The Power of Dad’s Cologne: We Honor Father’s Day with Our Favorite Scent Memories

Some of our most potent scent memories can be traced back to childhood events. Whether it’s Mom’s homemade cookies, fresh from the oven—the aroma of vanilla and chocolate still wending its way along the neurotransmitters in our brain—or the smell of a mowed lawn after a spring rainstorm, the fragrant recollection of wet cut grass lingering heavy in our nostrils even now. So when we think of Dad, it’s only natural that we instinctively recall his personal scent at the same time we remember curling into his lap to read a book or pressing into the crook of his neck for a much-needed hug. While not every dad wears cologne, it’s an easy marker to identify—and much easier to package and give to the man on Father’s Day than, say, the formative smells of a tobacco pipe or summer sweat.

Since Father’s Day is June 17, the Nordstrom Fashion Office is celebrating the men who helped raise us by sharing some of our favorite dad cologne memories. Ahead, a tabulation of olfactive flashbacks of our fathers and their fragrances.

Celebrity Makeup Artist Patrick Ta Shares His Pro Tips on Summer Skin Care (Hint: It’s All About La Mer)

When you think of the crème de la crème of skin care, La Mer is a logical go-to. Its healing Miracle Broth, crafted from sea kelp and packed with vitamins and minerals, is the stuff of legends, perfectly formulated to repair and rejuvenate sun-damaged skin. So it should come as no surprise that La Mer’s lead makeup artist and global ambassador, Patrick Ta (who happens to work the famous faces of Gigi Hadid, Jessica Alba and the whole Kardashian crew), has a serious sun-care regimen worth exploring.

We interviewed Patrick to get the rundown on his must-have La Mer products for summer and tips on how best to apply them. Turns out, we’ve been applying sunscreen and makeup in the wrong order for years. Consider us corrected.

We’re big fans of up-and-coming photographer Ashley Armitage, who centers real people in her work for fashion magazines like i-D, Dazed and Teen Vogue. Shining her own artistic (and often pink) light on models not normally seen in the mainstream – with various body shapes, skin colors and identities on the LGBTQIA spectrum – she’s already begun to break through just one year out of college.

For Pop-In@Nordstrom: KBEAUTY, our dive into the addicting world of Korean beauty and skincare, Armitage kept her aesthetic intact and further built out her dreamy world. She shot non-professional models in a simulated bathroom rather than at her house. Rare for her: a few professional models, and one of the non-professional models was a man (second time ever). Since it was a big job with a lot of shots, Armitage hired photo assistants (first time ever) and chose digital format over her beloved Kodak Portra film.

We spoke with her on set about what it’s like being new and in charge. We also learned about her surprising history with Nordstrom and mission to fight the beauty standard and “hack into mass media.”

Their company, Herbivore Botanicals, has quickly gone from an Etsy shop to the darling of glossy beauty editors, and for good reason. Their ethically sourced, cruelty-free, all-natural and lovely packaged products appeal to our finer sensibilities—but more importantly, their oils, bath salts, face masks and soaps really work, often quite quickly.

We spoke with the cute couple about their growing business and how they source ingredients, which they were doing in Hawaii when we caught up with them.

Former Pro Cricketer and Triumph & Disaster Founder Dion Nash Makes Poetry and Grooming Manly

Shaving is often singled out as something that fathers teach their sons. It is a rite of passage that signals a boy has lived enough to become a man. There are tools; there are potions; there is a certain way one must proceed. It separates the civilized from the less so. Wounds may happen. Blood may spill. Some faces emerge from shaving victorious and smooth. Other faces surface marred by stubble and nicks. It is a skill that men practice throughout their lives, and it is an activity that for many recalls the advice of their fathers.

Dion Nash, a former New Zealand pro cricketer and the founder of men’s grooming line Triumph & Disaster, is keenly aware of the intersection between fatherly advice and self-care. When Nash was a surly 13-year-old, his thoughtful dad handed him Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If,” which contains the line, “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster/And treat those two impostors just the same”, and concludes “you’ll be a Man, my son!”
