Trend Spotting

The Top 3 Trends of 2014

Helloooooo, 2015! This is going to take some getting used to. Am I the only one who occasionally (actually quite frequently) still writes 2013 on school papers? Anyway, 2014 is officially over, but before we become completely absorbed in the new year, I’d like to reflect on a few of my favorite trends from 2014.

1. Faux Fur
This might be one of the biggest trends for 2014. I remember being ecstatic this past fall when BP. came out with tons and tons of faux-fur scarves. All the furry jackets, vests and gilets made me quite happy, too. Caroline jumped right on this trend and styled fur flawlessly in her Fabulous in Faux Fur post.

2. Bohemian Girl – Sun & Shadow
I was stoked to learn about the new line, Sun & Shadow. The free-spirited boho look was huge this year and I have no doubt it will stick around for spring 2015.

3. Athleisure
At first I was skeptical about athletic wear for an everyday look, but Bella’s Sporty in September posts totally changed my mind. By the end of the year, I found myself mixing athletic pieces into my outfits on the regular

Now let’s see what 2015 has to bring. Happy new year!

Trend Spotting: Oversized Jackets

Lately I have noticed that the oversized, boxy cut is taking over all aspects of clothing. Lightweight boyfriend jackets have become a major fashion statement, and I found two from ASTR that I particularly love.

1. This jacket is just above knee-length, and has an oversized blazer cut.

2.   This coat feels more like a extra-long cardigan, since it doesn’t have any lapels.

Trend Spotting: Capes

I remember the days back in middle school when I’d watch “Gossip Girl” and admire how classy Blair Waldorf was. One year I bought a poncho because it reminded me of her. Little did I know that a cape was what she wore. Now they are back and all over the streets!

I have always wished I had a cape to wear to the Heathman for high tea. Now I can at least have the cape, even if I can’t make it to the Heathman.

Throw on a cape to add an instant lift to dressed-down staples like a denim skirt and winter tights.

The Alexa Chung Movement

Alert! Alert! it’s sweeping the nation and highly contagious!

Okay, not actually. But beachy bobs and simplistic makeup have become quite the trend and I like to credit this to the oh-so-glamourous Alexa Chung. Her favorite fall look is an oversized turtleneck sweater with slim fitting pants—usually monochrome.

One of the girls at my latest Fashion Board meeting looked just like a protégé of AC, so naturally I had to snap a pic for you:

She is not only rocking the long bob, but also a sweater and pants following the monochrome trend.

Trend Spotting: The Turtleneck

Every year there seems to be an argument over one clothing item: turtlenecks. Some love them and some hate them. Those who love them probably already know that the high neck is huge this season. It’s making appearances as a looser cowl in knit fabrics and the classic thermal. For those who are still unsure about the turtleneck, here’s a little lookbook to hopefully inspire a little love.:)

Mod
For a simple modern look, pair a classic turtleneck with a leather mini and black flats. The ribbed fabric also adds some subtle texture. Also, I’m utterly obsessed with polka dot tights.

Boho
This second look is much looser than the first look. If you have a more bohemian style, wear your favorite harem pants and a loose, chunky turtleneck. Printed or even plain black harem pants would work here.

Cozy
This last look is probably what I’ll wear on Christmas day if I don’t end up slipping into an ugly Christmas sweater. I love this oversized turtleneck because it feels like a cozy blanket. I also added an intricate necklace; don’t be afraid to add necklaces or accessories with your turtleneck!

Introducing Sun & Shadow

As an avid lover of the boho chic style, I couldn’t be more excited about the new Sun & Shadow line coming to BP.! This brand is perfect for all you free-spirited girls looking for feminine and bohemian pieces.

Some of my favorite pieces from the Sun & Shadow line are the sweaters! Chunky and oversized knits with folky patterns and textures are endless. Some of these sweaters are statement pieces alone, but they’re also delightfully warm and cozy. Take a look at some of my favorite sweaters from Sun & Shadow.

Ombré, please! I love, love, love this white to black ombré sweater. If you’re quite short like me, wear this as a sweater dress. A delicate slip or shorts would suffice, too. Tall moccasins are the finishing touch in this boho look.

This sweater has a relaxed, off-the-shoulder cowl neck and tiny, scallop-shaped cutouts. With mauve and white colors, this sweater is the most feminine of the three.

I think I’m in love. I would be lying if I said I didn’t love this fringey Aztec heaven of a sweater. Give this sweater the spotlight (that it truly deserves) by pairing it with a simple day dress, or jeans and a tee.

Fall is here and winter is approaching quickly, so we must prepare to look our best! I’m a huge fan of the “pop of color” trendYou can take an outfit from zero to 100 by adding just TWO matching color accessories: a watch a pair of shoes. Here I started with a black-and-white graphic tee and black joggers, but the look was way too simple for my liking until I added lime-green pops of color.

I put together sets for everyone to choose from to make your colors pop.

For the ladies, I selected these items:

Corals, lime greens and bright colors in general are a huge trend this fall, so don’t be afraid to add a little color. These accessories are designed for exercising, but they also go well with everyday looks.

Now for the gentlemen, I chose these items:

As everyone knows, Roshes are super comfortable, and pairing them with this futuristic blue watch can really take your look to the next level.

These Chucks are pretty loud, so I balanced them with a simple G-Shock watch, which keeps the outfit from feeling overdone.

No matter how you choose to accessorize, remember that adding a little color is always a plus.

Floral is such a fun and feminine print that adds a girly twist to any outfit, I can’t help but be a little (or a lot) obsessed with it. And with the changing of seasons I thought it might be beneficial to show you guys how I style some of my favorite floral pieces for the fall.

This blue floral romper is one of the newest additions to my wardrobe and I’m absolutely in love with it.

  Photo 4

Throwing on a knit cream cardi was a super easy way to make it a bit more appropriate for the chillier days.

Now what girl doesn’t own a floral skirt? Pair it with a cute and cozy sweater for the Fall time and you’ve got the perfect look.

Trend Spotting: Pajama Style

Ever since Marc Jacobs’ models walked down the Louis Vuitton runway in silk nightgowns and robes last fall season, pajama style has branched much farther out than living rooms! This is perfect for me, as I try to live my life under the influence of Myrna Loy* and Eloise, both of whom were avid believers in comfortable pajama style in and out of the house. Seriously, who doesn’t want to just roll out of bed and go straight to work/school without a care? You can do that now! For real!

hero

Sure, this detailed top is excellent for sleeping, but throw on some black skinnies and ankle boots? You’re ready for the street-style photographers.

Nordstrom-bp-pjs-robe

If I’ve learned anything from looking at pictures from this year’s festivals, it’s that people are loving kimonos. So someday soon, swap out your short, fringed kimono for that satin robe you wear around your house (like this one my friend got for me in Hong Kong)! It’s a comfortable statement piece that adds interest to any simple outfit.

nordstrom-bp-pj-kate-moss

These fabulous pajamas are from the Topshop x Kate Moss collection (all of which is now on sale, BTW). You could totally wear that patterned top with a blazer and jeans and no one would suspect your laziness.

This Topshop x Ashish hoodie is inspired by hotel loungewear, but the thick towel-esque jacket is perfect for anything from beach nights to date nights!

Please join me in embracing this PJ trend wholeheartedly. Because it’s about time that sleep and style, the two greatest things, were finally married.

Stay golden,
Lily

*If you’re looking for more PJ inspiration, start searching for photos of Myrna Loy and her Thin Man character Nora Charles, you won’t be disappointed. 🙂
