Spring Style Staples

I’ve been waiting for spring basically all winter, and now it’s only 15 days away! I’m so excited to transition to light sweaters and bare legs, but until the sun starts shining a little brighter, here are a few of my spring 2014 style essentials:

It seems like I am just now getting out of the late winter energy droop that has plagued me and my peers since, well, winter break. Just as winter is slowly disappearing from our lives, sweats and baggy jeans are disappearing from our wardrobes. The exciting thought of spring seems to have everyone putting more effort into their daily looks. Seriously, my hallways have looked like a spring catalog lately.

Check out these hallway looks and get some inspiration for a stylish and comfortable school day:

My friends Joel and Christina know exactly how to put together a school look. I love Christina’s knee socks and striped shirt and Joel’s oxfords. These are perfect when you feel like channeling a classic prep-school scholar.

If you wake up one Tuesday, eat a croissant and look at some pictures of Paris Fashion Week before class, you may feel inspired to try Gaby’s Madeline-esque style. I love the pop of red her sneakers add to her French, black-and-white look.

So you wake up late and have minutes to get ready: no worries! Rachel’s ’90s-inspired look can be put together in a flash. Add colorful socks, an oversized sweater and a messy bun to your statement dress and you’ll be out the door in no time. 🙂

Try out these looks next school week and get excited for spring. I’d love to hear about the trends in your hallways!

Stay golden,
Lily

OOTD: Back to Black

My outfits lately have been reflecting the weather here in Portland: dark and stormy. I think there’s something simple and beautiful about sporting an all black outfit. For this look, I added a small pop of color on my lips and changed up the textures with clear sunglasses.

Get the London Look

Even though London fashion week has wrapped up and eyes are now on Paris, I’m still enamored with a bunch of the street style trends I saw from the UK.

hero

This is one of my favorite street looks from London: the seemingly wet hair, black jeans and hat, and oversized sweater make it an easy, comfortable look that’s still fashion forward. Rolling out of bed never looked so wonderfully trendy!

To replicate this look, try combining these pieces:

Textured Sweater | High Waist Jeans | Bowler Hat

To make your hair appear wet, either actually get your hair wet (a foolproof tip) or use a styling spray. It’s super easy to mimic a fashion week savvy look! Check out The Thread for more street style inspiration from Milan and Paris. 🙂

Stay golden,
Lily

There is less than a month until spring break and I’ve already started putting together the outfits that I want to wear while roaming the beaches of California and soaking up the sun with my best friend. I’ve got piles of shorts, cute cropped tees, chic baseball caps, and beach totes, but one very important thing seems to be missing: sunglasses. I’ve seen so many different pairs of sunnies that would work perfectly with my spring break attire. Here are just a few!

OOTD: Carefree Vibes

hero

As spring break approaches, I can’t help but daydream about all the fun adventures to come: outdoor concerts, bonfires on the beach and midnight swims.

This outfit is inspired by the girl who lives in the moment. She is neither concerned with the past nor the future. She hums Feist songs out of tune and dances like no one is watching. Her carefree attitude is reflected in her style: mismatched layers, slouchy teesclassic cut-offs and worn-in boots. She’s always comfortable and never overdressed, but she still manages to maintain a cool confidence. Even when she isn’t smiling, her eyes sparkle with an inner fire—a passion for life. After the last bell rings, this is the girl I aspire to be.

XOXO,
Alyssa

DIY: Lace Cuffs

Socks are arguably the most fun part of any outfit. Accessorized socks, what I refer to as “lace cuff socks,” are a perfect, cute and surprisingly trendy way to add springtime prace-ability to your everyday look.

While you can buy socks with lace attached, why not make your own detachable lace cuff to use with any pair?! I’ve laid out the easy steps to creating this adorable accessory:

Nordstrom-bp-diy-sock-supplies

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A yard of ruffled lace trim (available at any craft or fabric store)
  • Fray Check
  • Scissors
  • Pearl-Snap Fasteners (sew or non-sew)
  • Socks

You may also need a hammer or spool of thread, depending on the snaps you use.

1. First, stretch the lace around your upper ankle. Mark where the two ends of the lace seem to be snug enough and allow for about a 1-inch overlap. Cut two pieces the same length from the overlap point. Apply the Fray finish to the edges of the lace to keep them from unraveling.

2. You’ll need to attach the snaps, which can be a tad tricky. Depending on which type you got, you will either hammer or sew your snaps in place. Either way, attach the pearl-top snap to the right outer edge of the lace and the pointy bottom snap to the inside left, 1 inch from the edge.

Once the snaps are attached, you’ve got a darling pair of springtime accessories to make any look more personal.

I wear my lace cuffs all the time, especially with my fave Topshop boots. 🙂 Tell me you don’t feel more spring in your step after crafting some lace cuffs of your own.

It’s pretty clear that I love Fashion Week and anything glittery or glitzy. So combining these two things is sure to set my heart a-flutter. I’m currently swooning over the collections that have shown so far at London Fashion Week. Make sure to keep up with The Thread for daily coverage of the shows to come.

OOTD: ’90s Tribe

HERO

GET THE LOOK: Tribal Crop Top | Open Knit Sweater |High Waist Jeans | Fringe Necklace | Bright Lips

Today I felt like a girl straight out of the 90’s—with a little tribal edge. A few years ago, I would never have imagined myself wearing high-rise jeans; I always equated the above-the-belly-button waistline with mom jeans. That being said, I’m a convert. I rock high-waisted jeans all the time now. I think they’re super flattering on skinny minnies and curvy girls alike; they highlight an itty-bitty waist and make legs look miles long. BONUS: You can wear them with all those croptops you bought last summer.

I decided to throw on a big cozy sweater over my printed cropped tank, so I wouldn’t look quite so bare. Then I added a gorgeous tribal necklace that my brother’s fiancée gave me. As far as shoes, you can go a couple of different routes. I chose to wear a pair of heeled booties, but you could also go for a simple pair of white Vans for a more casual feel. Finally, to finish off this retro look, I opted for some bright lips and big messy waves (LOVE).

How will you be wearing the high-waisted trend?  Share your savvy styling skills with me via Instagram—just add #NordstromBP and you might find yourself on the in-store video wall or elsewhere in the BP. universe.

XOXO,
Alyssa

Once again, I have been sucked into the street-style vortex. Ever since New York Fashion Week started, I’ve spent every waking moment refreshing The Thread to see if any new street style shots have been posted. Luckily for me, The Thread is updated multiple times a day with more and more fabulous NYFW photos each time. It was so hard for me to narrow down my favorite pictures, but I picked the best of the best to showcase here on the BP. blog!
