Celebrate the Season with Jonathan Adler
Crafty. Colorful. Chic. Jonathan Adler’s whimsical home decor and accessory designs are the type of gifts you’ll want to both give and receive. The Thread asks the famed potter to unwrap his secrets on how he celebrates Christmas in style.
THE THREAD: We’re loving your newly launched accessories category! What inspired the peace-and-love motifs on your knitwear collection? Do these words hold special meanings for you?
JONATHAN ADLER: I think we could all use a little more peace and love. It’s my hippy-dippy pottery roots coming through. My cold-weather accessories are cozy, chic and communicate a great message—what more could you want?
Have Yourself a Merry Little Clutch: Jonathan Adler ‘Vera – Fox’ Clutch
Tell us how you like to celebrate this festive time of year.
JONATHAN: I jet down to Palm Beach, Florida, with the other members of my troupe–my husband, Simon Doonan, and my Norwich Terrier, Liberace. Because I spend the entire year making groovy stuff for people to give at Christmas, I like to keep the holiday itself simple and low-key. I chillax by reading, watching TV and paddle-boarding.
What tips can you share on how to create a swanky environment, especially for the holidays?
JONATHAN: Anything that twinkles and/or glows. Brass, candles, mirrors. Now’s the time to channel your inner magpie.
Home for the Holidays: Jonathan Adler ‘Mr. & Mrs. Muse’ Brass Place Card Holders
What items from your home décor collection are essential for creating a conversational table?
JONATHAN: Bring the bling to the table with brass place-card holders. Instead of writing your guests’ actual names, write the name of their famous glamorous alter egos—Truman Capote, Talitha Getty, Audrey Hepburn and Liberace are a good list to start with.
‘Tis the season to celebrate, so let it glow and sparkle with some swanky Jonathan Adler style.
