Pesko (and His Cat) at Home: Talking GREATS and Wearing Nordstrom

Do you know Josh Peskowitz? He predates “influencer” as a term but that’s been his function for at least the last half of his 22 years in fashion magazines and the upper echelons of retail. At 38, he’s a deep industry insider and public fixture in the landscape along with guys like Nick Wooster, one of the most photographed people every fashion week.

It’s no wonder Peskowitz and Wooster are both brand ambassadors for GREATS shoes. The smart new sneaker company out of Brooklyn seems to be doing everything right.

Peskowitz was born in Brooklyn, just like GREATS, but now lives in California. On the occasion of Nordstrom launching GREATS online, we linked up for this story in Los Angeles in which he did some modeling, self-styled in clothes personally selected at Nordstrom The Grove in L.A., with GREATS shoes.

Between photos at his house, we chatted with Peskowitz about his time at FADER, Cargo, Esquire, the old Style.com (his video series “In the Closet” holds up), and generally his life in style going back to the ’90s. We also met his cat, Turkey, who was really sweet.

Check out his outfits and our conversation below.

ACNE’s New World Vision of Paisley and Kaftans at Paris Fashion Week

The ACNE Studios showroom and its staff are renowned in the industry for the café-like atmosphere and comfortable, chic hospitality. They serve brilliant food to brilliant buyers and there’s so much airy, open space. It’s the perfect place to crunch numbers, but it couldn’t be less convenient in terms of the rest of the city.

Getting up to the 18th arrondissement takes considerable time and effort. When you’re there, however, a whole new side of Paris opens up. The area encompasses the smaller neighborhood of Goutte d’Or, or Little Africa, and on Wednesdays and Sundays the Marché Barbès makes an outdoor emporium of goods from Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan and other places. The whole area, including the sights and sounds of the Rue Marx Dormoy’s grocery stores and restaurants, felt particularly relevant when we visited the showroom on Tuesday because of the inspiration behind creative director Jonny Johansson’s spring collection.

Asking for a Friend: What to Wear to Bike to Work? Part II

Biking to work–a great option for those who are able–sharpens body and mind. You show up to the office feeling like Superman. But what to wear when biking to work? The main idea is to be comfortable on your commute, and then duck into a dark room to switch out your sweaty shirt—and emerge like Clark Kent. Senior Stylist Jodi Taylor helps us consider this transitional gear. (See our first post here.)

  • Bring a backpack with a clean, button-up shirt inside. Whatever you go through on your bike ride—you put on the shirt and it’s like it never happened.
  • Anticipate wrinkles in your pants and choose a pair that look good when they’re less than pristine, like dark jeans or lightweight chinos.
  • Temperature swings require layers such as jackets, vests and hoodies. Give yourself options. The backpack comes in handy here.
  • Comfortable footwear is crucial. When in doubt, grab sneakers. You can also bring a pair of non-bike-friendly shoes in your backpack.
  • Wear a helmet: not up for negotiation!

How to Wear the Best Emerging Designers for Spring with Olivia Kim

Leave it to Olivia Kim to break down the season’s most intimidating looks. No really: let’s just leave it to her. Here’s our SPACE curator demystifying key looks from the best emerging designers—and including links so you can own the vibe now.

How to rock a ruffle like it’s no big deal:

“It’s all in the shoes and socks. A really beautiful pair of stark white socks will do wonders for your life; wear them with some oxfords or a pair of sturdy, chunky sandals. They’ll make your ruffles look way more NBD.”

Lightweight Coats for Spring: Considering the Coach’s Jacket

coach

One of our favorite style writers, Jacob Gallagher over at the Wall Street Journal, recently highlighted the coach’s jacket: a clean lightweight coat which resembles a shirt jacket and can easily be dressed up or down depending on the situation.

Click here to read the piece. Gallagher has a good way of explaining this garment as an American classic and placing it in the context of fashion’s ongoing ’90s revivalism.

We love the coach’s jacket for its looks and its versatility, working year-round as a layering piece but perhaps most perfect in spring, worn by itself.

Most coach’s jackets have a nylon shell. Gallagher’s article contains praise for ACNE‘s version, one of our favorites: it doesn’t wrinkle and stays sharp. The jacket you see above is by Saturdays NYC and made from cotton. Four more options are below for your consideration.

Paris Fashion Week: What Band Inspired this Acne Studios Runway Video and Informed Our Showroom Visit

I noticed after about half an hour inside the Acne Studios showroom with the SPACE buying team that they were playing a decent selection of songs from the ’70s-era legendary American garage band The Cramps. When I had the chance to ask the brand’s team what informed the fall 2016 collection, I was told matter-of-factly that the designers were indeed thinking about the band’s Poison Ivy and Lux Interior, and filtering what they called ‘Acne archetypes’ through the iconic lead couple’s often gilded and outré but always streetwise style.

Paris Fashion Week: Olivia Kim is a Lunch Person

A few weeks before we all packed our bags for New York Fashion Week, Olivia Kim and I met to go over a few things in her office, and as we discussed how our days with SPACE brands and their showrooms and runway shows would go, she stopped and said emphatically, “We will build a break into our schedule every day so we can stop and eat like normal people. I’m a lunch person.

olivia_kim_earrings

Olivia Kim in the Koché showroom; it can’t be all work and no play, but it sometimes seems like it is.

But what’s that saying about the best laid plans? Yeah, Fashion Week basically renders them void. Which is not to say we haven’t stopped a few times over the last month to a quick bite here or there, but it certainly has not happened as often as the average Lunch Person would have liked.

Just this week, however, between our showroom appointment with Vetements and the Acne Studios runway show, we managed to duck into a Chinese/Thai restaurant on the Champs-Élysées called Diep that our pal Julien David had recommended. Should you be in the need of a lunch break in Paris—or should we, for some reason, need proof that we really are humans who pause long enough to eat civilized meals, we documented it with some photos.

Go Behind the Scenes on a SPACE Photo Shoot

It happened in Brooklyn, smack-dab in the middle of the last New York Fashion Week: some of the best spring looks from SPACE designers, selected and styled to throw it all back to the teenage years, when we thought we knew everything—and we probably did.

opener

All behind-the-scenes images by Jessa Carter; this look by Etienne Deroeux

You see, it’s like this: The more designers we talked to over the normal course of interviewing our favorite brands and visiting them at various Fashion Week events, the more we heard about how the post-adolescent, pre-adult era was a time of creative growth and innovation. They told us it was a time that seeded and cemented big and small ideas about what it meant to connect and create, and we wanted to explore that.

The resulting photo editorial—shot by Max Farago, styled by Delphine Danhier, starring on-the-rise Spanish model Steffy Argelich and posted in our SPACE shop today with quotes from the Marques’Almeida creative heads as well as other top designers—is not about looking like a teenager, and it isn’t really about thinking like one either. It’s about remembering the freedom to feel, and respecting the power to believe—in yourself, in your friends, and in the world around you.

Denim is obviously a must-have, especially with raw edges and a high waist. Peju’s pair has a retro edge that adds an interesting contrast to her sleek white jacket.
