Byrdie Editors’ Hair How-To: A Texture Takeover

At Byrdie, we’re obsessed with all things beauty, inside and out. We’re self-described product junkies, and we’re always testing out the latest stuff to see what actually works. Take note: We have a nose for gimmicks. Keep an eye out for our guest posts, where our editors will share everything from what’s worth buying to celeb looks, step-by-step tutorials, and more.

While sleek hairstyles are super-chic and have their moments, we can’t get enough of textured hair these days. Maybe it has something to do with not wanting to fully let go of summer, but in general, textured styles are more laid-back and look best when every strand isn’t perfectly in place. Striving for imperfection? Now that’s a strategy we can get on board with. Also, these gorgeously—and thoughtfully, we should add—messy styles often embrace our natural texture, which is always a good thing.

We’ve chosen three texture styles and mapped out exactly how to achieve them. We like to call them style all-stars because they’re worthy of adding to your arsenal of signature looks. Plus, they’re easy and fun, and only require three products to nail. From the perfect pony to beachy waves, you’ll have these textured styles mastered in no time. ’Do you.

Celebrity Hair Stylist Jen Atkin on How to Get Shiny, Red-Carpet Tresses

Ever wish you could touch Chrissy Teigen’s pony? Or run your fingers through Gigi Hadid’s tendrils? That type of stalker behavior is totally acceptable if you’re celebrity stylist Jen Atkin. (Otherwise, it’s a huge no-no, like possibly prosecutable.) Atkin is friend and hair adviser to some of the loveliest manes in Hollywood. In addition to Teigen and Hadid, she glosses the locks of the Kardashians and Jenners, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Lopez and Katy Perry.

Atkin is also the founder of the game-changing hair line OUAI (a collection of no-nonsense products for ladies who don’t like fuss but want beautiful hair) and a spokesperson for the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer (a timesaving tool seemingly sent to us from the future).

Jen Atkin

She’ll be taking over our Instagram account on April 22 with hair tips and trendy styles for you to try. In the meantime, we asked her to demystify hair care and tell us how we can get celebrity tresses of our own right now.

Che Bella: Milan Fashion Week Beauty

Some of the most advanced style in Milan this week came via the makeup and hair on the runway. While there were still shows that embraced the no-makeup makeup trend that has been prevalent in recent seasons, this is Italy, and glamour has rarely been barefaced on the Boot.

Florid Dresses and Faces with Moroccanoil and M·A·C at Marchesa | Backstage Beauty

You can always count on Marchesa for a display of unadulterated formal femininity. Like a waft of perfume, Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig’s elegant gowns slink down the runway each season offering a display of extreme glamour. Soon after each collection debuts, the same dresses drape over Hollywood’s leading ladies on red carpets around the world.

For the shows, the beauty must never compete, but cannot be so subtle as to seem casual next to the evening gowns. To create the stunning hair and makeup that complemented Fall 2017’s Chinese-inspired sheaths, Marchesa turned to Moroccanoil and M·A·C.

Trendspotting: Expect London Girls to Wear These 3 Statement Hair Accessories

londonhair4

With New York now in the rearview, our eyes are glued to the streets and the runways across the pond. We don’t know about you, but we always get goosebumps on the first day of London Fashion Week. Maybe it’s because the English roses we see traipsing to and from the shows always give off a cool-girl vibe that’s thoughtful and never overdone; there’s an element of risk-taking to British street style that’s made to look effortless from head to toe.

But before we get too ahead of ourselves (after all, it’s only day one), we’re starting with the statement hair accessories we’re expecting to see on our favorite It girls. From ’90s barrettes to unexpected ways to use a hair tie, we’re showing you how to style the accessory trends that are going to take over London.

Hair Fit for a Goddess at Marchesa Bridal Spring 2017 Presentation | Backstage Beauty

Like Aphrodite rising from Cyprian sea foam or a woodland nymph appearing in the brush, the models in Marchesa’s Spring 2017 bridal collection emerged with natural elements woven into their hair and earrings. Flowers, pearls and clustered crystals framed their faces and crowned their hair. These accessories complemented the airy dresses, themselves decorated in floral appliqués often encrusted with beads and jewels to simulate fresh dew.

Marchesa Bridal Spring 2017, hair by MOROCCANOIL

To achieve the divinely subtle beauty presented with this collection, Marchesa kept the makeup glowing but minimal, with shimmery liner on the inner eye. Cascading hair was given a light wave then braided into wreaths. Inspired by Eos, the Greek goddess of dawn, Kevin Hughes for MOROCCANOIL created an ethereally romantic but modern hairstyle.

Seriously Glam at Cushnie et Ochs with M·A·C, Christian Louboutin Nails & MOROCCANOIL | Backstage Beauty

Sometimes only va-va-voom beauty will do. Cushnie et Ochs’s very sexy Spring 2017 collection featured thigh-high slits, vertiginous necklines and cinched waists in Miami Vice flamingo pinks and stark whites. Only shiny bombshell locks, perfectly manicured long nails and bold lips could possibly further the overt glamour of the looks on the runway.

Cushnie et Ochs couldn’t have found better beauty partners to accomplish their high-wattage glamour than MOROCCANOIL for the models’ glowing manes, Christian Louboutin for the nude French-tipped nails and M·A·C for an inventive, two-toned cherry lip. Because first you get the clothes, then you get the makeup, then you get the power—that seemed to be the label’s playbook for spring.
