apply directly to the top of the cheekbone, sweeping up and around the brow to give just the right amount of radiance. Be careful to not overuse by applying all over; the intent is to offer a radiant highlight, not to add all-over shimmer to the face.

Lancôme for Jason Wu Spring 2014

YSL Rouge Volupté Sheer Candy Glossy Lip Balm: This is like a sheer veil of color with ultra-light texture, and it keeps lips hydrated for up to eight hours.

butter LONDON Matte Finish Shine Free Topcoat: Matte Finish has become the talk of the season! Create a new look for every lacquer by using this shine-free topcoat. Turns any color matte, flat and utterly beautiful.

Orange Influence

Kevyn Aucoin for Clover Canyon Spring 2014

From bright tangerine and bold tomato to sun-ripened peach and soft coral: lips, cheeks and even eyelids sported this juicy hue.  Whether it was just a pop of color in one place or swept in a softer way across the face, orange tones give spring beauty a major dose of vitamin C!

Shop the looks with these products:
stila Convertible Color Lip & Cheek in Gerbera: stila’s ingenious lipstick and blush prove irresistible—this versatile favorite brightens cheeks and lips with creamy, translucent color. Tap the sheer tint onto cheeks for a natural glow and press onto lips for fresh, radiant color. The two-in-one compact holds the key to easy, monochromatic makeup.

Golden Spice

M·A·C for Monique Lhuillier Spring 2014

With a slight nod to the ’70s (think earthy suede, not glam-rock disco), spicy colors like cinnamon and nutmeg were a fresh take on brown for eyelids and even lips. But the Midas touch was also evident in gold lids, ranging from glitter (somehow overt yet gorgeous and wearable) to soft metallic dusting.

Blue Streak

Shiseido for MARC BY MARC JACOBS Spring 2014

It’s the Pantone color of the season, and it started to emerge in the form of ethereal, watery blue on nails (softened by a thin top coat of shimmer pink = gorgeous!), and bold, statement-making eye shadows. With a range of light to intense, everyone can play in this pool.

Inspiration: For MARC BY MARC JACOBS spring/summer 2014, Shiseido Artistic Director Dick Page offset bold blocks of color with very clean, almost “transparent” skin. Combining a soft and cool blue shade with a very vivid bright blue from the just-released Limited-Edition Eye Color Bar, the finished look is “natural with a crescent of blue.”

Get the look with these Shiseido products:

Eyes: Page did the eyes first, applying pale blue Shimmering Cream Eye Color in ‘Ice’ from lid to crease and blending up toward the brow. Then, the electric blue Curacao shade from the Eye Color Bar was added in a “kind of crescent, half-moon,” following the natural shape of the eye to create more weight.

Tip: When you’re working with a cream shadow, use a fluffy brush and build on the color to prevent creasing.

Face: Using a light wash of the ‘Sheer & Perfect’ Foundation SPF 18 helped skin look as bare as possible. A dusting of powder kept skin natural, matte and “very real.”

Lips: Lips were neutral and smooth thanks to ‘Benefiance’ Full Correction Lip Treatment.

Each model wore an oversized wide-brimmed knit hat in Band of Outsiders‘ fall/winter 2013 show—it was up to Shiseido artistic director Dick Page to accentuate the shadows cast on their faces by the hats. He created raccoon eyes using Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Shadow in Sable and finished of each look with Shiseido Perfect Rouge in Showgirl—the sole pop of color.

“While Page’s eccentric shadowing of the eyes made them less of a focus, what remains a staple for fall is a vibrant red lip.” –Debra Redmond, Nordstrom National Beauty Director
