Red-Carpet Looks for Prom

When we asked the Special Occasion buying team to pick their favorite red-carpet looks for prom 2013, they were thrilled. They picked the hottest trends from the Oscars, the Golden Globe Awards and the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards, then picked paparazzi-ready prom dresses for your big night.

Everyone loves Beyoncé. Beyoncé loves fashion. Nothing brings together Beyoncé and fashion like her music video for “Countdown”:

Fashion-packed, am I right? Here are some “Countdown”inspired looks:

The most striking part of the video is its use of colors. I especially love the blues, yellows and pinks.

(From left to right: Rubbish Oversized Tee, Lush Contrast Trim Sleeveless Chiffon Shirt and Elodie Lace Collar Chiffon Shirt.)

Beyoncé sports a cute wrap headband in the video, and you might also catch a glimpse of orange nails and winged eyes—which are super easy to do with NYX Curve Eyeliner.

I don’t know how many of you are already thinking about prom 2013, but if you are, why not look to the movies for inspiration? Sure, you might not be taking Heath Ledger or Viktor Krum to your dance, but you can definitely still look like a star. I’ve compiled some of my favorite (and the more memorable) cinematic prom dresses for your reference.

1. Kristen Stewart in Twilight (2008). I am not a Twi-hard, but I feel slightly obligated to include Bella Swan’s prom dress in this list. The dress itself is quite pretty, but the styling is what makes it unique: Kristen wore her dark blue ruffled dress with Converse Chuck Taylors and a conservative (bordering on grandmotherly) sweater. I wouldn’t recommend the sweater, but I can totally go for the unusual shoes. Pictured here: a Dalia MacPhee Gown.

2. Drew Barrymore in Never Been Kissed (1999). She goes to her dance as Rosalind from Shakespeare’s As You Like It in an ornate and elaborate costume. The Topshop Crochet Trim Silk Gown would be perfect for anyone trying to emulate the fantasy vibe of Drew’s dress.

3. Sissy Spacek in Carrie (1976). Hopefully, your prom won’t end as Carrie’s does, but pig blood aside, her dress is quite pretty. A simple pink sheath dress is as stylish today as it was in the ’70s. I think the Hailey by Adrianna Papell High/Low Chiffon Dress would make your night equally memorable (but for the right reasons!).

4. Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You (1999). For those of you wanting simplicity and timelessness, I’d recommend looking to Kat Stratford for inspiration. Her empire-waisted gown is elegant and sophisticated. Check out the Calvin Klein Embellished Charmeuse Gown (Patrick Verona not included).

5. Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino in Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion (1997). Don’t worry, I’ve included something for the edgier girls out there, too! The dynamic duo in this classic chick flick turn up to their prom bedecked in leather and lace and ready to dance to Madonna. The Jessica McClintock Illusion Yoke Ruched Jersey Minidress totally captures the rocker vibe.

6. Emma Watson in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). Yes, I am a Harry Potter fanatic, and I adore Emma Watson. So naturally, I’ve included her stunning ruffled dress from the Yule Ball. You can actually buy duplicates of her dress, but I really like the Sean Collection Beaded Waist Strapless Ball Gown because of its similar ombré effect. Now all I need to find is a hunky Quidditch player/Tri-Wizard champion as my date…

7. Molly Ringwald in Pretty in Pink (1986). In the classic teen movie, Molly Ringwald shows up to prom in her homemade pink dress to reconcile her friendship with Duckie and eventually get Blaine. The homemade approach might work for some, but the cut-out shoulders, high neck and polka dots aren’t my favorites. However, the Faviana Embellished Cross Back Chiffon Gown will ensure that you are just as pretty in pink.

So, how does my list stack up? Do you have a favorite cinematic prom dress?

P.S.: Stay tuned for our upcoming post showcasing the best red-carpet trends from the Screen Actors’ Guild awards, the Golden Globes and the Oscars.

Read Between the Lines

I am infatuated with the editorial spread on AnnaSophia Robb in the February issue of Teen Vogue. I love how they used mod patterns to evoke Twiggy and Edie Sedgwick. More importantly, though, I am captivated by the dramatic eyeliner patterns! They are so cool. I would never have thought to use my whole eyelid as a canvas.

Obviously this is not a look for every day, but it could be so much fun for a party. Imagine: a leather miniskirt, geometric black-and-white shirt, metallic flats and striped lids! What a statement, and one I will definitely try out. What about you guys: Are striped lids a do or a don’t?

Celebrity Style: Emma Watson

In between landing lead roles in movies and being the face of Burberry London and Lancôme, Emma Watson always remains fashionable. I admire her style so much. Although, she’s so gorgeous that she could pretty much make a potato sack look good. No matter what she wears, she is always flawless. (Is it obvious I have a bit of a girl crush? Haha.)

Emma - black coat

Emma Watson’s style is a combination of edgy, girly and sophisticated. I don’t know how she combines so many different things!

I love this patterned dress she wore at the premiere of her movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Emma - printed dress

She looks so chic in her black ensemble with a white vests that just “POPS!”

This is an outfit she wore awhile ago, but I’m still in love with this dress! I love the geometric lines!

Stay stylish,

Black is the New Black

Over the years, I’ve heard so many people say “pink is the new black” or “[insert color name here] is the new black.” And every time I hear it, I have to disagree 100%. The only color that can ever replace black is black. It’s as simple as that. Because after all, black is never out of style, it’s never out of season, and it is never wrong.

I used to be under the impression that wearing all black was just for funerals, but things change.

I love that Nicole Richie adds a fun pop of red on her lips and some cool sunnies!

Lauren Conrad looks chic and sophistocated in her efforless ensemble.

If you’re getting a little bored, you can always add accessories such as a studded belt like Victoria Bekham.

You could also throw an a beanie for a more relaxed vibe.

Are you bold enough to wear all black?

Stay wonderful,

Style Profile: Jess Day

I don’t know if many of you are New Girl fans, but I have been obsessed with the comedy since it first aired. Basic plot line: quirky girl, Jess Day (played by Zooey Deschanel), moves into a loft with three guys and, of course, hilarity ensues. In addition to her eccentricity, I love Jess’ personal style–a sort of fifties-inspired schoolgirl look.  She wears a lot of cute day dresses with blazers and cardigans, and she loves prints, including horizontal stripes (like this peplum skirt) and polka dots.

For a similar style to this cute green dress, try out this Lush stud-neck dress from BP.

I love the white coat on the right, and found a polka dot tulle coat from BP. that’s just as adorable. Another Jess Day staple is colorful ballet flats. I love how feminine her look is! While I don’t wear dresses and skirts everyday, I do try to look as polished and cute as Jess.

I encourage you all to try out an outfit that channels your inner Jess Day, whatever that looks like to you!

Hat Couture

We’ve all seen the celebrities sporting fedoras, floppy hats, and even fascinators lately. I have never been a huge fan of hats, but they have definitely grown on me in the past year, especially after reading an article entitled “Mad Hatter” in the last issue of Teen Vogue by Jane Keltner de Valle.

Here are some ways to pull off a chic hat this winter:

Do keep a lookout for this trend as spring approaches as well. They are perfect to pair with a basic, laid-back outfit on a breezy day. Hats are also spring break must haves, especially when travelling! Wear them to the airport after just waking up to avoid having to deal with messy hair or while out in the sun…

Hats are a great and easy trend to try if you live in the city or somewhere warm. If you don’t, however, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and give them a chance! They instantly add intrigue and a touch of boyish charm to any outfit.  Like jeans and blazers though, I think we rock this trend better than the boys, shhh..

Enjoy the long weekend!
