How To Do the Erno Laszlo Double-Cleansing Method Plus Tips for Your Skin Type
To replicate our favorite facial at home, we employ the double cleansing method: removing makeup first with an oil, followed by a cleanser to wash the grime away. The age-old practice traces its lineage back to Dr. Erno Laszlo, the Hungarian physician who invented the double cleanse method in 1935. “Dr. Laszlo believed that if you do nothing else, wash your face,” says Kristy Watson, Erno Laszlo Chief Marketing Officer, of the man who basically invented personalized skin care for the likes of Greta Garbo, Jackie O. and Marilyn Monroe. “He believed that skin care should be personalized and that no two skin types are alike, which is why we offer multiple solutions in our collection.”
Today, nearly a century after its inception, the Erno Laszlo company continues to believe that healthy skin begins with a thorough double cleanse. “Our mantra is, we cleanse your skin without stripping it of its vital nutrients and moisture so the skin remains hydrated and refreshed,” says Watson. Below, she takes us step-by-step through finding our perfect routine, plus offers tips targeted to treating acne and other skin conditions.
Why double cleanse?
The first step to beautiful skin is a clean palette. In today’s makeup obsessed world, it is particularly important to make sure you get it all off at the end of your day.
The easiest way to understand the double-cleanse technique is to remember that oil attracts dirt, soap attracts oil. The oil’s job is to break up dirt, makeup and other impurities on the skin. The cleansing bar works as a magnet pulling the oil and impurities out of the skin.
What is the cleansing ritual?
We recommend applying the cleansing oil to your dry face, wetting the bar and creating a lather with the two. Once you have massaged with your fingertips, you can rinse normally at your sink or shower. I personally like to do this in the shower: I apply the cleansing oil to my face, jump in the shower, lather up and rinse. The rules of cleansing don’t have to be so rigid! Your ritual should be fun and something you look forward to.

How do I determine my skin type?
Always ask yourself your primary and secondary skin care concerns. What are you trying to solve? If you could look in the mirror and wave a magic wand, what would you change about your skin? And then once you start treating that primary concern, you can see what else needs some work. This would be your secondary concern.
With all of the skin care brands out there today, you have so many options to play with and get amazing results. Find what works for you and stick to it.
What do you recommend for…
A twenty-something, still concerned about treating acne, but also starting to think about anti-aging? The winner here is the detoxifying double cleanse, which includes the detoxifying cleansing oil and the Sea Mud deep cleansing bar. This double cleanse is a great exfoliant as well as a detoxifier, pulling out the impurities that can cause aging.
Someone with irritated skin that is also dehydrated? The perfect solution here would be the sensitive double cleanse, which includes the sensitive cleansing oil and cleansing bar. Both are filled with great botanical ingredients like rose and chamomile that will soothe and calm with a blend of wonderful nourishing oils to intensely hydrate.
Mature skin? Hydra-therapy double cleanse, which includes the Hydra-Therapy cleansing oil and Phelityl cleansing bar. A lot of fine lines and wrinkles are caused by skin being undernourished. A good dose of hydration and 12 essential oils are the perfect answer to smooth and plump the skin.
A person battling cystic acne? This one can be tricky. I would alternate between the detoxifying double cleanse to battle acne and the sensitive double cleanse to calm the skin. There is a misconception with those who have acne that they shouldn’t use a cleansing oil. This is untrue. Usually the root cause of acne and overactive glands is a lack of moisture, which causes your body to create excess oil to make up for what it thinks it has lost. Our cleansing oils are made with essential oils that mimic those naturally produced by our bodies and trick the skin into thinking it is producing a healthy amount.
The beauty of our double cleanse proposition is that all of our cleansing oils work with any of the cleansing bars. Our skin is constantly changing and you can truly personalize your cleansing ritual each time you cleanse.
Besides a good skin care regimen, what tips do you have for treating acne?
First and foremost, don’t touch your face. If possible, keep your hair pulled back and away from the face. Still, the most important thing you can do to treat your skin is to cleanse twice a day. Find products that are lighter in oils and stay away from some of the heavier moisturizers and creams.
How often should I use a mask?
Use as often as needed. Masks act as a boost and provide the skin with whatever it is craving. Listen to your skin, determine what it needs and treat accordingly. For me, that means multi-masking: Some areas of my face need hydration and other areas need brightening, so I’ll often wear multiple masks at once to quell my concerns. Remember, there is no harm in treating yourself when you need it.

What are the most beloved products of Erno Laszlo loyalists?
Our Sea Mud cleanser is iconic to the brand. Using sea mud and charcoal as a cleansing agent was an innovative concept when the product was released and it remains a bestseller.
Our “pink mask,” or Hydra-Therapy skin vitality treatment, is known around the world—we sell millions internationally. And my personal favorite—Hydra-Therapy Memory sleep mask—is an amazing NASA-inspired, overnight gel mask that leaves your skin plumped, smooth and refreshed when you wake up in the morning.
