Chromat Causes a Commotion: Body Inclusivity, Diverse Beauty and Fun on the Runway

Interviews Style

Nicki Minaj is playing in the background when Becca McCharen-Tran picks up the phone in her Brooklyn studio. “Can you hear me OK?” she asks. Like the rap queen she’s blasting, the Chromat designer doesn’t usually struggle to get her message across. Both women share outspoken positions on female empowerment as well as a fascination with colorful, form-fitting fashions. For McCharen-Tran, the two combine in her feisty fashion shows, where models storm the runway wearing her body-baring swimwear while showcasing their personalities. Chromat breaks with the usual runway displays, where a homogenous group of models walks carefully comported so as not to distract from the fashion. Instead, McCharen-Tran encourages her diverse group to cavort on the runway, smiling and winking at the audience at will. Her casting reflects this ethos. The calls are open to anyone, really. Any gender, any size, any ethnicity.

“It’s really about what kind of energy you’re bringing to the runway,” McCharen-Tran said. “We’re never filling certain size quotas or anything. It’s really about who shows up to the casting in full power mode and slays the runway.”

Monica & Ryan | Real Weddings post image

Real Weddings Wedding Dresses Weddings

With their friends and family in attendance, Monica and Ryan became husband and wife in a romantic estate wedding in San Diego.

Monica, how did Ryan propose?

I love going to the Del Mar Horse Races and eating, so when he told me there was an event going on at the races where we could try tacos from more than 40 of the best restaurants and food trucks from San Diego, TJ and LA, I was in! After the races and taco eating, he told me he had to meet someone from work, which I totally believed. Apparently, the guy was “running late” so we took a walk on the beach and BOOM! There it was! A blanket set up with roses, candles and champagne. I was shocked and so excited! He got down on one knee and proposed. I don’t think I said anything, but I hugged him and he asked, “Is that a yes?” I responded, “YES!”

After the proposal we were supposed to meet his family for dinner, which had been planned for weeks. Little did I know that when I went to his parents’ to freshen up for the dinner, there was a surprise party with all our family and friends! It was such a great way to propose and throw an engagement party!

Treasure & Bond Stories | Stephen Kenn Builds Furniture & Community

Interviews Men’s Fashion Style

When furniture designer Stephen Kenn and his wife Beks moved into their industrial loft on McGarry Street in downtown Los Angeles, the roll-up garage door—a holdover from the space’s furniture factory days—came with an unexpected perk. When it was up, says Stephen, “it made it really easy for people to walk in off the street and have coffee or hang out.”

And so Backdoor Coffee and Cocktail Club was born. One morning every month, Stephen opens the door and pours coffee for anyone happening by in the mood for a cup and a chat. And one Friday night a month, the door rolls open for artisan cocktails. But it isn’t just the free beverages that draw the crowds; people come for the conversations and connections.

We were drawn in, too. The authenticity and attitude of the space (and its owner) made it the ideal scene for the spring 2018 Treasure & Bond campaign photo shoot. Plus, it came with a dreamy rooftop, gorgeous interiors and great conversation.

ELLE Fashion Editor Sarah Zendejas and Birkenstock Provide Your Guide to Spring Style

Interviews Style

Come spring, your wardrobe is ready for a refresh, even if all you want to do is relax. But don’t get anxious searching for new styles. Seasonal dressing can be simple and easy, like your favorite pair of sandals—which are also getting an update this spring.

The Birkenstock Arizona—yes, that one—has always been a pretty low-key, crazy comfortable shoe. It’s simple and sturdy: that’s the appeal. This spring, however, the 240-year-old brand decided that their classic could use a reboot. Don’t worry—that cushiony cork footbed remains. As do the velvety nubuck leather straps. But you’ll be surprised by these Birks’ flashy new hardware. The Big Buckle allows us to offer a fresh perspective and have fun with a little footwear ‘bling’ without compromising on our original, authentic footbed,” said Jacqueline Van Dine, Birkenstock VP of Merchandising, about the new Arizona Big Buckle. “So you get a little sizzle with all the benefits of underfoot support and comfort.” That bit of flash caught our attention, as well as that of Elle Senior Fashion Editor Sarah Zendejas. “The larger buckle elevates the shoe, with curved edges of silver and gold hardware, and the polished gleam of metal complements the leather perfectly,” Sarah said. As a tribute to their new favorite spring sandals, she and her team at Elle put together five perfectly relaxed ways to wear the sparkly new Arizona.
