Nicky Hilton Gives Us Her 5 Must Haves
What is it like growing up in the fashion industry? Ask Nicky Hilton. A lifetime of Fashion Week front rows, strutting the catwalk and red carpets and eventually designing her own collections made Hilton a connoisseur of clothing. Having never employed a stylist, Hilton climbed her way up the best-dressed lists all on her own, trusting her own sartorial moxie to get her there. Now Hilton passes her secrets along in the form of a new book called 365 Style, which details her special formula for developing a signature style.
Hilton visited our Bellevue Square store on November 14 to give fans the inside scoop on her new book and answer a few of our burning questions. Here she gives us a crash course in personal style, including her five must-have items of the moment.
THE THREAD: How would you describe your own personal style? NICKY HILTON: Eclectic. I like to mix it up. One day I dress uptown preppy in sweater sets and jeans. The next day I’m more edgy downtown with leather pants and moto boots. To me fashion is about expressing every side of yourself and always playing dress up.
What inspired you to write 365 Style? I’ve been given this front-row education in style and I wanted to share it. I grew up modeling as a teenager in New York. Through that I met a lot of models, designers and top stylists. Soon after I started designing handbags, clothing and jewelry collections. I’ve learned so much from this industry. I thought it would be fun to compile all that knowledge and sprinkle in some of my favorite fashion anecdotes, tips, tricks and personal photos.
Is there a person that is a fashion inspiration to you? I admire women who have identified their strong trademark looks. The looks they created that are singular only to them. For example, Anna Wintour has her signature bob and Diane von Furstenberg will forever be known for the wrap dress.
Do you have a favorite new trend for winter? I am all for the cape trend. There’s something whimsical about a flowing, fabulous cape.
What’s your favorite memory of Nordstrom? I’ve always loved Nordstrom’s makeup department. It’s a one-stop shop for me because they carry virtually every brand I covet. I could spend hours in there trying all of the new products on.
