But as much as I’d love to make it to every concert that comes to town, it’s impossible. So I love exploring music online. My two favorite sources for great music are La Blogothèque and 8tracks (I will be eternally grateful to my friend Sam for introducing me to the former). La Blogothèque’s Take Away Shows are the best; they showcase beautiful, impromptu concerts in the streets of Paris, an abandoned building or a person’s backyard, for instance. The site is in French, but with a couple of adventurous clicks, you are sure to stumble upon something amazing:
While La Blogothèque is a great place for acoustic live shows, 8tracks is perfect for creating summer playlists or browsing other people’s collections. My favorite playlist right now is Once, now, but I am also a huge fan of the Common Room playlists, which might appeal to the Harry Potter fans out there (I especially like the Ravenclaw selections). Summer is the perfect time to do some audio exploring, so with that, I’ll leave you with my Summer Top 10:
This week’s free song comes from a bubblegum-sweet pop band called Kisses. They’re based in Los Angeles and they’re the darlings of superhip radio station KCRW. (BTW, If you’re in SoCal, they’re playing tonight at the Troubadour in West Hollywood.)
Happy Monday, everyone! We’re giving away a free song every Monday for the entire month of June to celebrate the beginning of summer. Why? Because we can.
If you’re a Cali girl (shout-out to Aya) or you dream of being one some day, today’s featured band is for you. Their jangly, feel-good surf pop is perfect for cruising with the top down or kicking back at the beach. Frontwoman Bethany Cosentino started writing songs when she was 15, and her partner in crime, Bobb Bruno, backs her up on bass, keyboards and backing vocals. As Cosentino told the Guardian UK, “When I was in New York I would walk to the train in the morning through the snow listening to Brian Wilson sing about California, and it made me happy. So I decided that I wanted to make music that reflected that happiness. I wanted to tell the world how obsessed I am with California.”
In fact, this band is so in love with California that they call themselves Best Coast, and their logo is a picture of a bear hugging the state map.
But don’t take our word for it. Watch the video and see for yourself.
Right-click to download “The Only Place” for your very own. And don’t forget to check back next Monday for the next free song download.
Well, that’s embarrassing! Sorry about the technical difficulties, dear readers. Please accept our apologies for the site being down all weekend. We’d like to make it up to you with a free song from Ra Ra Riot (you might have heard it on “The Vampire Diaries”).
Most of these songs have been featured in commercials and movies, so naturally they carry a different energy. I think that’s why I like them: I feel like they’re the kind of songs you hear when you’re shopping. They also feel like festivals and spring break to me – perfect timing, right?
I think the best way to wake up is to music. If chosen thoughtfully, the music you listen to while getting ready can set the tone for your day and inspire you. I even throw in a couple to make me laugh and get into a really good mood! Most of the songs on my morning playlist are fast-paced because I change outfits a bunch of times, trying different things, but I also need to hurry so I can get to school!
